Yes—Tesla announced in January 2026 that it would wind down Model S and Model X production, and by April Axios reported the models had been discontinued. Tesla planned to repurpose their Fremont factory space for Optimus humanoid robots. Its stated goal of eventually producing one million robots a year is a target, not current or confirmed output.
When did Tesla stop making the Model S and Model X?
On January 28, 2026, CEO Elon Musk said Tesla expected to wind down production in the following quarter. He described the plan on the company’s Q4 2025 earnings call; TechCrunch’s report quoted him saying Tesla would “basically stop production.”
By April 22, Axios reported the Model S and Model X had been discontinued to make way for Optimus production in Fremont. That later status comes from Axios, rather than a confirmation of completed vehicle wind-down in Tesla’s subsequent SEC filing. Tesla’s Q2 2026 filing discussed preparations and investment for large-scale Optimus production, while noting that manufacturing plans face uncertainty as operations are established and ramped. It does not confirm that the factory conversion was complete or that robots were being produced at the stated eventual capacity.
Why is Tesla ending Model S and Model X production?
Tesla’s stated reason is a strategic shift toward autonomy and humanoid robots. Musk said, as reported by TechCrunch, “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy.” The company planned to convert the Fremont space used for the two vehicle programs into an Optimus factory.

The Model S launched in 2012 and the Model X in 2015, according to TechCrunch. Tesla has not established in the sources cited here that a particular sales decline caused the decision, so the production shift should not be read as proof of a specific financial or demand problem.
What is Tesla building in the Fremont factory instead?
Tesla plans to make Optimus humanoid robots in the former Model S and Model X production space. In its Q4 2025 update deck, Tesla described Optimus Gen 3 as its first design intended for mass production and said production on the first line was planned to begin before the end of 2026. The deck described eventual planned capacity of one million robots per year; Musk also gave one million a year as a long-term goal for the Fremont space. These are forward-looking plans, not a report of achieved production. Tesla’s Q2 2026 SEC filing later referred to preparations and investment for large-scale production and cautioned that establishing and ramping manufacturing involves uncertainty.

What does the decision mean for current Model S and X owners?
TechCrunch reported Musk said Tesla would support existing owners “for as long as people have the vehicles.” That is a broad commitment, not a published service policy. The statement does not specify which services are included, where support will be available, how long parts will remain available, or what limits may apply. Owners should not treat it as a detailed guarantee about repairs, parts, or service arrangements.
