Tesla Moved 11,509 Bitcoin to New Wallets in 2024. Did It Sell?

Tesla’s October 2024 Bitcoin transfers were not proof of a sale or loss. Arkham called them wallet rotations, and Tesla later reported holding 11,509 BTC.

Tesla’s Bitcoin did not “vanish” in the sense of being shown lost or sold. On October 15, 2024, 11,509 BTC moved to new addresses; news coverage estimated their value at roughly $770 million at the time. Arkham Intelligence later said it believed the transfers were wallet rotations and that Tesla still owned the Bitcoin. Tesla’s June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q reports the same 11,509 BTC holding.

What happened to Tesla’s Bitcoin?

On October 15, 2024, 11,509 BTC moved to multiple new Bitcoin addresses, according to Arkham-tracked on-chain data reported by The Block. The report estimated the coins were worth roughly $770 million at the time. That is a historical market valuation attached to the transfer—not evidence that Tesla lost or sold that amount.

Arkham had announced in March 2024 that it believed Tesla held about 11.51K BTC across 68 addresses, based on its on-chain attribution. The firm said the flows it identified matched Tesla’s financial statements; those address labels and holdings were Arkham’s analysis, rather than a Tesla statement about individual wallet control. Did Tesla sell its Bitcoin?

The transfers alone do not establish a sale. On October 22, 2024, The Block reported Arkham’s follow-up assessment: “We believe that the Tesla wallet movements that we reported on last week were wallet rotations with the Bitcoin still owned by Tesla.” That is Arkham’s interpretation of the observed activity, not a direct Tesla statement.

Tesla’s own subsequent filing offers a separate point of evidence: its Form 10-Q reports 11,509 units of Bitcoin as of June 30, 2026. The filing also reports the same quantity as of December 31, 2025. It lists an acquisition cost of $386 million for the June 2026 holding. Tesla’s Form 10-Q

The filing supports Tesla’s reported holdings at those dates, while the transaction reporting describes address-level movements in October 2024. Neither, as reported here, confirms the precise purpose of those transfers.

Why did Tesla move the coins?

Arkham characterized the activity as wallet rotation, a description consistent with moving assets between addresses while continuing to own them. The sources do not establish the exact operational reason, the custodian involved, or who controlled the private keys. Address attribution and transaction flows can support an analytics firm’s assessment, but they do not by themselves identify a custody provider or prove the purpose of a transfer.

Tesla’s investor-relations archive lists its third-quarter 2024 results and 10-Q on October 23, 2024, but that date alone does not verify a company explanation for the specific wallet movements. Tesla investor-relations archive

What did “$750 million” mean?

The headline’s $750 million is a rounded historical figure. The contemporaneous report put the value at roughly $770 million; Bitcoin’s market price changes, so a dollar estimate depends on when it is calculated. Neither number is a reported loss, a confirmed sale price, or a statement of what Tesla’s Bitcoin is worth today.

Figure What it describes
11,509 BTC The quantity reported transferred on October 15, 2024, in The Block’s report based on Arkham-tracked data.
Roughly $770 million The Block’s contemporaneous estimated market value for those transfers in October 2024—not a loss figure.
11,509 BTC; $386 million acquisition cost Tesla’s reported holding and acquisition cost as of June 30, 2026, in its Form 10-Q.

How to read the evidence

  • Company filing: Tesla’s Form 10-Q reports a quantity and acquisition cost at specified reporting dates.
  • Analytics attribution: Arkham labeled addresses and interpreted transaction flows as belonging to Tesla; this is not the same as a Tesla disclosure naming wallet controllers or a custodian.
  • Observable transfer: The reported movement shows coins changing addresses. It does not, by itself, establish that they were sold, stolen, or lost.
  • Dollar estimate: A market valuation at the time of a transfer is not interchangeable with BTC quantity or Tesla’s acquisition cost.
