How to choose an eyebrow hold gel
Start with the finish you want, then choose the formula and brush that can deliver it. Brow gels can shape and set hairs, add tint, or create the appearance of fullness; those functions are not interchangeable.
- For shaping without added color: Choose a clear setting gel.
- For added color or fuller-looking brows: Consider a tinted formula. Some tinted gels also contain fibers.
- For a soft, natural finish: Look for light or medium hold. For a more lifted, fixed look, consider a strong-hold formula.
- For precise styling: Check the brush shape. A small spoolie, comb, or dual-ended applicator can make placement easier.
Hold labels such as “medium” and “extra-strong” are editorial descriptions, not standardized performance measurements. Similarly, wear and resistance claims should be understood as manufacturer claims unless an independent test is identified.

Clear gel or tinted gel?
Choose clear when setting is the priority
A clear gel is the straightforward option if you want to groom and hold brow hairs without depositing color. Benefit distinguishes its 24-HR Brow Setter as a clear setting gel.

Choose tint or fibers when you want added fullness
A tinted formula can add visible color, while fibers can contribute to a fuller-looking effect. Benefit describes Gimme Brow+ as a tinted volumizing gel with bamboo cellulose fibers and ten buildable tints. Maybelline lists a clear option plus four tinted shades for Super Lock Brow Glue. Shade availability can change, so verify the current selection on the brand’s product page.
What hold and wear claims do—and don’t—tell you
Terms such as flexible, strong, and extra-strong can help narrow choices, but they do not represent a shared testing scale. A strong-hold description is not proof that a product will keep every brow in place for a particular number of hours.

For example, Maybelline advertises up to 24-hour wear and water, sweat, transfer, and flake resistance for Super Lock Brow Glue. These are Maybelline’s claims, not independently verified results in the cited material. Benefit describes Gimme Brow+ as water-resistant and long-wearing. If wear time or resistance matters to you, check the product’s current packaging and brand page, and treat promotional language as a claim rather than a guarantee.
Using a brow gel with more control
- Pick the finish first. Use clear gel when you only want to set hairs; choose tint or fibers if you also want color or a fuller-looking effect.
- Apply gradually. Maybelline advises using Super Lock Brow Glue lightly and building up slowly; the brand warns that over-application can risk flaking.
- Use the applicator for the job. A tapered brush or spoolie can help place product through the hairs, while a comb end may help guide them into position. The cited product descriptions identify these brush features, but do not establish one brush as best for every brow.
- Check for residue as you go. ELLE reports that a few reviewers found Brow Freeze Gel flaky over time. That is a reported caveat, not a universal outcome; if a formula leaves visible residue on your brows, use less or try another product.
