Salesforce estimated that shoppers spent $33.6 billion online worldwide on Thanksgiving Day 2024, a 6% increase from the previous year. Mobile devices accounted for 72% of online orders and 80% of online traffic, according to figures attributed to Salesforce in TechCrunch’s November 29 report. These are company-derived estimates, not a government retail-sales measure.
What Salesforce reported for Thanksgiving 2024
Salesforce put global online sales on Thanksgiving Day 2024 at $33.6 billion, up 6% year over year. Its reported U.S. total was $8.1 billion, up 8%; online sales in Europe grew 10%. The figures were reported by TechCrunch as Salesforce data.
Mobile orders and traffic
Salesforce said 72% of online orders on Thanksgiving were made on mobile devices, a rise of 3 percentage points from 2023. Mobile accounted for 80% of online traffic. Orders and traffic describe different activity: a visit to a retail site does not necessarily result in an order.
How the Salesforce figures compare with Adobe’s
Adobe’s separate estimate covered the United States, not the global market. Adobe put U.S. online spending on Thanksgiving 2024 at $6.1 billion, up from $5.6 billion in 2023, and said 59.5% of U.S. online sales were made on mobile. Adobe described its analytics coverage as including more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites.

The mobile percentages are not contradictory: Salesforce measured mobile’s share of orders, while Adobe measured its share of sales. The estimates also differ in geography and data methodology, so they should not be read as competing measurements of the same total. TechCrunch reported that Salesforce’s stated data basis covered 1.5 billion consumers across customer activity and other feeds in Commerce Cloud, Marketing Cloud, and Service Cloud. That describes the company’s data sources; it does not independently establish how representative the estimates are of all shoppers.
Keep Thanksgiving separate from Cyber Week
Salesforce later reported $314.9 billion in global online sales across Cyber Week, November 26 through December 2, 2024, and said mobile accounted for 70% of U.S. and global online orders during that broader period. Those figures cover multiple days and cannot be substituted for Thanksgiving Day’s $33.6 billion and 72% mobile-order share. Salesforce published the Cyber Week figures in its December 4, 2024 release.
