Why is Tesla selling demo vehicles?
Tesla’s official demo-vehicle guidance says these cars have been used for demonstration, including demo drives and showroom staging. It says they have not previously been registered or titled to another individual. The guidance does not attribute demo listings to unusually high demand.
Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 filing reports that automotive sales revenue increased by $6.77 billion, or 24%, in the six months ended June 30, 2026, compared with the same period in 2025. Tesla attributed the increase in part to an approximately 18% rise in cash deliveries and the prior-period factory changeover to the New Model Y. Those company-wide figures do not explain why an individual demo vehicle is listed or establish that high demand is the reason for demo sales. What makes a demo vehicle different from a custom order?
Tesla says demo vehicles typically have faster delivery and a lower purchase price. They are existing vehicles with demonstration or showroom use, so the exact configuration, mileage, condition and delivery location depend on the listing. Tesla does not state a standard discount or mileage amount.

Compare the particular demo listing with the vehicle you would custom-order rather than assuming a fixed saving. Tesla’s new-vehicle ordering guidance describes the order process; the actual cost and timing comparison depends on the options and inventory available to you.

How much mileage and wear should you expect?
There is no general mileage figure in Tesla’s demo-vehicle guidance. Read the individual listing for its mileage and inspect the vehicle’s condition before committing. Tesla says every demo vehicle receives an internal cosmetic and mechanical inspection and may receive light repairs. It also says, “Normal wear and tear indicative of the age and mileage of the vehicle should be expected.”

Tesla lists the following thresholds in its preparation standards. These are Tesla’s stated inspection criteria, not independent inspection results:
- Paint scratches: up to 1 inch in one direction.
- Dents or rock chips: under 1/2 inch in diameter.
- Wheel damage: under 6 inches.
- Tire tread: at least 5/32 inch.
- Brake-pad thickness: at least 6 mm.
Use those criteria as a guide to Tesla’s stated standards, not as a substitute for examining the specific vehicle. If the listing or inspection process does not answer a condition question, ask Tesla for clarification before purchase.

Does a Tesla demo vehicle come with a warranty?
Tesla says its demo vehicles carry the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty and Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty. Check the individual listing and purchase documents for the applicable coverage and terms; do not assume that the remaining coverage is identical across vehicles.
Is a demo Tesla considered new, and can it qualify for incentives?
Tesla says demo vehicles are typically considered new because they have not been titled to another individual. It advises buyers to confirm the vehicle’s status with their local DMV. Incentive eligibility depends on the applicable state program, so verify the rules for your location and the particular vehicle before counting on a tax credit or other incentive.

- Open Tesla’s inventory and look for listings labeled “Demo Vehicle.” Availability depends on local inventory.
- Select a listed vehicle and identify the closest delivery location. Review the configuration, price, mileage and condition details available for that unit.
- Confirm delivery timing, warranty details, payment options, amount due and any local registration or incentive questions with Tesla before placing the order.
- Place the order and pay the one-time, non-refundable order fee. Depending on location, leasing, financing, outright purchase and trade-in may be available.
- Plan for home charging and any accessories you need. Tesla advises demo-vehicle buyers to plan home charging and order charging accessories; the right equipment depends on your vehicle, electrical setup and local requirements.
When does buying a demo vehicle make sense?
A demo vehicle may suit a buyer who finds a suitable configuration in local inventory and values potentially faster delivery or a lower price enough to accept demonstration use and expected wear. A custom order may be a better fit when the available demo vehicles do not match the desired configuration or condition. Decide using the actual listing: compare its price, mileage, visible condition, configuration, delivery timing, warranty coverage and local registration or incentive treatment.
