But Tesla’s reported second-quarter 2026 deliveries then rose 25% year over year to 480,126 vehicles. The rebound weakens the case for describing the current trend as a continuing sales collapse; it does not prove that Elon Musk caused the earlier declines or that Tesla’s financial outlook is resolved.
Why were investors worried about Tesla sales?
The concern grew out of a real downturn. Tesla deliveries declined in 2024 and again in 2025. On March 11, 2026, Reuters reported that consensus delivery-growth estimates had been cut to about 3.8%, from 8.2% in January, and that some prominent analysts expected deliveries to fall again that year. Those were forecasts at the time, not final results.
Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein told Reuters that he was forecasting a third consecutive annual delivery decline, citing weakness in two of Tesla’s three largest markets. That forecast preceded the Q2 2026 rebound.
Is Elon Musk causing Tesla sales to fall?
There is evidence that Musk’s political activity and the backlash it generated were cited by investors and analysts as possible contributors to weaker demand. But the available reporting does not quantify how much of Tesla’s sales change was caused by Musk, and it does not establish him as the sole cause.

Analysts and investors also pointed to several other possible factors:
- Competition: Other automakers offered a broader range of electric vehicles. AutoForecast Solutions’ Sam Fiorani told Reuters that the Model 3 and Model Y updates were not radical enough to regain all of Tesla’s lost market share against distinctly styled, well-equipped competitors.
- U.S. policy: The loss of U.S. EV tax credits was cited as a potential drag on demand.
- Product lineup: The age and appeal of Tesla’s models, as well as weak uptake of cheaper, stripped-down versions, were among the concerns raised.
- Regional demand and pricing: Conditions differ by market, and the evidence does not support attributing changes in every region to one cause.
These are attributed explanations, not a proven breakdown of what caused the declines. The Q2 delivery total reported by the Associated Press was not separated by country, so it cannot show that demand recovered in every market.

What changed in Q2 2026?
Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in the second quarter of 2026, up from 384,122 in Q2 2025—a 25% year-over-year increase, according to the Associated Press. The result also exceeded the roughly 401,000 deliveries analysts had expected, as reported by AP. That is a substantial change from the March forecasts of a possible third straight annual decline.
Deliveries are a useful demand indicator, but they are not a complete measure of financial performance. Tesla says its vehicle-delivery and storage-deployment figures are only two measures of performance and should not be relied on as indicators of quarterly financial results: Tesla’s Q2 2026 delivery release.

Did stronger deliveries improve Tesla’s financial results?
Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q shows that automotive sales revenue rose by $4.22 billion, or 27%, compared with Q2 2025. The company attributed the increase to approximately 25% more cash deliveries. For the first six months of 2026, automotive sales revenue rose by $6.77 billion, or 24%; Tesla said the comparison was partly affected by factories being taken down together for the Model Y changeover in the prior-year period.
Revenue growth did not mean automotive margins improved: total automotive gross margin was 16.9% in Q2 2026, compared with 17.2% a year earlier. Delivery growth therefore needs to be read alongside revenue, margins, and the costs of pursuing Tesla’s next investments.

What spending plans should investors weigh against the rebound?
Tesla reported Q2 2026 research and development expense of $2.371 billion, up 49% year over year. The company said the increase was primarily due to AI and other programs and stock-based compensation. Its filing also said it expects 2026 capital expenditure to exceed $25 billion, citing AI initiatives, compute infrastructure, data centers, manufacturing and R&D facilities, and company-operated assets.
Those figures are spending disclosures, not a forecast of how much cash Tesla will ultimately generate or use for the full year. Reuters reported in March 2026 that LSEG’s then-consensus forecast was for about $5.19 billion in negative free cash flow for the year, while Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas expected cash burn above $8 billion. Both were forecasts made at that time, not realized full-year results; the later delivery rebound does not by itself confirm or rule them out.

How can investors assess whether the recovery is durable?
Rather than treating one delivery headline as a verdict, investors can track the following measures together:
- Deliveries: Compare year-over-year results with analyst expectations, while noting that delivery growth can vary by quarter.
- Automotive revenue and gross margin: Check whether sales growth is accompanied by stable or improving margins.
- Average selling price: Consider whether delivery growth is being supported by lower prices or a shift in the mix of vehicles sold.
- Regional demand, competition, and incentives: Look for market-level evidence rather than assuming the global total reflects every country or the same causes.
- Product changes: Assess whether updates and lower-priced versions are attracting buyers, not just announced.
- Investment and cash generation: Compare R&D and capital spending with reported cash flow as full-year results become available.
