Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOpen and activate your new account before changing payment instructions. Then list every recurring deposit and payment, move each one using a supported switching service or by contacting the payer and biller, and keep enough money in the old account until pending transactions clear. The process depends on your country: the UK has a formal current-account switching service, while US, Canadian and Australian instructions generally require more direct coordination.
First, know which kind of payment you’re moving
“Direct debit” is not a universal banking procedure. In the UK, direct debits and standing orders may be included in a current-account switch. In the US, similar recurring payments are often called automatic debits or withdrawals. In Canada, they are commonly called pre-authorized debits (PADs). Australian guidance uses “direct debit.” A recurring charge to a card—such as a streaming subscription—is different from a bank-account debit and may need a separate update.
The official guidance below applies to the named countries, not every banking system. Ask your new bank and each payer or biller which payment types it can transfer, the effective dates, and what you must change yourself.
Choose a formal switch or a manual move
| Route | Where it applies | What happens | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formal current-account switch through CASS | UK, if your new bank and account are eligible | MoneyHelper says the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) takes seven working days and transfers direct debits and standing orders, moves the balance, redirects incoming payments such as salary or benefits, and closes the old account. MoneyHelper explains how to open, switch and close an account. | Confirm eligibility and the switch date with the new bank. Card subscriptions may not transfer; Chase UK says customers using its switch need to update those card details themselves. Chase UK describes its switching service. |
| Manual migration | Commonly needed in the US and Canada; also an option where no suitable formal service is available | You notify billers and deposit payers of the new account details, and ask the bank whether it can transfer payment instructions. The new account may need each payment set up individually. | Coordinate effective dates, deposits and debits directly with the bank, employer or other payer, and biller. Do not assume a bank will close the old account or transfer every instruction. |
In the US, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends opening the new account, identifying recurring transactions, changing deposit and debit instructions, and monitoring both accounts before closing the old one. Read the CFPB’s account-moving guidance. Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) similarly advises customers to identify deposits and PADs, provide the new details, and ask whether the financial institution can transfer instructions. See the FCAC guide to transferring products or services.

How to move recurring payments and deposits safely
- Open and activate the new account. Make sure you can sign in and use it, and check its terms before directing money or bills to it. Both the CFPB and FCAC put opening the new account before the transfer work.
- Build a complete transaction inventory. Review account statements and online banking history. Include direct debits or PADs, automatic withdrawals, standing orders, recurring card subscriptions, paychecks, pensions and benefits, plus checks and payments that have not yet cleared. The FCAC suggests reviewing several months of activity or the past year; the longer review can help reveal less-frequent transactions.
- Find the payment route for your country. In the UK, ask the new bank whether you can use CASS and confirm the selected switch date and eligibility. Elsewhere, ask the new bank whether it can transfer payment mandates or instructions, and which ones require your own action.
- Notify billers and deposit payers if you are moving manually. Give each creditor, utility or other service provider the new account information and ask when it will take effect. Separately update your employer, pension provider or benefits payer. Set up each payment on the new account as required; cancel an old instruction only when the replacement timing is clear.
- Update card-on-file subscriptions separately. Check app, streaming, insurance and other recurring charges against your inventory. If a switch does not move card payments, replace the old card details with the new ones directly with each merchant. Chase UK identifies card subscriptions as an exception to its switching service; do not assume every bank’s service handles them the same way.
- Coordinate the first deposit and first debit. In the US, CFPB guidance recommends finding out when the first deposit will reach the new account and arranging automatic debits to begin after it arrives. Ask billers and payers for their effective dates so a payment is not pulled from the wrong account or set up to be paid twice.
- Keep a transition balance in the old account. Leave enough to cover pending checks, debits and other transactions still in flight. Do not transfer every dollar simply because the new account is open. Continue checking the old account for items that have not yet moved or cleared.
- Verify activity before closing the old account. Check that expected income reaches the new account and that bills are paid from the intended account. The FCAC notes that keeping the old account open for several months may help avoid fees from missed checks or PADs. There is no single safe waiting period for every move; base closure on your transaction history and confirmation from the bank and payers. For a US account, the CFPB advises transferring remaining funds and obtaining written confirmation of closure.
What to do if a debit is incorrect or unauthorized
Check account activity during the transition. If a transaction is incorrect or unauthorized, contact your bank promptly and ask what steps apply to your account and location. Australian MoneySmart advises customers to contact the bank as soon as possible about an incorrect or unauthorized direct debit; its guidance says cancellation usually involves contacting both the bank and the service provider. Read MoneySmart’s direct-debit guidance. Cancellation, dispute and refund procedures vary by country, so confirm local rules and deadlines with your bank or regulator.
