What T-Mobile’s CEO Said About the 5,000-Position Workforce Reduction

On August 24, 2023, T-Mobile announced plans to reduce its workforce by close to 5,000 positions—just under 7% of its employee base. CEO Mike Sievert’s memo said the changes would begin that week and continue over the following five weeks. The announcement is historical; it is not a new layoff notice.

What did Sievert’s memo say?

In an employee email titled “Organizational News,” filed with the company’s August 24, 2023 Form 8-K, Sievert described the scale and broad areas involved:

“These shifts will impact close to 5,000 positions, a little under 7% of our total employees in locations across the country, primarily in corporate and back-office, and some technology roles.”

The memo also said: “The retail and consumer care experts who take care of our customers will not be impacted.” That was the company’s description of the planned reduction, not a guarantee about every employee’s circumstances outside this process.

Which roles were identified, and when were changes expected?

T-Mobile said corporate and back-office functions and some technology roles were the primary areas. The memo said changes would start during the week of August 24 and continue over the next five weeks. It did not provide a role-by-role list or establish the final outcome for each employee.

Why did T-Mobile say it was reducing positions?

Sievert characterized the affected work as primarily duplicative, tied to changing systems or processes, or outside the company’s current priorities. He also said T-Mobile was centralizing some work to improve efficiency and save costs. These are the company’s stated reasons, not independently established explanations for every role.

How did the financial figures change from the estimate to the annual report?

T-Mobile’s August 24, 2023 Form 8-K estimated an approximately $450 million pretax charge for the third quarter related to the workforce reduction. The company’s 2023 annual report later recorded a $462 million pretax charge related to the initiative. The first amount was an estimate at announcement; the second was the amount subsequently recorded for 2023.
