No. The $100 charge in a September 2026 report about a traveler at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, was described as a checked-baggage fee—not a new TSA fee. The report says the traveler allegedly concealed a knife in carry-on luggage to avoid paying it. That account does not establish a universal airline charge or a nationwide TSA policy.
What was the reported $100 fee for?
The September 2026 incident coverage describes the $100 as a baggage charge associated with checking luggage. It reports that a traveler at Madison’s Dane County Regional Airport allegedly concealed a knife in a carry-on to avoid that charge. The incident and fee are reported claims, not an announcement of a new TSA fee. The available reporting does not establish which airline’s fee applied or whether the amount applies to other flights or travelers. Incident report
Airlines set baggage fees, which can vary by carrier, route, fare, and other conditions. Check the operating airline’s current baggage terms for the specific itinerary before traveling; the reported amount should not be treated as a standard fee.
What TSA fee may be causing confusion?
TSA did announce a separate paid option called Confirm.ID for travelers age 18 or older who do not have a REAL ID or another acceptable identification document. TSA said the option costs $45, covers a 10-day travel period, and would be available beginning February 1, 2026. This is an identity-verification charge, not a checked-bag fee. TSA also warns that travelers using Confirm.ID should expect delays. TSA Confirm.ID announcement

| Reported Madison baggage fee | Associated with checking luggage, according to the September 2026 incident report | $100 in that report; not established as a universal charge or TSA fee. Incident report |

Can you bring a knife in carry-on luggage to avoid a bag fee?
The report does not make a knife acceptable in carry-on baggage, and concealing one is not a safe or appropriate way to avoid a fee. Because the available account does not include a primary TSA incident notice or the carrier’s applicable baggage terms, check current TSA rules and the airline’s policy directly before deciding how to transport any item. Do not rely on the reported incident as guidance.
