For sensitive skin, start with a fragrance-free mineral sunscreen labeled for sensitive skin, with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. Keep the protection essentials: SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum coverage, and water resistance. No label can guarantee that a sunscreen will not irritate your skin, so choose carefully and stop using a product that causes a reaction.
What sunscreen is good for sensitive skin?
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends choosing a sunscreen labeled “sensitive skin” and says dermatologists recommend physical, or mineral, sunscreen for people with sensitive skin. Check the active-ingredient panel for zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. AAD also advises avoiding fragrance, parabens, and oxybenzone when sensitivity is a concern. “Sensitive skin,” “natural,” and “hypoallergenic” on a package are not promises that a particular product will suit you. People can react differently to the same formula, and ingredient labels cannot predict individual tolerance.
What should I look for on a sunscreen label?
Check the protection claims first, then look at the ingredients and finish. SPF measures protection from sunburn-related UVB; broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. A water-resistance claim is time-limited, not a claim that the product is waterproof.

Is mineral sunscreen better for sensitive skin?
Mineral sunscreen is a useful starting point, not a guarantee. AAD recommends physical sunscreen for sensitive skin. If sunscreen stings or burns, AAD advises trying a formula whose active ingredients are only zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide and that has no fragrance. Choose fragrance-free, not merely unscented
In its guidance for rosacea-prone skin, AAD specifically recommends fragrance-free rather than unscented products and suggests choosing a different sunscreen if it is labeled unscented. For rosacea, it also notes that formulas containing silicone ingredients such as dimethicone or cyclomethicone may be less irritating. How can I avoid white cast from mineral sunscreen?
Mineral formulas can leave a visible white cast. A tinted sunscreen may reduce that residue; choose a shade that blends with your skin tone. Tinted formulas containing iron oxide can also help protect against visible light, which may worsen dark spots or melasma. How much sunscreen should I apply, and when should I reapply?
Apply sunscreen to exposed skin that clothing does not cover. AAD says most adults need about 1 ounce to cover the exposed body and at least 1 teaspoon for the face. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating. For water exposure, follow the product’s stated 40- or 80-minute water-resistance period and reapply as directed.
