Strava Eyes an IPO as Gen Z Embraces Running Clubs—but the Stories Are Separate

Strava’s CEO voiced an eventual IPO ambition, and Reuters reported a confidential filing in January 2026. Its running-club growth is a separate story, not proof that Gen Z is leaving dating apps.

Strava’s IPO story has advanced beyond its CEO’s stated ambition: Reuters reported in January 2026 that the company had confidentially filed to go public. That report did not confirm a completed offering, and the available reporting does not establish Strava’s IPO status as of October 8, 2026. Separately, Strava says its running clubs grew sharply in 2025 and that Gen Z respondents are more likely than Gen X to use fitness to meet people. The evidence does not show that the club trend prompted the IPO process—or that young people broadly are abandoning dating apps.

What is known about Strava’s IPO?

In comments to the Financial Times reported by Fortune, Strava CEO Michael Martin said in 2025 that the company had the “intention to go public at some point.” He gave no timetable. Fortune also reported Martin’s explanation that a listing “provides easy access to capital in case we wanted to do more and bigger acquisitions.” That describes a possible financing rationale, not a confirmed transaction.

On January 8, 2026, Reuters reported that Strava had confidentially filed for an IPO in recent weeks, citing The Information and people with direct knowledge. The report said an offering could come as soon as spring, attributing that possibility to The Information. It did not confirm an offering had occurred; Strava had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment.

That January report is the latest IPO account established here. It does not settle whether Strava later filed publicly, completed, delayed, or withdrew a listing process, so a confidential filing should not be described as an IPO that has happened.

What does the running-club trend show?

Strava’s December 2025 Year in Sport report says the company analyzed billions of activities and drew on survey insights from more than 30,000 Strava users and non-users. In that report, Gen Z respondents were 39% more likely than Gen X respondents to use fitness to meet people who share their interests.

Strava also reported that its total clubs nearly quadrupled in 2025, reaching one million. Within its platform, running clubs grew 3.5-fold, hiking clubs 5.8-fold, and club-organized events increased 1.5-fold year over year. These are Strava platform figures, not a count of every club or event outside the service.

  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem

The findings point to fitness as a social setting for some respondents and to substantial growth in Strava’s club activity. The report summary does not provide detailed sampling or weighting information, so its survey figures should be attributed to Strava rather than treated as representative of all young people.

Are Gen Z users replacing dating apps with running clubs?

“Trades dating apps” is headline shorthand, not a finding established by these figures. Strava’s survey result measures the reported role of fitness in meeting like-minded people; it does not quantify a move away from dating apps or show that running clubs have replaced them. The growth figures track clubs and events on Strava, not changes in dating behavior across Gen Z.

Strava’s report also says 30% of its Gen Z respondents plan to spend more on fitness in 2026, and 64% would rather spend money on gear than on a date. Those are company-reported survey findings, not evidence that all Gen Z consumers spend or socialize the same way.

What might an IPO mean for Strava’s business?

Martin’s reported comments frame a public listing as one possible way to access capital for larger acquisitions. That is a stated rationale, not proof of how Strava would use proceeds or what a public-company strategy would be. The club figures and social survey findings offer context about activity on Strava, but the sources do not connect that growth to the IPO decision.

For scale, Fortune reported a $2.2 billion valuation from a May 2025 financing round and 180 million Strava users as of December 2025. Those are dated company-business figures as reported by Fortune; total users should not be confused with monthly active users. Separately, TechCrunch’s October 2025 coverage included Sensor Tower estimates of monthly active users and subscription spending, which are estimates rather than company-reported financial results.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

  • Supported: Martin expressed an eventual intention to take Strava public, with no timetable in the comments reported by Fortune.
  • Supported: Reuters reported a confidential filing in January 2026, but did not report a completed offering.
  • Supported: Strava reported strong growth in its own clubs and a survey finding that Gen Z respondents more often cited fitness as a way to meet people than Gen X respondents.
  • Not established: Strava’s IPO outcome after the January 2026 report, a causal link between the club trend and the IPO, or a broad Gen Z shift from dating apps to running clubs.
