Steam held its first sale specifically branded as a Black Friday Sale in 2025, with the event running through December 1. That did not mean Steam had never offered Black Friday discounts before: earlier promotions crossed the same shopping period under names such as the Autumn Sale and Exploration Sale. The 2025 offers are historical, not current prices.
What was new about Steam’s 2025 Black Friday sale?
On November 24, 2025, PC Gamer reported that Steam had launched its first event specifically named the Black Friday Sale. The report described it as a one-week sale ending December 1. It also said the event was smaller in scope than Steam’s seasonal sales and did not include accompanying Points Shop freebies or trading cards.
The distinction is the sale’s branding, not the presence of discounts. Steam had previously run promotions during Black Friday under other names, so calling 2025 the first time Steam had Black Friday deals would be inaccurate.
Had Steam offered Black Friday deals before?
Yes. Valve’s own announcements show discounts spanning Black Friday in earlier years, but those events were identified as Autumn or Exploration sales:

- 2013: Valve’s November 29 post, titled “Steam Autumn Sale Day 3 – Black Friday!”, advertised savings on thousands of PC, Mac, and Linux titles and eight-hour flash sales. It also described wishlist notifications for sale prices. Read Valve’s announcement.
- 2015: The Steam Exploration Sale ran through Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Valve said listed offers ended December 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific unless otherwise stated. Read Valve’s announcement.
- 2016: The Autumn Sale ran across Black Friday and Cyber Monday, ending November 29 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Read Valve’s announcement.
- 2017: Valve again described the Autumn Sale as running through Black Friday and Cyber Monday; it ended November 28 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Read Valve’s announcement.
So the precise claim is that 2025 was the first dedicated Steam event branded as a Black Friday Sale—not Steam’s first sale to overlap Black Friday.

Why do Steam discounts appear under different sale names?
Steam hosts both platform-promoted seasonal events and sale activity organized by developers or publishers. Valve’s Steamworks sale-page documentation describes developer- and publisher-organized, themed, showcase, and regional sale pages, with a review process for submissions. A discount visible on Steam therefore does not, by itself, mean Valve has announced a named platform-wide event.
