Southwest’s Customer of Size Policy: Extra-Seat Rules and Complaints About Seat Size

Southwest revised its extra-seat policy in May 2026 after criticism of an earlier advance-purchase rule. Here’s how the current policy works and what is—and isn’t—known about seat size.

Southwest’s current policy may allow an airport agent to provide a free adjacent seat to a customer who needs one, but only when a neighboring seat is available. If there is no open pair, the airline says it will accommodate the customer on a later flight with two open seats. Southwest recommends arranging adjacent seats in advance. The change, effective May 29, 2026, replaced a stricter advance-purchase rule that had drawn criticism over its upfront cost and conditional refund.

Reports that Southwest seats have “gotten smaller” should be treated as complaints or perceptions, not proof of a general reduction in seat width. The airline publishes aircraft-specific dimensions, but the available sources do not establish a comparable before-and-after measurement across its fleet.

What Southwest’s Customer of Size policy says now

Southwest says a customer who “encroach[es] upon the neighboring seat(s)” may need to occupy two adjacent seats. Its Customer of Size policy identifies the armrest as the definitive boundary between seats; it does not state a weight threshold.

Under the May 29, 2026 revision, airport agents may provide a free adjacent seat when one is available. The Washington Post reported that Southwest said it would accommodate a customer on a later flight with two open seats if no adjacent pair is available. Southwest also recommends contacting the airline in advance to arrange seats together when needed. The report says customers can book the lowest fare and contact customer service to reserve adjacent seats.

For an itinerary involving a partner airline, Southwest’s policy says to contact that airline directly about purchasing an additional seat. Check Southwest’s live policy before travel because the rules may change.

How the current rule differs from the January 2026 rule

Policy period How an extra seat was handled What happened if seats were unavailable Refund terms
January 27, 2026 rule, as reported by the Associated Press Customers who needed an extra seat were required to buy it in advance. If they had not, they could be required to buy one at the airport. The AP reported that a customer could be rebooked if the flight was full. The AP reported a refund was conditional: the flight had to depart with at least one open seat, both tickets had to be in the same booking class, and the customer had to request the refund within 90 days.
May 29, 2026 revision, as reported by The Washington Post Airport agents may provide a free adjacent seat when one is available. Southwest recommends arranging adjacent seats in advance when needed. If no adjacent pair is available, Southwest said it would accommodate the customer on a later flight with two open seats. The May report describes the airport seat as free when available; it does not state a comparable refund process for an advance purchase.

The distinction matters for budgeting: the January rule could require paying for two seats upfront and then meeting several conditions to get the extra-seat fare refunded. The May revision offers another possibility at the airport, but it depends on an open adjacent seat and can involve travel on a later flight.

Why customers and advocates objected

Coverage of the earlier policy described concerns about the financial burden of paying for two seats in advance, uncertainty about securing adjacent seats under assigned seating, and the dignity and accessibility of the process. These are reported concerns and individual accounts, not evidence that every passenger has the same experience. The Los Angeles Times reported that Southwest estimated fewer than 1% of its customers request an extra seat annually; that is the airline’s estimate, not a count of customers affected by the 2026 rule changes.

In a March 31, 2026 letter, the Obesity Action Coalition said reports of enforcement were troubling and argued that the policy lacked a uniform standard, leaving decisions to employee discretion. The letter quoted a Southwest spokesperson saying staff have latitude to require an extra seat when they determine the criteria are met. The letter reflects the organization’s position; it is not an independent audit of policy enforcement.

The Washington Post quoted Tigress Osborn, executive director of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, describing the May change as a “tiny adjustment.” Osborn’s criticism focused on the possibility of a later flight when no adjacent pair is available, which she said could complicate connections. That is her assessment of the policy’s consequences, not a measured outcome for all affected travelers.

Did Southwest make its seats smaller?

The available sources do not establish that Southwest generally reduced seat width across its fleet. The phrase “seats have gotten smaller” is best understood as a complaint or perception unless tied to a documented passenger quotation. Southwest has announced redesigned cabin interiors and new RECARO seats, but that announcement does not itself show that the replacement seats are narrower.

Southwest’s aircraft specifications list different dimensions by aircraft. For example, the page lists the Boeing 737-700 seat width as ranging from 15.5 inches at its narrowest to 17.0 inches at its widest. Those figures apply to that aircraft type, not every Southwest seat; check the live specifications and assigned aircraft before relying on a dimension. Seat width is distinct from seat pitch, the front-to-back spacing between rows.

Southwest’s cabin-modernization announcement confirms a cabin refresh and new seats, but the sources reviewed do not provide a comparable old-seat/new-seat width series or a credible fleet-wide study demonstrating general narrowing.

What to check before booking

  • Read Southwest’s current extra-seat policy and contact the airline to discuss arranging adjacent seats in advance.
  • Ask what will happen if two adjacent seats are unavailable on your planned flight, especially if a later departure could affect a connection or other plans.
  • If you are considering buying an extra seat, confirm the current fare and refund conditions directly with Southwest rather than relying on descriptions of the January 2026 rule.
  • For seat dimensions, check the aircraft-specific specifications and remember that aircraft assignments can vary.

Southwest says only a seat-belt extension supplied by the airline is approved for onboard use; its policy does not endorse a generic third-party extender.
