Southwest Airlines said a network-connectivity outage affecting its dispatching and operations system temporarily paused departures. The airline said it restored the system and resumed departures, but its statement does not give the incident date, duration, or number of flights or passengers affected. Separately, Southwest announced two leadership hires in April 2026 and two board appointments in August 2026.
What Southwest confirmed about the outage
In a statement, Southwest said: “Southwest Airlines temporarily paused departures this afternoon due to a brief outage that affected network connectivity to our dispatching and operations system.” The company said the system was restored and departures resumed. Southwest’s outage statement does not identify the incident’s date or clock time, how long the interruption lasted, or how many departures or passengers were affected. It also does not state a cause.
The airline’s description supports saying that departures were temporarily paused because of a connectivity issue involving dispatching and operations. It does not establish that every Southwest operation or customer-facing service was unavailable. The word “widespread” is not a measured scale: Southwest published no incident count or scope figure in the statement.
Why connectivity to operations systems matters
Southwest’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 5, 2026, describes the company’s reliance on information-technology systems across its website and reservation system, mobile app, dispatch and flight tracking, telecommunications, flight planning and scheduling, crew scheduling, and other operational functions. A disruption to connectivity involving dispatching and operations can therefore matter to the airline’s ability to coordinate departures. The filing provides general context only; it does not explain what caused this outage. Southwest’s 2025 Form 10-K
