Sony’s interest in buying Warner Bros. Discovery assets was reported in June 2025, but the available reporting did not confirm a formal offer or negotiations. The claim covered more than games: it described possible interest in streaming and studio assets as well, conditional on separating them from WBD’s cable networks. The rumor is now historical: Paramount completed its acquisition of WBD on October 6, 2026.
What did the report say about Sony and Warner Bros. Games?
On June 18, 2025, Insider Gaming reported that Sony was reportedly interested in Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming, studio, and gaming assets. The article attributed the claim to SEScoops and said the interest depended on those assets being separated from WBD’s cable networks.

That report did not establish that Sony submitted a bid, entered negotiations, or reached an agreement. Insider Gaming said it had contacted Sony and WBD for comment; the article contains no confirming company response. The accurate description is therefore a reported possibility, not a confirmed Sony attempt to buy the games division.
Was the reported interest limited to games?
No. The reported scope was broader than Warner Bros. Games alone: it included streaming and studio assets, with HBO Max, intellectual property, and gaming assets among the examples cited. The condition about separating those businesses from cable networks also means the report was not simply about Sony purchasing a standalone games unit.

What happened after the Sony report?
WBD began a strategic alternatives review
On October 21, 2025, WBD announced a review of strategic alternatives after receiving unsolicited interest from multiple parties for the whole company and Warner Bros. Its board said options included continuing a planned separation, selling the whole company, or pursuing separate transactions involving Warner Bros. and/or Discovery Global.
WBD’s statement did not identify Sony as one of the interested parties and did not confirm a sale of Warner Bros. Games. It establishes that the company was considering strategic options, not that the earlier Sony report had become a confirmed transaction.

Paramount completed its acquisition of WBD
On October 6, 2026, Skydance announced that Paramount had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery after obtaining required regulatory approvals. The company announcement and Associated Press report confirm the close. That outcome means the 2025 Sony rumor is not an open purchase scenario.
Did Sony make an offer, and what was it worth?
The cited reporting gives no Sony offer amount, formal terms, or confirmation of negotiations. It does not establish whether Sony privately considered a bid or held undisclosed discussions. WBD’s later statement confirms interest from multiple parties but does not name Sony, so it cannot resolve that private history.

Warner Bros. Games was part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader portfolio discussed in the 2025 report. The completed Paramount acquisition establishes the new corporate ownership outcome for WBD, rather than a Sony purchase. The cited close announcements do not provide a separate transaction or standalone ownership breakdown for the games division.
