In its FY2025 second-quarter results, Sony reported continuing-operations sales of ¥3,107.9 billion, up 5% year over year. The 8% referred to a higher full-year operating-income forecast compared with the forecast issued in August. Separately, management set a PS5 install-base target; it did not report that target as annual console sales.
What Sony’s Q2 figures actually mean
Sony’s fiscal year runs from April through March, so Q2 FY2025 covers July through September 2025. The company’s results distinguish reported quarterly performance from revised forecasts for the full fiscal year.
| Figure | Period and basis | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Sales: ¥3,107.9 billion | FY2025 Q2, continuing operations | Up 5% year over year |
| Operating income: ¥429.0 billion | FY2025 Q2, continuing operations | Up 10% year over year |
| Sales forecast: ¥12.0 trillion | FY2025 full year, consolidated forecast revised in November | Up ¥300 billion, or 3%, from the August forecast |
| Operating-income forecast: ¥1.43 trillion | FY2025 full year, forecast revised in November | Up ¥100 billion, or 8%, from the August forecast |
That distinction matters to anyone interpreting the headline: quarterly sales were higher than a year earlier, but by 5%. The 8% was a change to Sony’s expected full-year operating income relative to its earlier forecast, not an observed rise in Q2 revenue. Sony’s FY2025 Q2 results report these measures separately.
What Sony said about the PS5 target
In its FY2025 Q2 Q&A, Sony said it intended to expand the PS5 install base during the year-end selling season, “targeting over 90 million units by the start of the next fiscal year.” That is management guidance about a cumulative install-base milestone—not a reported annual hardware-sales result. An install base is cumulative; it should not be confused with units sold during one quarter or fiscal year.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony also said it would not comment on its pricing strategy. The target was forward-looking, and Sony cautioned investors that risks and uncertainties could cause actual results to differ materially from forward-looking statements. The FY2025 Q2 Q&A contains the target and the company’s caution.
What later disclosures say—and do not establish
By FY2026 Q1, Sony said it had secured enough memory to meet its projected PS5 hardware sales volume for that fiscal year. It also revised its FY2026 consolidated sales forecast to ¥12.5 trillion and its operating-income forecast to ¥1.72 trillion. These are later outlook statements, not confirmation that the earlier 90-million install-base target was met. Sony’s FY2026 Q1 results provide that updated outlook.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s hardware data page lists 16.0 million PS5 units sold on a sell-in basis in FY2025, more than 95 million cumulative worldwide units as of June 30, 2026, and 1.6 million units in FY2026 Q1. Sell-in refers to units sold into the distribution channel; it is not the same measure as consumer purchases. The page notes that returned and refurbished products are included. These figures provide later hardware context, but they do not turn the earlier management target into a reported annual-sales figure. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s data page identifies the periods and basis.
As of October 8, 2026, Sony’s investor-relations schedule listed FY2026 Q2 results for November 5, 2026. That release was still pending, so it cannot be treated as reported data. Sony’s investor-relations calendar lists the scheduled date.
