That is a possible timeline, not confirmation of a completed takeover or a firm deadline. The parties and terms were not disclosed, according to The Post’s report.
What Hallett reportedly told supporters
The Post reported that Hallett said discussions with potential investors were continuing and that fresh investment was being treated as urgent. He reportedly said the talks could conclude within weeks. The newspaper said non-disclosure agreements prevented him from naming the parties. These remarks are available through the newspaper’s account of the forum; no direct official transcript was surfaced.
The update establishes that discussions were reported to be underway. It does not establish that a transaction had been agreed, that a takeover was imminent, or that control had changed.
What Hallett has said about selling control
In a message published by Plymouth Argyle on 4 December 2025, Hallett answered the question of whether he would sell control: “The answer is yes, to the right party.” He described a phased route as his preference: a new investor would initially take a minority stake, demonstrate alignment with the club’s values and ambitions, and potentially take control later. He also said he would seriously consider an immediate majority sale if a buyer had the right intentions and resources. Read Hallett’s club-published message.

- Football Club Memorabilia design. Perfect for Plymouth Argyle football fans.
- Come on The Pilgrims!
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
That earlier statement explains his stated openness to a sale, but it is not evidence that the parties in the August 2026 talks had agreed to either route.
What the public ownership record shows
The Companies House persons-with-significant-control record surfaced for this update lists Simon Hallett as active, with 75% or more of the shares and voting rights and the right to appoint or remove directors. That supports saying the public record still showed him as a person with significant control when the record was checked. It does not reveal the status or terms of private negotiations, or establish what may have happened after the record was accessed. View the Companies House record.

The financial figures belong to different periods
The figures cited around Argyle’s investment needs describe different financial periods and should not be combined into a single current bill or forecast.
| Figure | What it refers to | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|
| £9.8 million | Hallett’s reported loan to the club after relegation from the Championship | BBC Sport, reported in 2026 |
| Around £18 million | The club’s reported record wage bill in its final Championship season; this is a historical figure, not its current wage bill | BBC Sport, reported in 2026 |
| £2.4 million loss | Argyle’s loss for the financial year ended 30 June 2024 | The club’s announcement of its financial statements |
| £11 million additional investment | Investment by Hallett and Argyle Green during the 2023/24 season | The club’s announcement of its financial statements |
In its announcement of the accounts for the year ended 30 June 2024, the club said it needed additional external investment to fulfil its mission and described progress in seeking partners aligned with its vision and values. That shows external investment had been a stated strategic need before the 2026 forum update; it does not establish that the same prospective investors or terms remained involved. What is confirmed—and what is not
- Reported: On 17 August 2026, The Post said investor discussions were continuing and could conclude within weeks.
- Not disclosed: The prospective investors’ identities and any deal terms, according to the report.
- Previously stated by Hallett: He was open to selling control to the right party, preferring a phased investment but willing to consider an immediate majority sale under suitable conditions.
- Public ownership record: Companies House listed Hallett as active with significant control when checked; this does not settle the status of private talks.
- Not established by the cited update: An agreed transaction, a completed takeover, or a confirmed date for a change of control.
Because the forum remarks were reported second-hand and discussions can change, readers should treat the August update as a report of ongoing talks rather than a deal announcement.
