Short-Term and Long-Term Goals: Examples and Tools to Use

Short-term goals make long-term outcomes actionable. See examples across education, careers, and business, then use a simple framework to write and track your next goal.

Short-term goals are actionable milestones you can work on soon; long-term goals are the broader outcomes those milestones help you reach. There is no universal cutoff between the two: choose time horizons that fit the goal, then connect the outcome to a measurable milestone and a next action.

What is the difference between short-term and long-term goals?

A long-term goal describes a destination, such as completing a degree, moving into a new career, or growing a business. A short-term goal is a nearer target that makes progress toward that destination concrete. For example, “build a career in data analysis” is an outcome; “complete an introductory course by September 30” is a milestone that can move you toward it.

The labels depend on context, not a fixed rule. Smartsheet’s business guidance commonly places short-term goals at 1–6 months, mid-term goals at 6 months–2 years, and long-term goals at 2 years or more, usually no more than five years (Smartsheet). The University of Notre Dame Graduate School uses about one year for short-term, 2–3 years for mid-term, and 3+ years for long-term goals in graduate-student examples (Notre Dame Graduate School). Use whichever ranges make sense for your circumstances; a long-term goal for a student may have a different horizon from one for a business owner.

Examples of short-term and long-term goals

Education

A graduate student might set a short-term goal to identify a mentor or build a research skill within a year, then work toward passing qualifying exams or defending a proposal over 2–3 years. These are examples from Notre Dame’s graduate-student guidance, not a required schedule for every learner (Notre Dame Graduate School).

Career

Near-term career milestones could include updating a résumé, identifying a mentor, or completing a targeted course. A broader outcome might be defining and pursuing a career path over several years, an example included in Notre Dame’s graduate-student guidance (Notre Dame Graduate School).

An illustrative chain might be: choose a target role by May 1, speak with two people in that field by June 1, and finish a relevant course by August 31. Each action is measurable and serves the larger career direction.

Business

For a business, a short-term goal could set a measurable sales or operating target, while a longer goal could describe a larger change. Smartsheet gives examples of increasing sales over three years and expanding a restaurant from one location to four over four years; these illustrate possible plans, not general benchmarks or guarantees (Smartsheet).

Business Queensland recommends dividing long-term goals into shorter stages so that progress can be acted on and monitored (Business Queensland). A milestone might be to reach a defined monthly sales figure by a stated date, followed by a review of whether staffing, inventory, or marketing needs to change.

How to turn a long-term outcome into a measurable goal

  1. Write the outcome plainly. State what you want to be different, such as earning a qualification, changing roles, or opening another location.
  2. Choose evidence of completion or progress. Name a result you can observe: a completed course, a submitted application, a sales figure, or a finished project.
  3. Check feasibility. Consider the time, skills, tools, money, and other resources available. If the goal depends on something outside your control, identify what you can do and measure.
  4. Add a reason and a date. Note why the goal matters and set a deadline for completion or a review date for a longer effort.
  5. Break it into milestones and choose the next action. Work backward from the outcome, then select one specific action you can take next.
  6. Anticipate obstacles and review progress. Record a likely barrier and a response. Check progress on a regular schedule and revise the plan when circumstances change.

SMART can help you draft goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound; it is a planning aid, not proof that the goal will be achieved. Smartsheet’s templates prompt users to consider resources, obstacles, and measures of success (Smartsheet). SAMHSA’s guidance offers another useful way to make objectives measurable by specifying responsibility, who is involved, how many, and by when (SAMHSA).

How to choose which goal to work on first

If you have several goals, compare them by their contribution to a larger outcome, urgency, effort and resources, feasibility, dependencies, and how clearly you can measure progress. A goal that unlocks other milestones may deserve earlier attention than one that can wait. Microsoft Learn describes SMART, OKRs, and the balanced scorecard as distinct frameworks for defining and measuring goals; they are organizational approaches, not interchangeable consumer products (Microsoft Learn).

Tools for planning and tracking goals

You can track a goal with paper or a basic spreadsheet. Use one place to record the outcome, measure, deadline, milestones, next action, obstacles, and review notes. A calendar can hold deadlines and review dates; a checklist can show whether individual steps are complete.

Smartsheet offers downloadable goal-setting and tracking templates, including goal plans, SMART worksheets, and trackers in spreadsheet and document formats (Smartsheet templates). A physical planner or workbook is another optional format, but no particular product is necessary: choose a system you will actually update.

Simple tracking sheet

  • Outcome: What do I want to accomplish?
  • Measure: What result will show progress or completion?
  • Deadline or review date: When will I finish or reassess?
  • Milestones: What stages lead there?
  • Next action: What is the smallest useful step I can take now?
  • Obstacle and response: What could interrupt progress, and what will I do?
  • Review note: What changed, and should I adjust the plan?
