Ryanair closed Prime because, over its eight-month trial, the fare discounts it says members received exceeded the subscription fees it collected. The company-reported totals were €6 million in discounts against €4.4 million in fees, an implied €1.6 million shortfall—not an independently audited operating loss. Ryanair announced the closure on November 28, 2025; its later terms say new memberships became unavailable from December 1.
Why did Ryanair cancel Prime?
The subscription economics did not work for Ryanair, according to the company’s reported figures. RTÉ reported that Ryanair collected €4.4 million in Prime fees and provided €6 million in fare discounts during the eight-month trial. The difference is €1.6 million: the reported discounts exceeded fees by that amount. These are company figures reported by RTÉ, not independently audited results.
In its November 28, 2025 announcement, Ryanair Director of Communications Jade Kirwan said: “However, our Prime members have received over €6m in fare discounts, so this trial has cost more money than it generates.” (Ryanair’s closure announcement; RTÉ’s report.)
What happened, and when did Prime close?
Ryanair announced on November 28, 2025 that it was closing Prime after an eight-month trial. The company’s later terms give a separate operational date: new members could no longer purchase Prime from December 1, 2025. The announcement date and the date new memberships became unavailable refer to different events, not conflicting closure dates. (Ryanair announcement; Ryanair Prime terms.)

Can you still join Ryanair Prime?
No. Ryanair’s terms say new memberships have been unavailable since December 1, 2025. The terms also say memberships are not renewable and that Ryanair is not obliged to offer a replacement programme. Prime is therefore a service winding down for existing members, not an offer open to new customers.
Do existing members keep their benefits?
Ryanair said its 55,000 existing members would continue to receive exclusive monthly low-fare offers until October 2026. That announcement does not mean every member’s full benefits run until that date: the terms say each membership lasts 12 months from payment, and benefits apply only to flights departing during that individual contract period. Any unused benefits expire at the end of the period and are non-refundable and non-transferable. (Ryanair announcement; Ryanair terms.)

What did Prime membership include?
The terms describe several benefits, each subject to conditions, eligibility and availability:
- Discounted fare sales: members could access special fare offers on eligible flights.
- Reserved seating: a limited allocation of seats was included, subject to the programme’s rules and availability.
- Travel insurance: cover was subject to eligibility requirements, exclusions and other policy terms; it was not unrestricted insurance for every member or trip.
The 12-month contract and end-of-period expiry rules apply to benefits generally. The exact availability and conditions of an offer or insurance cover depend on the terms, rather than the membership label alone. (Ryanair Prime terms.)

Are other travel memberships equivalent?
RTÉ’s coverage mentions Wizz Air membership services and eDreams Prime as other offerings in the travel market. That alone does not establish that either is a direct substitute for Ryanair Prime, available in every country, or comparable on price and benefits. Before paying for any travel membership, check its current availability in your market, local price, qualifying fares, seat or baggage benefits, insurance terms and cancellation rules.
