Runlayer announced its emergence from stealth in November 2025 with an $11 million seed round, reported as led by Khosla Ventures general partner Keith Rabois and Felicis. The financing was tied to a launch pitch for enterprise security controls over Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and AI tools—not a claim that $11 million is the company’s total or latest funding. Runlayer’s homepage now lists a later June 24, 2026 announcement of a $30 million raise, but does not state that round’s terms. SecurityWeek; TechCrunch; Runlayer.
What Runlayer announced in November 2025
Runlayer said it was coming out of stealth after four months and announced an $11 million seed round. SecurityWeek and TechCrunch reported that the round was led by Khosla Ventures general partner Keith Rabois and Felicis. SecurityWeek also reported additional angel backing. The announcement established the size of that seed round; it does not establish how much the company ultimately closed or its total funding over time. SecurityWeek; TechCrunch.
Runlayer is an enterprise software company, so the financing is a business funding announcement rather than a consumer investment offering. The coverage does not describe a way for individual readers to invest in the company.
What the launch product was designed to do
At launch, Runlayer positioned its product as a security control layer for enterprise use of MCP servers and AI tools. MCP is a protocol for connecting AI applications or agents to external tools and data sources. The security concern behind the pitch is that these connections can give AI systems access to sensitive resources or actions; organizations need visibility into those connections and ways to limit or interrupt risky activity.

Gateway, monitoring, and threat controls
SecurityWeek described capabilities to monitor AI access and usage, log MCP calls, detect MCP attack patterns, and block threats in real time. The report said customers could deploy the platform on their own infrastructure or use Runlayer’s cloud, and configure pre-vetted MCP servers. These were capabilities described in launch coverage, not independently tested results. SecurityWeek.
Identity and agent permissions
TechCrunch described the launch product as combining an MCP gateway with threat detection, agent observability, tools for developing AI automations, and identity-based permissions. It reported that Runlayer matched an agent’s permissions to those of the human user. The distinction matters to security teams: an agent should not automatically receive broader access than the person or workflow authorizing it. This, too, is a reported product design rather than a verified performance claim. TechCrunch.
What Runlayer said about early customers
At launch, Runlayer claimed dozens of customers, including eight unicorns. TechCrunch reported that the company cited Gusto, dbt Labs, Instacart, and Opendoor among those eight unicorn or public-company customers. These were company-reported traction figures relayed by the publications, not audited customer totals. SecurityWeek; TechCrunch.
How the company’s current pitch differs
Runlayer’s homepage now describes the platform as an “AI Control Plane,” a broader positioning than the launch-era MCP security framing. Its current product description includes discovery of shadow AI, governance over agent access and actions, runtime scanning of tool calls and outputs, and AI usage and cost monitoring. It also presents an enablement layer built around a governed MCP gateway, an MCP catalog, and reusable skills and plugins. Those current descriptions should not be read as a complete account of what was available at launch. Runlayer.

The homepage also lists a June 24, 2026 announcement, “We Raised $30M to Help Companies Go All In on AI.” That later headline indicates another funding announcement after the November 2025 seed round, but the homepage excerpt does not specify its terms. The $11 million figure therefore refers specifically to the 2025 seed round, not Runlayer’s latest announced financing or lifetime total. Runlayer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the financing matters to enterprise buyers
Runlayer’s launch addressed a practical tension for companies adopting AI agents: teams want agents to connect to useful tools, while security teams need controls over what those agents can reach and do. A gateway, activity logs, threat monitoring, and identity-aware permissions are approaches intended to make those connections more governable. Whether they fit a particular organization depends on its systems, policies, and deployment needs; the launch reports do not establish comparative performance or independent product validation.
For a business evaluating the category, the launch coverage points to three useful questions: whether the platform can be deployed in the organization’s required environment, what activity it records or can block, and how it maps agent permissions to existing identities. The reporting said Runlayer supported customer infrastructure or vendor-cloud deployment and integrated with existing identity providers, but organizations would need to confirm current product details directly.
