Elon Musk said Sam Altman received a refund within 24 hours after Tesla fixed a problem with Altman’s cancellation request. The cited reporting does not independently confirm that the money was transferred, so the outcome is Musk’s public claim—not a verified payment record.
Did Sam Altman get his Tesla Roadster deposit back?
According to TechCrunch’s November 1, 2025 report, Musk wrote that the issue had been fixed and Altman received a refund within 24 hours. TechCrunch did not cite Tesla transaction records or an independent confirmation from Altman, so the reported resolution should be attributed to Musk.
Why did Sam Altman ask Tesla for a refund?
Altman said he was trying to cancel his reservation after an email to Tesla’s Roadster reservation address bounced. In a post dated October 30, 2025, he said he had been excited about the car and understood delays, but that “7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait,” according to Electrek’s October 31 report and TechCrunch’s October 31 report.
How much was the Tesla Roadster deposit?
TechCrunch reported that Altman sought a $50,000 refund. Electrek reported that Tesla accepted deposits of $50,000 for the standard second-generation Roadster and $250,000 for the Founders Series. Those are distinct reported reservation amounts; the coverage does not include an order record establishing the exact breakdown of Altman’s payment.
