In a July 2023 interview, BigIron Auctions CEO Mark Stock described unusually strong resale values for some farm equipment during the pandemic, citing a hay processor that sold for more than its original 2009 purchase price. His account offers a window into how supply constraints and labor shortages affected machinery auctions at the time—not a guide to prices today.
How did the pandemic affect equipment sales?
Stock pointed to pandemic-era supply-chain and labor shortages as factors affecting equipment values. One example he recounted was a hay processor bought new in 2009 for $8,900 and sold 14 years later for $14,050. That is a single transaction Stock described in the interview, not a market-wide statistic or independently verified price trend.
He also said tractors bought between 2013 and 2018 were selling for more than their original new prices at the time of the interview. The Q&A did not provide a sample size or market-wide data series, so the observation should be understood as Stock’s account in 2023—not current pricing guidance.
What farmers were looking for
Stock said labor shortages led some farmers to seek equipment that could get work done faster. As an example, he described a farmer selling a three-year-old planter to buy a high-speed planter. He also speculated that more normal supply chains and lower grain prices could shift equipment sales; the interview did not establish whether that forecast came true.

How did Stock describe the move to online auctions?
In the interview, Stock traced the business’s history with his brother Ron. Ron attended auction school in the 1980s, when farmers were dealing with high interest rates and selling machinery to get by. The brothers began a full-service machinery auction business in 1984, handling tasks such as cleanup, arranging equipment, and load-out.
Stock said they were approached about online auctions in the late 1990s and eventually launched Proxibid. The brothers left in 2009 and formed BigIron’s timed-only online auction platform. The interview says BigIron sells agricultural machinery, classic cars, and real estate.

How does BigIron’s timed auction handle late bids?
Stock described an extension rule intended to give other bidders a chance to respond: when bids arrive near closing, the auction extends rather than ending at a fixed instant. He compared the approach to a live auctioneer continuing while bidders remain interested. This is Stock’s description of BigIron’s design in the 2023 interview.
Stock also estimated that close to 70% of items sold were bought on mobile devices. That was a company-specific estimate he gave in the interview, not an independently verified statistic.

What did the Sullivan Auctioneers acquisition mean?
The interview says BigIron acquired Sullivan Auctioneers in summer 2022. Stock said BigIron intended to retain the Sullivan name and combine the companies’ bidder bases and machinery inventory. He described the combination as a way to improve the experience for buyers and sellers; that was his stated rationale, not an independently measured outcome.
