Global payroll platforms can bring payroll data, approvals, payments, and reporting for workers in multiple countries into a coordinated process. They do not all provide the same service: a platform may support payroll for your own local entities, manage payroll administration, execute payments, or arrange an Employer of Record (EOR). Before choosing one, map each worker’s country and employment arrangement, then verify who employs the worker, handles filings, and sends funds.
How global payroll works for a remote team
A global payroll platform can standardize payroll information across countries, coordinate calculations and approvals, arrange payments, and consolidate reporting. It may connect to payroll outputs from local teams or external providers, rather than replacing every existing system. The exact division of work varies by product and country.

The term “global payroll” does not establish who is the legal employer or who is responsible for local tax and employment filings. Those responsibilities depend on the arrangement and the applicable country rules. Treat vendor descriptions as explanations of their services, not as legal advice.
Choose the service model before comparing platforms
Payroll for your own local entity
If your company has a local entity, payroll software or an outsourced payroll provider may support payroll for employees of that entity. Deel says its payroll supports companies running payroll through their own entities, with self-serve or managed service available by country. Papaya says an employer can hire through its own local entity without an EOR, while noting greater complexity and legal liability. Confirm which party calculates payroll, files and pays statutory amounts, and bears contractual responsibility.

Outsourced payroll administration
An outsourced provider may handle payroll operations for an entity your company already owns. This is distinct from an EOR: outsourcing payroll administration does not, by itself, make the provider the worker’s legal employer. Confirm the scope country by country, including filings, payment execution, support, and escalation responsibilities.
Employer of Record
An EOR arrangement is a separate employment model in which a provider may employ a worker on your company’s behalf, subject to the country and contract. Papaya’s FAQ says EOR suitability depends on the country. Ask who is named as employer, what responsibilities remain with your company, and how the arrangement works in the specific destination before relying on it.

What the reviewed platforms say they offer
Deel: payroll coordination with flexible country-level service
Deel describes payroll for employees and contractors, with self-serve or managed payroll chosen by country. It says customers can combine those approaches, import employee, contractor, EOR, and PEO records, and view third-party payrolls alongside Deel-run payroll. It also describes foreign-exchange handling, local payment rails, multicurrency payouts, and crypto payments where supported. Listed integrations include Workday, SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, BambooHR, HiBob, Okta, and Azure AD. These are Deel’s product claims, not independently tested findings. See Deel’s payroll page.
Deel says small and midsize businesses may be live in one to two weeks and describes a phased rollout for larger or multi-entity organizations. That timing is a vendor estimate, not a guaranteed implementation schedule. A global-payroll page surfaced a price of USD 29 per employee per month and a one-off implementation fee of USD 1,000 per entity; the page showed no publication year, and the quote may vary by geography, plan, and time. Confirm current pricing and every add-on directly with Deel. See Deel’s global payroll page.

Deel’s payroll page also reports “60% less time processing payroll,” “75% fewer payroll employee queries,” and “67% return on investment,” attributing the figures to Forrester TEI. The page does not establish the underlying study’s year or methods, so these vendor-reported figures should not be treated as expected results for another company.
Papaya Global: payment services that may connect to existing payroll
Papaya’s FAQ describes payments to workers and authorities, local-currency payouts, payment tracking, payment APIs, and multiple payment methods. It says its payments reach more than 160 countries and support more than 130 currencies, and reports that 95% of payments are delivered on the same day they are initiated. These are Papaya’s claims, not guarantees for a particular payment. Confirm destination and currency availability, funding requirements, cut-off times, foreign-exchange terms, and delivery expectations for each payment corridor. See Papaya Global’s FAQ.

Papaya says its payment solution can connect to payroll outputs from in-house systems and outsourcing providers, which may allow a company to consider payment services without migrating its entire payroll operation. Its FAQ also describes workforce payroll, EOR, and contractor arrangements. Papaya says payment services are offered through Azimo, its licensed payments arm, and references J.P. Morgan and other tier-one banking rails. Those statements are vendor claims; confirm current licensing, safeguarding arrangements, market availability, and contractual terms before relying on them.
The FAQ describes the service in promotional terms: “Global payroll for remote or distributed teams is simplified and optimized with Papaya Global’s AI-powered platform.” That is Papaya’s wording, not an independent assessment.

How to compare platforms for your team
Compare vendors against the same real operating needs. Country-count headlines alone do not show whether a particular worker type, payment method, or service model is available in the country that matters to you.
- Country and worker coverage: List each destination and whether the person is an employee of your entity, a contractor, an EOR employee, or covered by another arrangement. Ask which product and payment rails apply to that exact combination.
- Legal and operational responsibility: Identify the legal employer, who calculates payroll, who files and pays statutory amounts, and whether a local entity is required. Check liability and escalation terms in the contract.
- Payment execution: Confirm funding and payout currencies, available methods, foreign-exchange markup, intermediary charges, cut-off times, payment-date commitments, failed-payment handling, and reconciliation evidence.
- Integrations and controls: Review HRIS and accounting integrations, API or file workflows, permissions, approval chains, audit trails, data handling, and whether the current provider can be supported during migration.
- Total cost and service: Request recurring fees and charges for entity setup, onboarding, minimums, FX, payments, off-cycle payroll, EOR, benefits, termination, and transition. Assess response times and local support in the countries you use.
A practical selection and validation process
- Inventory the workforce: Record every country, entity, worker type, and intended start date.
- Select a model for each country: Decide whether you need software for your own entity, outsourced payroll administration, or an EOR. Get local payroll or legal advice when employer status or worker classification is uncertain.
- Decide whether to separate payroll and payments: Ask whether the payment service can consume your current payroll outputs. Papaya says it can connect to existing payroll outputs; Deel says third-party payrolls can appear alongside its own workflows.
- Request comparable evidence: Ask each vendor for a country-by-country scope, complete cost schedule, sample payslip and reconciliation output, funding timetable, service levels, and migration and termination terms.
- Validate a representative cycle: Before relying on the platform for all workers, test a regular payroll, an off-cycle correction, and the process for a failed or returned payment.
What to verify before signing
Official product pages and FAQs establish what the vendors say they offer; they are not independent audits of features, coverage, pricing, performance, integrations, security, or licensing. The terms that matter can vary by destination, payment corridor, worker arrangement, and contract. For a procurement decision, verify the current product scope and written terms with the provider, and check country-specific labor, tax, classification, data-transfer, and payment requirements with appropriate local authorities or advisers.
