InfinityFree is the best starting point for most beginners, while Byet.host is the better choice if you need cron jobs and a more feature-rich PHP setup. The other six providers fit narrower use cases, from tiny experimental sites to users who specifically want cPanel-style hosting.

This is an April 2026 snapshot. Free-hosting plans and policies can change without notice, so confirm current limits before uploading anything important. None of these recommendations should be treated as independently performance-tested.

InfinityFree Most beginners 5 GB; unlimited bandwidth advertised PHP 8.3; MySQL 8.0/MariaDB 11.4 Shared-host resource restrictions still apply
Byet.host Feature-rich hobby hosting 5 GB NVMe; unlimited bandwidth advertised PHP 8.3; MySQL 8/MariaDB 11.4; cron 10 MB maximum upload
x10Hosting Traditional control panel 500 MB; unlimited bandwidth reported Softaculous and DirectAdmin reported Login and inactivity requirements
AwardSpace Small supported sites 1 GB; 5 GB monthly bandwidth PHP and MySQL Low monthly bandwidth
GoogieHost cPanel-style hosting 1 GB; 100 GB reported PHP/MySQL and Softaculous reported Approval and plan details require checking
Freehostia Tiny projects 250 MB; 6 GB reported PHP/database support reported Extremely limited storage
ProFreeHost Additional high-resource option Exact limits require verification PHP, MySQL and FTP advertised Sparse detailed plan documentation
FreeHostingNoAds Ad-free fallback Exact limits require verification Current technical details require checking Do not rely on older figures

The figures above come from provider pages or current comparison coverage, and some should be rechecked directly before publication or signup. “Unlimited bandwidth” does not mean unlimited CPU, RAM, requests, storage I/O, database connections, or uptime.

1. InfinityFree: best overall for most beginners

InfinityFree has the strongest all-round feature combination in this list. Its official page advertises 5 GB of storage, unlimited bandwidth, PHP 8.3, MySQL 8.0/MariaDB 11.4, free SSL, custom-domain support, FTP, an online file manager, .htaccess support and Softaculous installation for more than 400 applications. It also says no credit card is required and positions the plan as free forever.

That makes it a practical choice for learning PHP, deploying a portfolio, testing a database-backed script, or running a low-traffic WordPress site. Softaculous can simplify installation, but WordPress being installable does not make the service suitable for a business or ecommerce site.

Choose it if: you want the easiest general-purpose starting point with PHP, MySQL, SSL and custom domains.

Watch for: shared-host request and resource limits, absent or limited backups, and suspension for policy violations or excessive use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Byet.host: best free PHP feature set

Byet.host is the strongest alternative when scheduled tasks and conventional hosting tools matter. Its free-plan page advertises 5 GB of NVMe storage, unlimited monthly bandwidth, PHP 8.3, MySQL 8/MariaDB 11.4, unlimited MySQL databases, phpMyAdmin, FTP, a browser file manager, cron jobs, Softaculous, SSL on subdomains and custom-domain support.

Cron is a meaningful advantage for applications that need scheduled maintenance or recurring tasks. The major catch is a stated 10 MB maximum upload size. That can prevent large WordPress themes, plugins, media files, archives and database imports from uploading through the control panel.

Choose it if: you need cron jobs or a broader PHP/database feature set.

Watch for: the upload ceiling and the fact that unlimited bandwidth is not unlimited processing capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. x10Hosting: best traditional control-panel option

Tom’s Guide lists x10Hosting with 500 MB of disk space, unlimited bandwidth, DirectAdmin and Softaculous. It also highlights a 30-day login requirement, followed by suspension and eventual deletion risk if the account is not accessed. See its comparison and methodology for the reported figures.

DirectAdmin may feel familiar to anyone who has used conventional shared hosting, and Softaculous reduces installation friction. However, 500 MB leaves little room for WordPress media, backups or a growing application. The inactivity policy also makes x10Hosting a poor choice for a project you plan to leave untouched.

Choose it if: you want a conventional control panel and actively maintain the account.

Watch for: storage limits and current PHP, SSL, database, cron and upload policies, which should be confirmed before signup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. AwardSpace: best for a small site with support

AwardSpace advertises PHP and MySQL, 1,000 MB of storage, 5 GB of monthly bandwidth, no advertising, a free subdomain, a CMS installer and support for free users. Its site also makes a 99.9% uptime claim; that is a provider claim, not an independent measurement.

The fixed 5 GB bandwidth allowance is easy to understand but can disappear quickly if a site serves large images, downloads or unoptimized WordPress assets. AwardSpace describes the free plan as suitable for small blogs and similar projects, not as a platform for unpredictable traffic.

Choose it if: your site is small and support access matters.

Watch for: monthly bandwidth and the current PHP version and disabled extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. GoogieHost: best cPanel-style alternative

GoogieHost presents free hosting with a control panel, SSL and PHP/MySQL support. Tom’s Guide lists 1 GB of storage, 100 GB of bandwidth, cPanel and Softaculous.

The trade-off is signup friction: current coverage describes an application or approval process that may delay activation. Exact PHP versions, database counts, upload limits, cron support, email restrictions and account policies should be checked before choosing it for a time-sensitive launch.

Choose it if: cPanel familiarity is more important than instant deployment.

Watch for: approval delays and limits that are not clearly documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Freehostia: best for very small projects

Tom’s Guide lists Freehostia with 250 MB of storage, 6 GB of monthly bandwidth, three email accounts and ticket-based support through a custom control panel.

That storage allowance is enough for a minimal PHP experiment or brochure site, but extremely tight for WordPress, uploaded media and database backups. The custom panel may also be less transferable than cPanel or DirectAdmin. Confirm the current PHP version, SSL, database, upload and cron features before deployment.

Choose it if: your site is genuinely tiny and low traffic.

Watch for: storage, bandwidth and application requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. ProFreeHost: an alternative requiring careful verification

ProFreeHost advertises PHP, MySQL and FTP. Current comparison coverage also reports custom-domain support. However, the available first-party information does not provide enough detailed, verifiable plan data to state exact storage, PHP-version, CPU, upload, cron, email or backup limits confidently.

It may be worth testing for a low-risk hobby project, but it should rank below providers that publish clearer technical limits. Do not treat “unlimited” wording as a performance guarantee.

Choose it if: you are comfortable testing an alternative before committing important data.

8. FreeHostingNoAds: best ad-free fallback

FreeHostingNoAds is aimed at readers who specifically want to avoid forced advertising. Current comparison coverage reports custom-domain support, but exact storage, bandwidth, PHP, database, SSL, upload, cron and inactivity details should be verified on the provider’s current site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a reasonable fallback for a small ad-free PHP site only after its current limits match your application. Older articles may contain figures that no longer apply.

How to choose a free PHP host

Look beyond storage and bandwidth. Check the following before installing an application:

  • PHP: version, version switching and required extensions such as cURL, mbstring, PDO, GD, Intl, Zip and XML.
  • Database: MySQL or MariaDB, phpMyAdmin, database size, connection limits and the correct database hostname.
  • Deployment: FTP or SFTP, browser file manager, .htaccess, rewrite support and maximum upload size.
  • Operations: cron availability, execution limits, memory, CPU, request caps, inodes and background-process restrictions.
  • Domain and security: custom-domain support, DNS instructions, SSL activation and whether SSL is automatic only on a provider subdomain.
  • Retention: inactivity rules, suspension triggers, restoration options and backups.
  • Email: mailboxes, PHP mail(), SMTP restrictions and outbound sending limits.

A useful ranking should reward compatibility, practical resource limits, deployment tools, account policies, support and transparent documentation—not just an “unlimited” label.

Can free hosting run WordPress or Laravel?

Often, yes—but technical installation is not the same as suitability. InfinityFree and Byet.host advertise Softaculous or one-click application installation, making WordPress easier to deploy. A usable WordPress site still needs adequate memory, upload size, storage, reliable cron, current PHP and backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Laravel, Symfony and similar frameworks may require specific PHP extensions, rewrite rules, Composer workflows, SSH access or document-root configuration. Confirm every requirement first. A host that supports PHP in general may not support the framework’s full deployment model.

Can you use a custom domain?

Several providers advertise or are reported to support custom domains, including InfinityFree and Byet.host. You normally purchase the domain separately from a registrar, then connect it with nameservers, DNS records or a CNAME. DNS propagation and SSL issuance can take time.

A free subdomain is different from a free registered domain. A custom domain improves branding and makes migration easier, but it does not improve the host’s reliability.

How to deploy a PHP site

  1. Create the hosting account and site.
  2. Create a database and record its name, username, password and hostname.
  3. Upload the PHP files through FTP or the file manager.
  4. Update the application configuration with the database credentials.
  5. Import an SQL backup through phpMyAdmin, splitting the import if necessary.
  6. Connect your domain through the host’s DNS instructions.
  7. Activate and test HTTPS.
  8. Test PHP execution, database queries, rewrites, forms and uploads.
  9. Confirm cron and email behavior if the application needs them.
  10. Disable debugging, update the application and retain your own files and database backups.

Common problems and fixes

Uploads fail

Check the host’s maximum upload size and PHP’s upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. FTP may work when a browser upload fails, but a hard plan limit usually cannot be changed on a free tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Database connections fail

Do not assume the hostname is localhost. Copy the exact database server name from the control panel, verify the username and database prefix, and test with a minimal connection script.

Scheduled jobs do not run

Cron may be unavailable, frequency-limited or replaced by a web-triggered pseudo-cron. Byet.host explicitly advertises cron; other providers require confirmation.

Email does not arrive

Free hosts often restrict SMTP, PHP mail(), sending volume or custom-domain mailboxes. Treat email as unproven until you test delivery and authentication.

The account is suspended

Possible causes include inactivity, excessive requests, abuse or policy violations. Keep local code, database exports and uploaded files so the site can be moved without waiting for recovery.

Why 000webhost is not included

Older “best free PHP hosting” lists frequently recommend 000webhost, but current 2026 coverage reports that Hostinger shut it down in October 2024 and that its domain redirects to a Hostinger landing page. It should not be treated as an active recommendation. See DeployHQ’s 2026 coverage and FS Code’s discussion.

When paid hosting is the safer choice

Free hosting is appropriate for learning, prototypes, demonstrations and small hobby sites. Choose paid shared hosting or a VPS when the site handles customers, payments, sensitive data, memberships, unpredictable traffic or business-critical content—or when it needs dependable backups, support, SSH, queues, background workers or reliable email.

For a managed upgrade, Hostinger currently displays a Premium plan at $2.99 per month on a 48-month term, with renewal shown at $10.99 per month. For developer-controlled infrastructure, DigitalOcean Droplets start at $4 per month for a 512 MiB Basic Droplet, but DigitalOcean describes the service as IaaS: you manage the operating system, applications and data.

Those are not free-hosting equivalents. Compare the total initial cost, renewal pricing, backups, support and maintenance responsibility—not just the headline monthly figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is free PHP hosting safe?

It can be acceptable for low-risk learning and hobby projects, but keep independent code, file and database backups. Do not rely on it as the sole environment for sensitive or business-critical data.

Can I host a PHP site without paying for a domain?

Yes. Most free hosts provide a subdomain. A custom .com, .org or country-code domain is normally purchased separately.

Should I use a free VPS instead?

Only if you can manage Linux updates, firewall rules, PHP, web-server configuration, backups and security yourself. A VPS provides control, not managed hosting.

How do I leave a free host?

Export the database, download all files, record DNS and configuration settings, recreate the application on the new host, test it, then change DNS and retain the old backup.
