7 Reliable Used Luxury SUVs to Consider Without Overspending

For a practical used-SUV shortlist, start with the Acura RDX, Lexus UX, Lexus GX, Infiniti QX50, BMW X3, Porsche Macan, and Porsche Cayenne. CARFAX ranked these models highest for low five-year unexpected-repair likelihood among 2019–2023 luxury SUVs in its 2026 list. That ranking is a reliability signal—not proof that every example is affordable to buy or inexpensive to maintain. Because the original title sets no budget, this article treats “won’t break the bank” as a used-shopping goal and separately notes evidence for vehicles ranked under $40,000.

What “reliable” and “affordable” mean here

Reliability rankings measure different things, so their scores should not be blended into a single league table. CARFAX estimates the likelihood of unexpected repairs over five years for model years 2019–2023. J.D. Power counts owner-reported problems per 100 vehicles after three years. iSeeCars rates longevity, including the likelihood of reaching 200,000 miles. Each can help frame a search, but none predicts the condition or future bills of a specific used SUV.

The affordability part needs equal care. CARFAX’s seven-model ranking does not establish that every model year and trim can be purchased below a particular price, nor does it compare total ownership costs across the seven. iSeeCars does publish a separate 2026 ranking for used luxury SUVs under $40,000; its category leaders are useful alternatives, not interchangeable additions to the CARFAX list.

Seven luxury SUVs with low repair likelihood in CARFAX’s 2026 ranking

CARFAX’s August 17, 2026 ranking uses maintenance records from across the U.S. and focuses on five-year unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 models. It reports an 11.0% average for the luxury SUV segment. The percentages below are model averages within that scope, not the odds that a particular used vehicle will fail, and they do not measure repair severity or cost. Rank Model Average five-year repair likelihood Model-year context reported by CARFAX
1 Acura RDX 2.5% CARFAX says reliability improved by the end of the second generation in 2018.
2 Lexus UX 2.8% CARFAX notes a reliability dip in 2023 after a new infotainment system arrived; it also describes the cabin as tiny.
3 Lexus GX 3.0% CARFAX says reliability improved after a 2020 refresh, then dipped in 2023, the final second-generation year.
4 Infiniti QX50 4.7% CARFAX says repair statistics have been consistently strong since the model’s 2014 debut; check the specific year and service history.
5 BMW X3 4.9% CARFAX says later years improved, particularly several years into the third generation (2018–2024).
6 Porsche Macan 5.0% CARFAX says unexpected repairs declined in 2018 and 2021 as the model matured.
7 Porsche Cayenne 5.2% CARFAX describes a mixed historical record followed by excellent reliability in recent years on its ranking page.

How the seven compare as used-car candidates

Acura RDX: the lowest CARFAX repair-likelihood figure

The RDX leads CARFAX’s list at 2.5%. That makes it a sensible first model to investigate if low repair likelihood is the priority, but the percentage does not establish a purchase price or ownership-cost advantage. Compare the exact year, trim, mileage, service records, and local asking prices.

Lexus UX: a compact option, with a cabin-size trade-off

The UX has the second-lowest CARFAX figure, 2.8%. CARFAX flags a 2023 reliability dip associated with the arrival of a new infotainment system, and describes the cabin as tiny. Check that its space works for your passengers and cargo before treating its ranking as a reason to choose it.

Lexus GX: strong dependability evidence, but verify the specific year

The GX ranks third in CARFAX at 3.0%. CARFAX notes improvement after the 2020 refresh and a dip in 2023. The separate iSeeCars under-$40,000 ranking also places a 2020 Lexus GX 460 first among used luxury midsize and three-row SUVs; that is a category-specific result using a longevity rating, not the same measure as CARFAX’s repair likelihood.

Infiniti QX50: a consistent record in CARFAX’s account

At 4.7%, the QX50 is fourth on CARFAX’s list. CARFAX describes its repair statistics as consistently strong since the model’s 2014 debut. That history does not remove the need to verify the particular vehicle’s year, maintenance, and condition.

BMW X3: later model years matter

The X3’s CARFAX figure is 4.9%. CARFAX says reliability improved in later years, particularly several years into the third generation, which ran from 2018 through 2024. When comparing listings, distinguish the model year and generation rather than assuming every X3 has the same record.

Porsche Macan: improvement as the model matured

The Macan comes in at 5.0% on CARFAX’s five-year measure. The ranking page notes declines in unexpected repairs in 2018 and 2021 as the model matured. Its place on a reliability ranking does not show that a particular Macan fits your purchase or maintenance budget.

Porsche Cayenne: recent results against a mixed historical record

The Cayenne records a 5.2% CARFAX figure. CARFAX characterizes its history as mixed, with excellent reliability in recent years on the page. Use the exact model year and the vehicle’s own records to assess an example rather than relying on the nameplate average.

What the other reliability rankings add

J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It covered 184 problem areas across nine categories. The study reports 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) for the industry, 217 PP100 for premium vehicles, and 151 PP100 for Lexus, which led premium brands. Lower PP100 means fewer reported problems. The Lexus GX and UX were among the model-level award recipients. These are owner-reported problem counts, not repair probabilities, so they do not confirm or revise CARFAX’s percentages. Read J.D. For a defined $40,000 ceiling, iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking is a separate way to narrow the search. It says its longevity analysis draws on more than 312 million vehicles and considers useful lifespan and the likelihood of reaching 200,000 miles. Its top entries differ by vehicle category:

Category in the iSeeCars ranking Listed leader Reliability rating
Luxury small/compact SUVs 2024 Acura RDX 7.9/10
Luxury midsize and three-row SUVs 2020 Lexus GX 460 8.2/10
Luxury crossover SUVs 2021 Lexus RX 350 8.0/10
Luxury hybrid SUVs 2020 Lexus RX 450h 8.6/10
Subcompact luxury SUVs 2025 BMW X1 7.7/10

These are category-specific leaders under iSeeCars’ used-under-$40,000 scope, not a ranking of all seven CARFAX picks. A 7.9/10 longevity rating cannot be compared directly with a 2.5% repair-likelihood estimate. See iSeeCars’ under-$40,000 luxury SUV ranking.

How to keep a reliable SUV from becoming an expensive purchase

  1. Set a real ceiling. Decide whether your maximum covers only the vehicle price or also taxes, registration, insurance, and immediate maintenance. Neither reliability ranking provides a complete ownership-cost comparison across these models.
  2. Compare like with like. Match model year, generation, trim, mileage, drivetrain, and seating needs. A model-level average can conceal year-specific changes, as the CARFAX notes for the UX, GX, and X3 illustrate.
  3. Check the vehicle, not just the ranking. Review the specific VIN’s recall status and maintenance history. Look for gaps or evidence of neglected scheduled service, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
  4. Budget for the way you will use it. Compare insurance quotes, fuel needs, and likely maintenance for the specific vehicle. If you are considering a hybrid, crossover, compact SUV, or three-row model, make sure the category and powertrain fit your needs as well as the price.
  5. Use rankings as a filter, not a guarantee. A clean history and sound inspection do not make future repairs impossible, and a strong model average cannot account for prior damage, care, or the condition of the individual SUV.
