PayPal can make repeat checkout more convenient, let you choose among available payment sources, and keep your full card or bank account number from being shared with a merchant, according to PayPal’s US product and security pages. It also offers conditional purchase protection, app tools, promotions and credit options. Those features may suit some shoppers, but their value depends on the merchant, transaction, account eligibility and terms; they do not make PayPal the best choice for everyone.
1. Saved payment details can simplify repeat checkout
PayPal says shoppers can save preferred payment methods in its digital wallet and use them for checkout at participating merchants. That can reduce the need to re-enter card or bank details each time, particularly when you shop across multiple sites. The merchant must offer PayPal, and the checkout flow can still vary by site and transaction. PayPal describes its benefits at PayPal’s digital wallet page.

2. You can choose among available funding methods
Depending on what is linked to your account and offered for a particular checkout, you may be able to pay from a PayPal balance, bank account or linked card. The available choices are account- and transaction-dependent; do not assume every method will appear every time.
3. PayPal says it does not share your full card or bank number with the merchant
PayPal says that when you send a payment, the recipient does not receive sensitive financial details such as your credit card or bank account number. It also describes transactions as encrypted. These are PayPal’s descriptions of its service, not a guarantee against scams, unauthorized account access or other fraud. Use a strong, unique password, secure your email and PayPal account, and check payment details before authorizing a transaction. See PayPal’s US security FAQ.

Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. - To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
4. Eligible purchases may qualify for reimbursement
PayPal Purchase Protection may cover eligible claims when an item is not received or is significantly not as described. The current US terms page says it was last updated January 26, 2026. For an eligible claim, coverage may include the full purchase price and original shipping where applicable; PayPal determines eligibility using its rules and the information in the case. Read the US Purchase Protection terms before relying on it.
What the claims process requires
- You must have an account in good standing and pay for an eligible item through PayPal.
- First try to resolve the issue with the seller. If that does not work, open a dispute within the applicable deadline.
- If the dispute remains unresolved, escalate it to a claim within 20 days of opening the dispute.
- Respond to PayPal’s information requests and follow any return-shipping instructions. For a significantly-not-as-described claim, PayPal may require you to return the item at your own expense.
Coverage is not a buyer’s-remorse policy, and the terms exclude categories and situations including real estate, most vehicles, stored-value and prepaid items, financial products, donations, personal or Friends and Family payments, resale items, and certain pickup or custom-item transactions. Unauthorized transactions are governed separately. PayPal’s terms say it makes the final decision “in its sole discretion,” based on the program requirements and information it considers relevant.

5. Some shoppers may find offers or rewards
PayPal describes offers and rewards in its app, as well as rewards associated with certain PayPal cards. These extras depend on availability, the eligible purchase, redemption rules and any card-specific terms. Treat them as a possible benefit—not a guaranteed discount or a reason to choose PayPal without checking the offer’s conditions. PayPal outlines app features at its digital wallet page.
6. Pay Later can provide a credit option, with conditions
PayPal presents Pay Later products alongside ordinary payment methods at some US checkouts. Access can depend on credit approval, customer and transaction eligibility, purchase amount, merchant participation, location and product terms. Pay Later is credit, not a free discount; review the specific repayment schedule, costs and terms before accepting an offer. Do not treat the availability of installments as a reason to spend more than you can afford.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
7. The app brings wallet and some order tools together
PayPal says its app can manage payment methods, display offers, manage subscriptions and track packages, including some purchases not paid for with PayPal. Order visibility and package tracking depend on whether the purchase and carrier are supported. The app may be useful if you prefer to check several wallet and order details in one place, but it is not a guarantee that every order will appear.

- Checkout: Does the merchant accept PayPal, and is its flow more convenient for you than entering a card directly?
- Funding: Is your preferred balance, bank account or card available for that transaction?
- Payment details: What financial information does the merchant receive through each option?
- Disputes: What protection applies to the item and payment type, and what deadlines or exclusions apply?
- Rewards and credit: Are you eligible for a real offer, and do any credit terms fit your budget?
- Account and acceptance: Are you comfortable using a PayPal account, and does the merchant support it?
PayPal’s US pages explain its own features and terms; they do not establish that it is objectively safer, faster, cheaper or better than another payment method for every shopper. The practical choice is the one whose checkout, protections, costs and account requirements fit the purchase you are making.
