Square for Restaurants (UK)
Square advertises a £0-per-month restaurant plan in the UK, with open bills, order entry, menu management, and table management. Payment-processing fees still apply, and hardware costs extra. Reopening closed bills, seat management, and floor-plan customization are among the functions assigned to paid tiers. Bistroo’s FAQ describes a free entry package with no monthly subscription and basic setup features. How to choose for a cafe
Start with the way your cafe takes orders and collects payment. A simple counter operation may need less than a table-service cafe with kitchen tickets, split bills, and staff permissions. Use this checklist when comparing the free plan and the costs around it:
- Plan limits: Check order ceilings, location limits, feature restrictions, and whether reporting history is limited.
- Costs beyond the subscription: Ask about payment processing, per-order charges, add-ons, implementation, and optional hardware.
- Service workflow: Confirm table management, open bills, split bills, kitchen display or printer support, and the staff permissions you require.
- Connectivity and data: Establish whether the POS works offline, how data is stored, whether it can be exported, and how much report history is available.
- Devices and peripherals: Verify compatibility for the exact phone, tablet, receipt printer, scanner, or cash drawer you plan to use. A compatible device or peripheral should not be assumed to work with every POS.
- Local terms: Confirm supported country, payment processor, tax handling, and hardware model with the vendor before committing.
What hotels need beyond cafe billing
A restaurant POS that supports tables and kitchen orders is not necessarily a hotel billing system. If you need to post restaurant charges to guest rooms, manage folios, or connect restaurant transactions to a hotel PMS, ask the vendor to confirm those workflows explicitly.
