You can save with airline points by earning them on fares and partner purchases that fit your plans, then redeeming them only when the same flight is a better deal than paying cash. To answer “Should I use points or pay cash for this flight?”, compare the exact itinerary’s fare with its points price plus taxes and fees, and check the ticket’s change and cancellation terms. The examples below cover U.S. airline programs; credit-card transfer partners and terms depend on the issuer and country.
1. Choose a program for the routes you actually fly
Start with the airports and routes you use, not a headline ranking of airlines. Check which carriers serve those routes, which partners can earn or redeem in the program, and whether the award seats you want are available. A partner flight may follow different earning rules from a flight sold by the airline, and partner award inventory and mileage requirements can vary. American Airlines’ award information notes those differences.
Before concentrating your earnings in one account, compare programs on your own likely trips: fare eligibility, partner access, award pricing, and fees. There is no single best program for every traveler or route.
2. Check how your exact fare earns before booking
Do not assume that every paid ticket earns miles or that miles always track distance. Earning can depend on fare class, ticket price, booking code, and whether the flight is marketed or operated by a partner.

- American Airlines: many eligible tickets earn based on ticket price, while some partner flights or fare types use distance and booking code. Its earning rules explain the distinctions.
- Delta: eligible Delta fares and partner-marketed flights can have different rules; the SkyMiles earning rules reviewed list Main Basic as ineligible for miles.
Check the fare’s terms and the program’s current rules before purchase. A low fare that earns no miles may still be the better cash choice; the miles you forgo are only one part of the comparison.
3. Put the right loyalty number on the reservation
A flight generally credits to one frequent-flyer program at a time, so choose the account before you travel. American’s partner-earning FAQ says a trip can earn in only one loyalty program. Credit it where the miles are most useful for your likely redemptions, rather than splitting attention across balances you may not use.
Keep the itinerary, ticket receipt, and boarding pass until the eligible credit appears. If it does not post, those records can help you make a missing-credit request under the program’s rules.

4. Earn through partners only when the purchase makes sense
Some programs offer miles through non-flight partners. American lists hotel, car-rental, and shopping partners as earning channels in its AAdvantage earning FAQ. Eligibility and offers are program-specific, so check the terms for the particular partner and transaction.

Do not spend extra solely to earn points: an offer is worthwhile only if the purchase itself fits your needs and the added rewards justify any difference in cost.
5. Find award space before transferring flexible points
Search the exact dates, route, cabin, and number of seats you need before moving bank or card points to an airline. Look at partner options if your program permits them, but confirm the precise itinerary and mileage requirement. American warns that partner award availability may be limited and mileage requirements can vary in its award information.

A search result is not a booking: verify that the seats are still available and that you can complete the reservation before taking any action that moves points. Award inventory and prices can change.

Make an apples-to-apples comparison: same route, dates, passenger count, and cabin. Put the cash fare beside the award’s required points plus taxes, fees, and any applicable surcharges. Then compare the ticket conditions, especially change, cancellation, and redeposit rules.

Delta’s award-ticket fee terms include restrictions and possible charges for redeposit or reissue. Check the terms that apply to your specific ticket rather than assuming an award is free to change or cancel.

7. Transfer points only after checking the ratio and booking path
Flexible credit-card points can sometimes transfer to airline programs, but eligible partners, conversion ratios, processing times, and reversibility depend on the issuer and country. Confirm the current terms with the issuer and the airline, and make sure the award is bookable before transferring. A transfer may not be reversible if plans change or the seats disappear.
In a July 28, 2026 article, Kiplinger quoted Nick Ewen, editor-in-chief at The Points Guy, advising: “Keep in mind that these transfers are irreversible.” Kiplinger’s coverage of credit-card transfers also notes that ratios differ. Treat a transfer as a one-way commitment unless your issuer’s terms explicitly say otherwise.
