Retailers can make a store more distinctive without a major renovation or a large marketing budget. Start with ideas that suit your products and customers, then try a small version and track a practical signal—such as event attendance, repeat visits, product questions, pickup orders, or sales of a featured item.
1. Make your brand story visible
Give customers a clear reason to remember your store. Decide what it stands for—local makers, expert advice, low-waste essentials, a particular hobby—and show that point of view in the products you choose, the way you describe them, and the details shoppers encounter in store.
The National Retail Federation’s small-retailer guidance links a clear point of view to assortment, messaging, and hiring. It also recommends evaluating products using sales, markdown cost, and customer feedback.
- Lean version: Build one small display around a consistent theme, with a short sign explaining why the items belong together.
- Evaluate it: Compare sales and markdowns for the featured products and note customer questions or comments. Use what you learn to refine the theme or assortment.
2. Create a visual focal point
Use lighting, props, and concise signage to draw attention to a new arrival, seasonal item, or product you want shoppers to understand. A focal display gives people an easy place to start browsing, especially when the store carries a wide range of products.

The NRF suggests testing whether placing some bestsellers toward the rear encourages shoppers to pass through more of the store. Treat that as a layout experiment, not a universal rule: it may not suit every floor plan, customer need, or product category.
- Lean version: Refresh one existing table or shelf with a simple theme and a sign that answers a customer question.
- Evaluate it: Observe whether shoppers stop, handle the products, or ask about them, and compare featured-item sales before and after the change. Keep safety, accessibility, and clear routes through the store intact.
3. Turn staff knowledge into an experience
Help employees explain what distinguishes a product, who it suits, and how to choose among options. Useful, personal guidance can make a small retailer feel more memorable than a store where shoppers are left to work everything out alone.
In Square’s 2026 report, 56% of surveyed U.S. consumers said staff expertise makes a local business memorable. Square and Studio by Informa TechTarget surveyed 994 U.S. consumers from September 23 through December 30, 2025. The finding reflects respondents’ answers, not a guarantee that training will produce the same result for every store. Read Square’s report and methodology.

4. Host a repeatable workshop or demonstration
Connect an event to what you sell: a product-care demonstration, tasting, beginner class, or masterclass can give customers a reason to visit and help them use a product with confidence. Choose a format that can be run again, rather than investing in a one-off spectacle that is hard to sustain.

Arpan Podduturi, Shopify’s Director of Product, advises: “The best kind of experiential retail are the experiences that are repeatable—not one-off gimmicks, where you take an Instagram selfie and call it a day.”
- Lean version: Run a short demonstration during normal opening hours, using products already in stock and limiting attendance to what staff can comfortably support.
- Evaluate it: Track sign-ups, attendance, questions, and any event-related sales. Repeat the format if customers find it useful and the workload is manageable.
5. Partner with a neighboring business
Find a nearby business that serves a compatible audience without selling the same thing. You could coordinate a small event, cross-promote each other’s offerings, or host a temporary pop-up. Agree in advance on costs, responsibilities, promotion, and how you will judge whether the collaboration was worthwhile.

These examples show possible formats; they do not establish that every partnership increases sales. Square’s report
- Lean version: Exchange a small number of flyers or social posts with one nearby business and offer a simple shared activity.
- Evaluate it: Ask customers how they heard about the event, track participation, and compare the effort and costs with the benefit to each partner.
6. Make loyalty and customer messages useful
A loyalty offer or occasional email or text can give customers a practical reason to return—such as event details, a relevant new arrival, or helpful product information. Keep messages tied to customer interests and respect applicable consent and messaging rules; frequent, generic promotions can become noise.

Square’s 2026 report says 90% of local businesses using a marketing tool in 2025 maintained regular customers, compared with 38% of businesses that did not use one. Square defines the tools in this comparison as email marketing, U.S. text-message marketing, and loyalty programs, and compares seller activity around activation. This is a reported association, not proof that a tool alone caused customer retention. See Square’s methodology and findings.

The National Retail Federation has also noted that loyalty experiences can help retailers collect customer signals for personalization. Brendan Witcher, principal analyst at Forrester Research, said at NRF 2024: Retail’s Big Show, “A lot of time, I talk about the idea that creating better, personalized experiences … that’s really just the engine,” in NRF’s coverage of retail customer data.
- Lean version: Start with one clear offer or a low-frequency update customers can opt into; do not add a platform until you know what you need it to do.
- Evaluate it: Watch repeat purchases, offer redemptions, unsubscribes, and customer feedback. Use those signals to adjust the offer and message frequency.
7. Connect online discovery to store convenience
Make essential store information easy to find online, including hours, location, contact details, and—where you can maintain it accurately—product availability. For customers who prefer to order first, consider buy online, pick up in store, curbside pickup, or local delivery if your inventory and staffing can support the option.
Shopify’s local-marketing guide describes these fulfillment options. Square’s 2026 U.S. consumer survey reports that respondents viewed pickup or delivery and mobile payment options as ways digital tools could make them more likely to frequent a local business; this is survey feedback, not a universal customer preference. - Lean version: Keep your online hours and contact details current, and offer one pickup method only if staff can reliably prepare and hand off orders.
- Evaluate it: Track pickup or delivery orders, missed handoffs, customer questions, and the time staff spend fulfilling them. Expand only if the added convenience is workable for both customers and the business.
How to choose what to try first
Pick the idea that addresses a real customer need and can be tested with your available money, time, and staff. A simple trial is more useful than launching several changes at once: set a start and end date, note the effort and cost, and choose one or two relevant outcomes to observe.
- Small budget, limited staff: Start with a themed display, a concise staff product guide, or clearer online store information.
- Strong local relationships: Try a shared promotion or a small recurring event with a nearby partner.
- Existing repeat customers: Test a useful loyalty offer or customer update, then pay attention to engagement as well as opt-outs.
- Convenience is a barrier: Check whether accurate availability information or a simple pickup option is feasible before adding delivery or more complex systems.
Across all seven ideas, the useful test is whether customers respond in a way that matters to your business and whether the approach is practical to keep doing. Adjust or stop an idea if the cost, staff time, or customer experience does not justify continuing it.
