The available recognition is a mix of reader voting, editorial finalist selections, and a North Carolina retirement-community designation, rather than an apples-to-apples comparison of costs or services. Use the towns below to focus your search, then verify housing, healthcare, taxes, insurance, and daily transportation for your own circumstances.
Seven Blue Ridge towns to consider
The towns span North Carolina and Virginia and offer different starting points for evaluating mountain life. Recognition can help identify places to explore, but it does not establish that a town is affordable, medically convenient, or the right fit for a particular retiree.
Hendersonville, North Carolina
Hendersonville topped Blue Ridge Country’s 2023 retirement-town reader vote and was also recognized for its downtown. That is a publisher’s award result, not a measured ranking of retirement costs, healthcare, or quality of life. Blue Ridge Country’s 2023 list is best read as a reason to put Hendersonville on a visit itinerary, then assess the neighborhoods and services that matter to you.
Brevard, North Carolina
Brevard placed second in the same 2023 reader vote. The source also points to outdoor recreation in the wider Transylvania County area, which may appeal to people who want nature close by. It does not provide comparable housing or healthcare metrics for Brevard, so check those directly before treating the town as a practical fit. See the 2023 selections.
#1 Best Overall
Roanoke, Virginia
Roanoke appeared among Blue Ridge Country’s 2023 retirement-town selections. City information highlights downtown housing, restaurants, music and performing-arts venues, as well as outdoor activities. Regional relocation resources also point prospective residents toward healthcare and property information. The regional cost-of-living description is promotional and does not supply a comparable figure for Roanoke itself. Blue Ridge Country’s list, Roanoke city information, and Virginia’s Blue Ridge resources can help you begin a local review.
Boone, North Carolina
Boone was included in the 2023 reader-vote selections and named a finalist in Blue Ridge Country’s 2026 mountain-town feature. That 2026 coverage calls out shops, cultural venues, and a self-guided historic walk—useful clues for assessing what everyday and weekend life might include. These features do not substitute for checking housing, healthcare access, or the convenience of getting around. Read the 2023 selections and the 2026 finalist coverage.
Rank #2
Waynesville, North Carolina
Waynesville appears among Blue Ridge Country’s mountain-town finalists, and the town’s official page emphasizes proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. That setting is a clear draw for recreation, but proximity on a map does not tell you how convenient specific trips will be from a home you are considering. Blue Ridge Country’s finalist coverage and the Town of Waynesville’s overview provide starting context.
Black Mountain, North Carolina
Black Mountain is included in Blue Ridge Country’s 2026 finalist coverage. Treat that recognition as a prompt to investigate, not as evidence about local housing costs, medical access, or transportation. For a realistic comparison, look up current neighborhood-level costs and identify the facilities and services you would actually use. See the 2026 coverage.
Rank #3
Lenoir, North Carolina
Retire NC’s mountain-region guide describes Lenoir as the only mountain city designated a Certified Retirement Community and highlights greenways, outdoor access, housing options, arts, and nearby regional healthcare. The guide’s positive descriptions of affordability and amenities are not an independent comparison with the other towns on this list. Read the mountain-region guide.
How to compare the towns before choosing
Use the same questions for each place, rather than relying on a town’s reputation or a regional cost-of-living claim. Current, comparable town-level figures for home costs, taxes, insurance, and healthcare capacity are not established for this shortlist.
Rank #4
- Housing and carrying costs: Check current listings and local property information for the neighborhoods you would consider. Include taxes, homeowners insurance, maintenance, and any other recurring costs in your own budget.
- Healthcare: Map primary-care, specialist, hospital, and emergency-care options from likely neighborhoods. Ask providers about availability and whether they accept your insurance; a regional reference to healthcare does not establish that a particular service is accessible to you.
- Everyday access: Test the routes to groceries, pharmacies, banking, and other regular errands. Consider whether you can comfortably manage them on foot, by car, or with available transportation.
- Community and culture: Look beyond visitor attractions. Check what activities, arts, music, groups, and services operate year-round and whether their schedules and locations suit you.
- Outdoor access: Identify specific trails, greenways, parks, or Parkway access points you would use, and consider the actual drive from the homes you are evaluating.
- Roads and weather: Mountain terrain can mean steep or winding routes and changing conditions. Blue Ridge Country cautions that “the mountains bring winding roads and unpredictable weather.” Drive candidate routes in different conditions when possible, and consider how seasonal weather could affect routine trips. Blue Ridge Country’s Mountains Region guide also notes the Parkway’s access to scenic views, hiking trails, and picnic spots.
What the retirement designation does—and does not—tell you
North Carolina’s Certified Retirement Community program is one documented signal for Lenoir. The regional guide says participating localities establish healthcare, infrastructure, and social networks for older residents. The designation is not a guarantee of a particular medical service, appointment availability, or individual outcome. Confirm the services you need with local providers and agencies. Learn about the designation.
How to use town awards and finalist lists
Recognition can narrow a broad search, but the lists cited here measure different things. Hendersonville, Brevard, Roanoke, and Boone were among the places selected by Blue Ridge Country readers in 2023; Boone, Waynesville, and Black Mountain appear in its 2026 mountain-town finalist material; Lenoir is highlighted by a regional retirement guide for a program designation. None of these sources supplies a uniform scorecard across all seven towns.
Blue Ridge Country says its 2026 happiest-town selection began with just under 100 cities and towns and used screening criteria including a cost-of-living index no higher than 110 (with 100 as average), a commute under 30 minutes, and crime under 600 per 100,000. Those were the publisher’s selection criteria, not current measurements for each town in this retirement shortlist. Read the 2026 feature.
