If you want a used Toyota RAV4 with a strong case for reliability and good mileage, consider model years 2015 through 2020—especially 2018 as a reliability-focused candidate. No model year guarantees a trouble-free vehicle, though: condition, service history, mileage, trim, powertrain, and completed recalls matter more than the year alone.
Which used RAV4 years are worth considering?
A useful shortlist is 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. The evidence behind those years comes from two different kinds of recommendations, not one definitive ranking.

The IIHS/Consumer Reports lists and Autoblog’s pick answer different questions: one is a safety-and-reliability recommendation, while the other focuses on reliability indicators. Neither establishes a universal best year for every buyer. The IIHS and Consumer Reports recommendations, published May 22, 2024, also cite historical average U.S. values supplied by Kelley Blue Book as of April 19, 2024: $12,000 for the 2015–2016 Good Choice entry and $14,700 for the earliest eligible vehicle on the 2017-or-newer Best Choices list. These are not current asking prices.
Why is 2018 a particularly supported candidate?
Autoblog names the 2018 RAV4 its reliability pick based on complaint severity and total complaint and recall counts. It reports 33 issues logged on Car Complaints, three NHTSA recalls, and a J.D. Power quality and reliability rating of 88/100. The rating year is not specified in the article, and these figures are not a prediction of how an individual used RAV4 will perform. Which recalls should you check before buying?
2019–2020: campaigns affecting certain vehicles
Toyota’s January 28, 2021 technician campaign requirements document lists certain RAV4s and RAV4 hybrids for campaigns involving potential front lower suspension-arm separation, possible loss of power steering assist, and certain engine blocks that could result in engine failure, stalling, or fire risk. These are campaign descriptions, not claims that every RAV4 from 2019 or 2020 is affected. Toyota’s campaign requirements document includes the phrase “Potential Loss of Vehicle Control due to Front Lower Suspension Arm Separation.”
2013–2018: battery-related recall affecting certain vehicles
In 2023, the Associated Press reported Toyota’s recall of nearly 1.9 million U.S. RAV4s across certain 2013–2018 model years. The concern was that some replacement 12-volt batteries could move during forceful turns and short circuit. The reported dealer remedy included a new hold-down clamp, battery tray, and terminal cover. Confirm whether the specific vehicle is included and whether the remedy was completed; the model-year range alone does not establish that a car is affected. Read the Associated Press report.

How to assess an individual RAV4 listing
Use the model-year shortlist to narrow the search, then judge the actual vehicle and its likely total cost. Before making an offer:
- Check recall status by VIN. Use the NHTSA recall lookup, then ask for documentation of completed repairs. If a campaign or repair history is unclear, contact a Toyota dealer with the VIN.
- Review maintenance and ownership records. Look for service documentation, mileage consistency, accident and repair history, and signs of neglected maintenance.
- Confirm the exact configuration. Compare trim, engine, hybrid status, drivetrain, and equipment. A recommendation for a model year does not mean every configuration has the same features or maintenance needs.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the vehicle’s mechanical condition and wear items, including tires and brakes, and to note any immediate work needed.
- Calculate ownership cost with current, local figures. Compare the asking price with your local market, request an insurance quote for the exact vehicle, and account for needed maintenance or repairs. The 2024 KBB averages above are historical reference points, not a present-day valuation.
These checks matter because year-level lists cannot tell you whether a specific RAV4 has been maintained, damaged, or repaired properly. No listing can be judged on its model year alone.
