The Toyota Corolla is the best default choice if your priority is predictable, low-cost ownership. The Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, and Mazda3 round out the strongest mainstream options for U.S. used-car shoppers who want inexpensive service, plentiful parts, and a good reliability record.

“Dirt cheap maintenance” does not mean maintenance-free. It means lower expected maintenance and repair costs than comparable vehicles. A neglected Corolla can cost more than a carefully maintained Mazda3, while a high-mileage Prius deserves a hybrid-system inspection before you buy. The individual car’s condition, service history, rust, accident record, mileage, and powertrain matter more than the badge on the hood.

The five best low-maintenance used cars at a glance

Model RepairPal annual average CarEdge 10-year estimate Best for Main caveat
Toyota Corolla $362 $4,434 Lowest-risk mainstream ownership Used prices can be high; inspect CVT service and rust
Toyota Prius $408 $4,359 Fuel savings Hybrid battery and system inspection is essential
Toyota Camry $388 $4,580 More passenger and trunk space Fleet use, V6 costs, transmission, and suspension wear
Honda Civic $368 $5,632 Practicality with better driving enjoyment Different generations and powertrains vary substantially
Mazda3 $433 About $5,700 Driving enjoyment and interior quality Smaller rear seat and somewhat higher service average

RepairPal figures are average annual repair and maintenance costs across model years. CarEdge estimates include scheduled maintenance, normal wear items, and expected repairs over the first 10 years of a vehicle’s life, not fuel, insurance, registration, financing, depreciation, or collision damage. The figures are national estimates, not quotes for a particular car. See the RepairPal Corolla data and the CarEdge Corolla estimate for methodology and updates.

How to interpret “cheap to maintain”

Routine service is only one part of ownership cost. A car may have inexpensive oil changes but still become costly if it has a failing transmission, severe rust, air-conditioning problem, hybrid battery issue, turbocharger failure, or expensive electronic fault.

TLGREEN 95-Piece Car Tool Kit with Storage Case, Red
  • The tools are heat-treated with carbon steel and placed in a suitable box, compact carrying case for storage and portability.
  • This 95 piece kit contains the basic tools needed for daily use and can be used for most small repairs around the house. It can be used to repair leaking kitchen or bathroom faucets, repair bicycles, or DIY.
  • Include utility knife, water pump plier, screwdrivers, diagonal cutting plier, combination wrenches, ratchet handle, level, bits, hex key wrenches, spark plug socket, drive Adaptor, drive extension bar, bit driver handle, adjustable wrench, ong nose plier, drive-sockets.
  • As a good choice for you, it is suitable for craftsmen, construction workers and mechanics.

For this article, the best candidates combine:

  • A naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine or a mature hybrid system
  • A non-performance-oriented powertrain
  • Large U.S. sales volume and readily available aftermarket, dealer, and salvage parts
  • Independent repair shops that know the platform
  • A long-running engine and transmission design with extensive repair experience
  • Reasonable service intervals without frequent high-cost procedures
  • Good fuel economy and relatively strong resale demand
  • Body and underbody condition appropriate for the buyer’s climate

“Japanese brand” alone is not enough. Model year, engine, transmission, mileage, previous use, accident history, rust, and maintenance records are more useful buying criteria than a country-of-origin label.

Maintenance, wear, repairs, and total ownership cost are different

  • Scheduled maintenance: Oil, filters, fluids, spark plugs, coolant, brake fluid, tire rotations, and inspections.
  • Wear items: Tires, brake pads, rotors, batteries, belts, wiper blades, shocks, struts, and suspension bushings.
  • Unscheduled repairs: Failures that are not part of the normal service schedule.
  • Total ownership cost: Maintenance and repairs plus fuel, insurance, registration, taxes, financing, depreciation, and sometimes tires.

RepairPal’s model averages include many different years and focus on repair and maintenance experience. CarEdge estimates the expected cost curve for a vehicle beginning life new. Neither number precisely predicts the expense of buying a neglected 100,000-mile car. Labor rates also vary substantially by state, city, dealership, and independent shop. CarEdge defines a major repair as one costing more than $500 including parts and labor, but its probability figures are not a guarantee that a particular car will or will not fail.

1. Toyota Corolla: the safest default answer

Best for: Buyers who want the simplest, most broadly supported low-cost commuter.

The Corolla is the strongest all-around recommendation because it combines a low repair-cost average, excellent parts availability, good fuel economy, widespread independent-shop expertise, and a large supply of used examples. RepairPal gives it a 4.5 out of 5 reliability rating, ranks it first among 36 compact cars, reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $362, and gives it a 7% probability of a repair being classified as severe. CarEdge estimates approximately $4,434 in maintenance and repairs during the first 10 years.

Those figures make the Corolla a more defensible first choice than the Lexus IS that appears in some shorter lists of inexpensive used cars. The IS is affordable for a luxury sedan, but it is not cheaper than the Corolla in absolute terms.

Target years: Approximately 2015–2022, with a clean, documented example taking priority over a particular model year. The 2014–2019 generation is especially attractive to budget shoppers because it is common, mechanically familiar, and supported by abundant parts and repair knowledge.

Best configuration:

  • Four-cylinder engine
  • Regular sedan or hatchback rather than a performance-oriented version
  • Front-wheel drive
  • Documented oil service and correct transmission-fluid service

What to inspect on a Corolla

  • Evidence that the CVT, where fitted, received the correct fluid at the specified interval
  • Oil consumption or leaks on high-mileage examples
  • Underbody, brake-line, subframe, and suspension rust in salt-belt states
  • Uneven tire wear that may indicate an alignment or suspension problem
  • Signs of rental, fleet, or rideshare use
  • Accident repairs hidden by fresh paint, replacement panels, or mismatched gaps
  • Open recalls checked by VIN rather than by model name alone

Who should avoid it: Buyers who need a larger cabin, regularly carry adults in the rear seat, or strongly value responsive handling. A Corolla can be dull to drive and used examples often command a premium because of their reputation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Toyota Prius: the fuel-saving choice

Best for: Drivers who want the lowest fuel consumption and are willing to have the hybrid system checked before purchase.

The Prius can be unusually inexpensive to operate because of excellent fuel economy and regenerative braking, which can reduce friction-brake wear. Toyota’s hybrid system has also been in production for many years, giving independent technicians and parts suppliers extensive experience.

RepairPal gives the Prius a 4.0 out of 5 reliability rating, reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $408, and lists an 11% probability of a severe repair. CarEdge estimates approximately $4,359 in maintenance and repairs over the first 10 years.

High-mileage Prius cars are common because they have been used for taxis and rideshare work. That demonstrates that many can accumulate substantial mileage, but it is not automatically a benefit. Former commercial-use cars may have heavy interior wear, curb damage, frequent idling, more stop-and-go operation, and deferred maintenance.

  • Wide application: This socket wrench set is perfect for home improvement, carpentry tools, construction, auto repair, woodwork, and other DIY projects. This tool makes for a beautiful unique gift for men on various occasions like Father's Day, Birthday or anniversary.

Target years: Approximately 2017–2022. A 2016 can still be considered, but early-build and high-mileage examples deserve additional scrutiny.

Best configuration:

  • Standard Prius hatchback
  • Front-wheel drive
  • Non-plug-in version if a lower purchase price and simpler ownership are more important than electric-only driving
  • No hybrid warning lights and documented service history

Prius-specific risks

  • Traction battery: Age and use can cause deterioration or failure. Do not rely on a seller’s promise that the battery will last a particular number of miles.
  • Battery cooling: Dust, pet hair, and debris can restrict the battery-cooling fan or passages.
  • Brake system: The electronically controlled brake actuator and related components can be expensive.
  • Inverter and hybrid controls: Warning lights or stored hybrid-system codes require professional diagnosis.
  • Other age-related work: The 12-volt battery, suspension, air conditioning, coolant system, and exhaust components still wear like they do on conventional cars.

Before buying an older or unusually cheap Prius, pay for a hybrid-system scan or inspection by a qualified Toyota hybrid technician. Ask for a traction-battery health report, inspect the cooling fan, verify normal regenerative and friction-brake operation, and check the 12-volt battery.

Also run the vehicle identification number through NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA’s VIN search identifies unrepaired recalls on a specific vehicle, and recall remedies are generally completed free by the manufacturer’s dealer.

Who should avoid it: Buyers who cannot budget for a hybrid inspection or who are purchasing solely because the asking price is unusually low. The fuel savings do not eliminate the possibility of a large hybrid-system repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Toyota Camry: the low-cost choice for more space

Best for: Families and commuters who need more interior and trunk space than a Corolla, Civic, or Mazda3 provides.

The Camry offers a roomier cabin without giving up the broad repair support and long-term reputation that make Toyota’s compact sedans attractive. RepairPal ranks it third among 24 midsize cars, reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $388, approximately 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year, and an 11% probability of a severe repair. CarEdge estimates approximately $4,580 in maintenance and repairs during the first 10 years.

Target years: Approximately 2015–2023. Four-cylinder cars are the cleanest fit for a low-cost-maintenance brief. Camry hybrids are worth considering, but they need the same separate hybrid-battery and hybrid-system inspection as a Prius.

Best configuration:

  • Four-cylinder engine
  • Front-wheel drive
  • LE or SE trim rather than a sport-oriented or V6 model
  • Complete service records, including fluids and cooling-system maintenance

What to inspect on a Camry

  • Automatic-transmission hesitation, harsh shifting, delayed engagement, or abnormal noises
  • Oil leaks and evidence of cooling-system neglect
  • Air-conditioning performance at idle and during a road test
  • Struts, control-arm bushings, wheel bearings, and engine mounts on high-mileage cars
  • Uneven tire wear and brake vibration
  • Signs of taxi, fleet, rental, or rideshare use
  • Higher fuel, tire, and insurance costs on V6 or sport-oriented versions

RepairPal lists automatic-transmission hesitation and oxygen-sensor failures among reported Camry problems. Treat those database reports as inspection prompts, not proof that every Camry has the same defect.

Who should avoid it: Buyers who do not need its extra space and would rather spend less on fuel, tires, and purchase price. A four-cylinder Camry is inexpensive for a midsize sedan, but it is not necessarily cheaper to run than a Corolla.

4. Honda Civic: the all-around compact alternative

Best for: Buyers who want low ownership costs, strong parts availability, and more engaging driving dynamics than the typical economy sedan.

The Civic has a large U.S. owner base, good fuel economy, strong resale value, and broad independent-repair support. RepairPal reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $368. CarEdge estimates approximately $5,632 over the first 10 years and a 16.08% probability of a major repair under its methodology.

Best configuration:

  • Naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder where available
  • Regular sedan or hatchback, depending on cargo needs
  • Non-Si and non-Type R trim
  • Documented Honda Maintenance Minder service
  • Verified VIN recall history

Understanding Honda Maintenance Minder codes

Honda does not use one universal mileage chart for every Civic. Its Maintenance Minder system displays codes, and the exact intervals vary by model year, engine, transmission, and driving conditions. In Honda’s 2022 Civic reference material:

  • A: Replace engine oil
  • B: Replace oil and filter; inspect brakes, steering, suspension, driveshaft boots, fluids, exhaust, and fuel lines
  • 1: Rotate tires
  • 2: Replace the air cleaner and cabin filter and inspect the drive belt
  • 3: Replace transmission fluid
  • 4: Replace spark plugs and inspect valve clearance
  • 5: Replace engine coolant
  • 7: Replace brake fluid

Honda says oil should be changed annually if a Maintenance Minder message does not appear within 12 months. It also specifies more frequent transmission-fluid service under certain mountain-driving conditions. Retrieve the guide for the exact model year and VIN rather than applying the 2022 schedule to every Civic. Honda’s reference guide is available through Honda Owners.

Civic recalls and inspection points

Certain 2016–2021 Civics were included in a fuel-pump-motor safety recall because defective impellers could swell and cause the fuel pump to fail. Certain 2019–2020 Civics were also included in related fuel-pump campaigns. Newer cars have had other recalls, including steering-related campaigns. Verify the specific VIN using NHTSA rather than assuming a recall applies to every Civic or that every car has been repaired. The relevant Honda bulletin is available here.

During a pre-purchase inspection, check the air-conditioning system, CVT behavior where applicable, turbocharger plumbing on turbocharged versions, oil leaks, suspension noise, and evidence of collision repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should avoid it: Buyers who want the simplest possible configuration but are considering a turbocharged, modified, Si, or Type R car. Those versions can be reliable when maintained, but performance hardware and previous aggressive driving add potential cost.

5. Mazda3: the best choice for driving enjoyment

Best for: Buyers who want reasonable repair costs without accepting the detached driving feel of some economy cars.

The Mazda3 is not the lowest-cost model in every dataset, but it is the strongest choice here for handling, interior quality, and driver appeal. RepairPal gives it a 4.0 out of 5 reliability rating, ranks it ninth among 36 compact cars, and reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $433, compared with $526 for compact cars overall. Its reported probability of a severe repair is 10%.

Target years: Approximately 2017–2018 for a mature third-generation car, or a carefully inspected 2019–2021 example for buyers who want newer equipment and styling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best configuration:

  • Naturally aspirated 2.0- or 2.5-liter engine
  • Six-speed automatic or manual transmission
  • Sedan or hatchback based on cargo requirements
  • Non-turbo trim if minimizing repair exposure is the primary objective

Consumer Reports describes the 2014–2018 Mazda3 generation as having efficient engines, smooth transmissions, strong handling, and a modern interior, while also noting its relatively tight rear seating. The 2017 update added equipment and other improvements. See the Consumer Reports Mazda3 model history for generation context.

Mazda3 maintenance details

For a 2018 Mazda3, Mazda specifies engine oil and filter service when the maintenance indicator activates, but no later than 12 months or 7,500 miles. The schedule calls for:

  • Spark-plug replacement every 75,000 miles
  • Tire rotation at oil-service intervals, no later than 7,500 miles
  • Cabin-air-filter replacement at equivalent oil-service timing, with a maximum of 24 months or 30,000 miles

Mazda lists shorter or more frequent service considerations for repeated short trips, dusty conditions, heavy braking, salt exposure, rough roads, prolonged idling, extreme temperatures, and continuous mountain driving. These figures come from the 2018 Mazda3 scheduled-maintenance guide and should not automatically be applied to every model year.

Mazda3 recalls and inspection points

Certain 2014–2016 Mazda3 vehicles had fuel-tank welding recalls. Certain 2014–2018 five-door hatchbacks had a rearview-camera wiring recall that could cause the image to distort or flicker. The hatchback distinction matters: do not assume the same campaign applies to every Mazda3 sedan. Check the VIN and repair status through NHTSA. Mazda’s documents describing the camera issue are available here, and the fuel-tank recall information is here.

Inspect for infotainment glitches, suspension noise, rust, worn interior components, water intrusion, uneven tire wear, and accident repairs. Mazda3 examples with larger wheels may also cost more for replacement tires than base Corollas.

Who should avoid it: Buyers who need generous rear-seat space, want the lowest possible repair average, or are considering a turbocharged and heavily modified example without complete records.

The Lexus IS exception: inexpensive luxury, not the cheapest ownership

The Lexus IS is a reasonable alternative if luxury matters, but it should not replace the Corolla on a list of the five cheapest mainstream cars to maintain.

RepairPal reports an average annual repair cost of approximately $428 for the IS 300 and $543 for the IS 350. CarEdge estimates approximately $5,782 in maintenance and repairs over 10 years for the IS and about $5,891 for the IS 350. Those numbers compare favorably with many German luxury sedans, but they are higher than the Corolla, Prius, and Camry estimates in this group. See the RepairPal IS 300 data and CarEdge’s IS estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The IS can also cost more through:

  • Premium tires and larger wheels
  • More expensive brakes
  • Higher insurance premiums
  • Premium-fuel requirements or recommendations depending on engine
  • More electronic equipment
  • AWD components
  • Higher cosmetic and interior repair costs

If you choose one, favor a stock, unmodified example with conservative wheels and complete service records. Do not include the IS F, a heavily modified car, or an aggressively driven example in a low-maintenance shortlist.

Used-car inspection checklist: how to reject a bad example

Reliability statistics help identify candidates. They do not make a neglected vehicle a good purchase. Before paying a deposit, complete these checks:

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA. Confirm that every safety recall is closed. Unrepaired recall work is generally performed free at the manufacturer’s dealer. Use the NHTSA recall lookup.
  2. Review the title and history. Avoid salvage, flood, fire, or unexplained title branding. A clean title is not proof that a car was never damaged, but a branded title raises the risk and should be priced accordingly.
  3. Demand service evidence. Look for invoices, dealer records, inspection reports, and proof of the correct oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and brake-fluid intervals. A seller’s statement that the car was “always maintained” is not a record.
  4. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Use a shop that is not connected to the seller. For a Prius, use a technician who can inspect Toyota hybrid systems.
  5. Start it cold. Ask the seller not to warm the vehicle before arrival. Listen for rattles, excessive cranking, smoke, rough idle, warning lights, or abnormal hybrid start-up behavior.
  6. Scan all modules. A basic engine-code scan is not enough. A professional scan can identify transmission, airbag, ABS, body, ADAS, and hybrid-system codes. Check whether monitors were recently reset.
  7. Test the transmission carefully. Look for shuddering, delayed engagement, slipping, whining, harsh shifts, or abnormal engine speed. For CVTs, confirm the correct fluid and documented service instead of assuming all CVTs are unreliable or maintenance-free.
  8. Inspect the underside. Pay particular attention to subframes, brake and fuel lines, suspension mounting points, rocker panels, wheel arches, exhaust components, and underbody fasteners.
  9. Check tires and alignment. Matching tires with even tread wear are preferable. Uneven wear can reveal neglected alignment, bent suspension, or accident damage.
  10. Test the air conditioner. It should cool properly at idle and while driving. Air-conditioning failures can be expensive even on otherwise reliable models.
  11. Look for leaks and neglected fluids. Inspect the engine, transmission, coolant system, brake components, and underbody after the road test.
  12. Check use history. Look for clues of smoking, flooding, rental or taxi service, rideshare use, commercial loading, excessive idling, and severe curb or parking damage.

High mileage is not an automatic rejection

A well-documented high-mileage car can be a better purchase than a low-mileage vehicle that was neglected, flooded, crashed, or stored improperly. At roughly 120,000 miles and beyond, however, budget for age-related work even on a Corolla, Prius, Camry, Civic, or Mazda3:

  • Struts, shocks, control-arm bushings, and engine mounts
  • Wheel bearings and brake calipers
  • Alternator or starter on conventional vehicles
  • 12-volt battery
  • Air-conditioning components
  • Cooling-system hoses, radiator, and other age-related parts
  • Exhaust and catalytic-converter issues
  • Sensors and electronic modules
  • Rust-related repairs

Low annual averages do not mean you will never receive a $1,000 repair estimate. Keep a cash reserve after purchase, particularly if the vehicle is old, high-mileage, or missing records.

Important powertrain cautions

CVT-equipped cars

Some Corollas and many Civics use continuously variable transmissions. The right conclusion is not that every CVT is unreliable or that every CVT requires no maintenance. Confirm the exact transmission and service schedule for the model year, verify that the correct fluid was used, and watch for shuddering, delayed engagement, whining, slipping, warning lights, or abnormal RPM behavior.

Turbocharged engines

Turbocharged Civic and Mazda3 variants can be dependable when properly maintained, but the turbocharger, associated plumbing, cooling, and oiling systems add components and potential failure modes. For the lowest-cost ownership brief, naturally aspirated versions are preferable unless performance is more important to you.

Hybrids

A Prius or Camry Hybrid can have low routine-service costs for years, but the buyer must separately check traction-battery health, the battery cooling fan and passages, hybrid diagnostic codes, inverter coolant service, braking operation, the 12-volt battery, and any applicable warranty or state-specific battery coverage. A hybrid’s low purchase price is not automatically a bargain.

Climate, tires, and insurance can change the ranking

Road salt in the Northeast and Great Lakes can turn an otherwise inexpensive car into a costly project. Coastal air, heat, UV exposure, flood risk, and neglected cooling systems create different problems in other regions. Inspect the actual car rather than assuming a Southern or Western vehicle is automatically superior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, maintenance and repair averages are not total ownership rankings. A Lexus IS may have reasonable mechanical repair statistics but higher insurance, fuel, brake, tire, and cosmetic costs. A Prius may save substantially on fuel but have different insurance rates depending on location. A Mazda3 with large wheels can cost more to outfit with tires than a base Corolla.

Other used cars worth considering

These models can be sensible alternatives but do not displace the five primary recommendations under the same criteria:

  • Honda Fit: Excellent packaging and generally affordable service, but it was discontinued in the U.S. after 2020 and can be expensive for its size. Available RepairPal material does not provide a directly comparable model-specific annual figure, so a precise cost claim should not be assumed.
  • Toyota Yaris: Simple and economical, but less common and sometimes overpriced relative to a Corolla.
  • Toyota Prius c: Efficient and mechanically credible, but smaller and older than most standard Prius examples.
  • Honda Accord: A good larger-car alternative, although the Camry is a cleaner fit for this article’s lowest-cost theme.
  • Toyota RAV4: A practical choice for buyers who require an SUV, but used prices, tires, brakes, and AWD components can increase ownership costs.
  • Lexus ES: A comfort-oriented luxury alternative that may suit buyers better than the IS, but it still requires a separate assessment of luxury-car purchase and ownership costs.
  • Mitsubishi Mirage: Often inexpensive to buy and simple to service, but safety, refinement, highway comfort, performance, and long-term buyer appeal require separate consideration.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy the Toyota Corolla if minimizing repair risk and finding parts anywhere are your top priorities.
  • Buy the Toyota Prius if fuel economy matters most and a qualified technician confirms the hybrid system is healthy.
  • Buy the Toyota Camry if you need more rear-seat and trunk space without moving into a costly luxury sedan.
  • Buy the Honda Civic if you want an efficient compact with more driving enjoyment and strong resale demand.
  • Buy the Mazda3 if you want the best balance of reasonable ownership cost, handling, and interior quality.
  • Buy the Lexus IS only if the luxury badge and driving experience justify accepting higher insurance, tire, fuel, and equipment costs.

The best purchase is not necessarily the cheapest listing. It is the cleanest, best-documented example with the simplest suitable configuration, verified recall repairs, no active warning lights, and an independent inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a used Prius really cheap to maintain?

It can be, especially because of fuel savings and reduced brake wear, but it has a separate risk: the traction battery and other hybrid components. Have the hybrid system scanned and the battery inspected before buying an older or high-mileage Prius.

Are CVT transmissions reliable in used Corollas and Civics?

Reliability depends on the exact transmission, model year, condition, and service history. Confirm the correct fluid was used, look for documented service, and reject cars with shuddering, delayed engagement, whining, slipping, warning lights, or unexplained transmission behavior.

Should high mileage disqualify one of these cars?

No. A high-mileage car with complete records and a strong inspection can be a better purchase than a low-mileage neglected car. At 120,000 miles or more, budget for suspension, cooling, air-conditioning, brake, battery, rust, and electronic repairs.

Do the listed costs include fuel and insurance?

No. RepairPal and CarEdge figures concern maintenance, repairs, and in CarEdge’s case normal wear items and expected repairs. Fuel, insurance, registration, taxes, financing, depreciation, and collision damage are separate ownership costs.

Why is the Lexus IS not one of the five cheapest cars overall?

The IS is relatively inexpensive compared with many luxury sedans, but its repair estimates are higher than several mainstream choices. Premium tires, brakes, insurance, fuel, electronics, and AWD components can also raise ownership costs.

The Bottom Line

For the lowest-risk mainstream ownership, start with a Toyota Corolla. Choose the Prius for fuel savings, the Camry for space, the Civic for all-around balance, or the Mazda3 for better driving feel. Whichever model you choose, prioritize maintenance records, a clean structure, low rust, closed recalls, and an independent inspection over a low asking price or a reassuring reputation.
