These five return issues can lead to questions about accuracy, eligibility, or supporting records—but none is a guaranteed IRS audit trigger. The IRS uses several selection methods, including statistical screening and related examinations, and says that selection does not necessarily mean a return is wrong. Treat the items below as reasons to prepare carefully, not as a formula for avoiding scrutiny. IRS audit guidance explains how selection and examinations work.
What are IRS audit red flags?
“Red flag” is shorthand for a return area that may need correction or documentation. The IRS compares tax returns with information it receives and may examine income, expenses, deductions, credits, dependents, or filing status. A mismatch or unusual-looking figure is not, by itself, proof of fraud or an automatic audit trigger.
The IRS does not publish a universal dollar threshold for an “unusual” deduction in the guidance cited here, and the available information does not establish a current audit rate that can be translated into an individual taxpayer’s odds. Do not change an accurate figure to make it resemble someone else’s return.
1. Income or withholding that does not match tax documents
Amounts on a return should agree with the forms and statements that report them. The IRS receives information such as Forms W-2 and 1099 and compares it with return data. Its CP75D notice guidance says wage or withholding amounts may be examined when they appear incorrect.

Before filing, gather every relevant W-2, 1099, and other income statement, then reconcile the reported amounts with your return. A discrepancy can result from a data-entry mistake, a missing or corrected form, or identity theft; it does not automatically mean intentional wrongdoing.
2. Deductions or expenses that are inaccurate or unsupported
Claim only deductions and expenses allowed under the rules that apply to your circumstances and tax year. Calculate them carefully, and keep the records used to arrive at each amount. The IRS may request records supporting expenses and itemized deductions; taking a legitimate deduction or itemizing is not suspicious on its own. IRS audit guidance describes records and examinations.

For most records used to prepare a return, the IRS says to keep them for at least three years from the filing date. Keep a system you can actually retrieve from: paper files should be legible and complete, while electronic records should be organized and accessible. The IRS accepts some electronic records, but advises taxpayers to check with the auditor about what is acceptable in a particular examination.
3. Credits, dependents, or filing status claimed without qualifying
Eligibility rules differ by credit, dependent claim, filing status, and tax year. Do not assume that meeting one test is enough for every claim. For a qualifying child claimed for the Earned Income Credit (EIC), IRS materials identify relationship, age, residency, and joint-return tests. The IRS may request documents concerning EIC, dependents, and filing status, as explained on its CP75A notice page.

4. Figures that conflict with your records or appear inconsistent
The IRS says it uses computer screening and compares returns with norms for similar returns as part of selection. That is a description of one selection method—not a public formula, a published threshold, or evidence that a high income or deduction automatically triggers an audit. IRS audit guidance explains that selection can happen in more than one way.

Your own source documents are the right basis for your figures. Check totals across forms, schedules, and supporting records, and correct errors rather than adjusting truthful numbers to match peer averages.
5. A preparer who suggests unsupported claims or will not sign
A paid tax return preparer must sign the return and include a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). The IRS warns taxpayers not to sign a blank or incomplete return. You remain responsible for what is filed, even when someone else prepares it. See the IRS guidance on choosing a tax professional.

- Collect documents first. Gather income statements, receipts, and records needed for the deductions, credits, dependents, and filing status you intend to claim.
- Reconcile the return. Compare each reported amount with its source document and check calculations and eligibility against the current tax-year instructions.
- Keep a retrievable record trail. Save the documents and calculations used to prepare the return for at least three years from the filing date. Choose paper or electronic storage that is complete, legible, secure, and easy to retrieve.
- Review before filing. Whether you use software or a preparer, inspect the completed return and resolve questions before signing or authorizing submission.
IRS tax software can perform calculations and flag common errors; a paid preparer may be useful when reporting is complex or you need individualized advice. Neither option transfers responsibility for the filed return away from you. What to do if an IRS audit notice arrives
An audit notice identifies the items in question and the records requested. Read it closely, provide the requested documents for each item, and meet the deadline stated in the notice. The IRS says failing to respond by the deadline can lead to an audit report with proposed changes. You may review the notice with a tax preparer; qualifying taxpayers can seek help from a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, which may provide assistance free or for a small fee.
The IRS says it will notify you by mail if your account is selected for audit and will not initiate an audit by telephone. Its audit guidance states: “Should your account be selected for audit, we will notify you by mail. We won’t initiate an audit by telephone.” Use the contact information and instructions on the mailed notice, and navigate independently to IRS.gov when checking information online.
