5 Cryptos to Invest in 2025: A Retrospective Shortlist, Not a Skyrocket Promise

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Chainlink appeared in a July 2025 index constituent list. Here’s what that establishes—and what it does not—about a shortlist of cryptos to invest in 2025.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Chainlink were among the nine constituents in a Nasdaq Crypto Index filing’s July 2, 2025 snapshot. That makes them a dated, documented shortlist—not proof they were the five best investments, emerging projects, or likely to outperform. Network utility can help explain what a token is for; it cannot establish what its price will do.

How this 2025 shortlist was selected

The five assets below were selected because they appeared in a Nasdaq Crypto Index filing that listed nine constituents as of July 2, 2025. Index membership is a transparent way to define a dated list, but it is not an investment ranking or a forecast. The filing does not establish that these assets were “the best,” that they were all emerging projects, or that they would outperform other investments.

This is therefore a retrospective answer to “best cryptos to invest in 2025,” not a current 2026 recommendation. The available official materials do not establish a comparable five-asset performance statistic or a credible forecast for these tokens. A “could skyrocket your portfolio” claim would go beyond the evidence.

What the five assets do—and what that does not prove

Asset Network or service role What the cited material establishes
Bitcoin (BTC) A peer-to-peer electronic cash system using proof of work. The white paper describes the payment-system idea; the Nasdaq-hosted filing identifies Bitcoin as proof of work and notes its capped supply.
Ethereum (ETH) A programmable network for smart contracts and decentralized applications. Official developer documentation describes transactions, gas paid in ETH, consensus, staking and scaling.
Solana (SOL) A network with an official developer portal for building applications. The documentation supports describing it as a developer and application network; the reviewed material does not establish a comparable adoption, performance or valuation metric.
XRP Not characterized in detail here. The Nasdaq-hosted filing includes XRP among the index constituents; the reviewed primary materials do not support a more detailed description of its design or current utility.
Chainlink (LINK) Infrastructure documentation includes cross-chain token transfer and messaging examples. Chainlink’s documentation describes flows in which LINK can pay fees; it does not establish that all use creates value for LINK holders.

Bitcoin (BTC)

The Bitcoin white paper presents Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. The Nasdaq-hosted filing also characterizes it as a proof-of-work network with a capped supply. The filing’s “digital gold” framing is a comparison, not a guarantee that Bitcoin will preserve purchasing power or behave like gold. Its market price can still be volatile.

Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum’s official developer documentation covers smart contracts and decentralized applications, as well as transactions, gas, consensus, staking and scaling. Gas is paid in ETH, but a network’s technical functions or application activity do not by themselves show that ETH is undervalued or that its price will rise.

Solana (SOL)

Solana’s official documentation provides a portal for developers building on the network. That supports a description of its role as an application platform, but not a claim that it leads competitors on speed, fees, adoption or investment returns. No comparable benchmark for those measures is established in the cited material.

XRP

The cited basis for including XRP on this shortlist is its appearance in the July 2025 index constituent list. The reviewed primary sources do not establish enough about XRP’s design or present-day utility to make a more specific functional or investment claim here. That gap matters: index inclusion alone is not a substitute for understanding a token’s rights, use and risks.

Chainlink (LINK)

Chainlink’s documentation includes examples of cross-chain token transfers and messaging, with LINK used to pay fees in a documented flow. That is evidence of a possible role in the system, not proof that every service use creates demand for LINK, that token holders capture the service’s value, or that the token must appreciate.

Risks to weigh before investing

Crypto prices can move sharply, and a useful network does not make its token a safe investment. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy stated in its September 2024 bulletin that “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative.” Its discussion identifies volatility, tracking differences, risks of fraud or manipulation in underlying markets, and sponsor fees as relevant considerations for crypto exchange-traded products.

The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 10, 2025 staff statement describes potential crypto-market disclosure risks including volatility, limited holder rights, valuation and liquidity, technology and cybersecurity, business and operational issues, networks, and legal or regulatory matters. The statement expressly reflects staff views and has no legal force or effect; it should not be treated as a binding rule or as a token-by-token legal classification.

  • Valuation and liquidity: Being included in an index does not show whether a token’s price is attractive, how easily it can be sold in a particular market, or what loss an investor might face.
  • Technology and operations: Network, software, cybersecurity and business failures can affect access or use, apart from ordinary price volatility.
  • Rights and regulation: Token holders may have limited rights, and legal or regulatory conditions can change. The cited SEC staff statement flags these as risks, not as conclusions about each asset in this list.

Direct ownership and crypto ETPs are different

Buying a token directly and buying an exchange-traded product (ETP) are different ways to get exposure. The SEC’s September 2024 Investor Bulletin on Bitcoin and Ether ETPs explains that spot ETPs hold the underlying crypto asset, while futures ETPs hold futures contracts. Their returns can differ from the underlying asset; fees and tracking differences also matter. Spot crypto ETPs are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even when people colloquially call them ETFs.

An ETP’s structure changes how exposure is held and what costs or tracking differences apply; it does not remove the risk of the underlying crypto market. The bulletin addresses Bitcoin and Ether ETPs, so it should not be read as confirmation that a comparable product is available for every asset in this shortlist.

Custody: what a wallet does and the trade-offs of self-custody

A wallet manages the private keys used to access crypto assets; it does not store the assets themselves. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 Crypto Asset Custody Basics bulletin distinguishes internet-connected hot wallets from cold wallets, which are typically physical devices kept offline.

  • Self-custody: You control the keys, but you are responsible for protecting them and the recovery or seed phrase. Losing access can mean losing the ability to access the assets.
  • Third-party custody: A custodian manages access, but its failure, hacking or bankruptcy can put access to assets at risk.
  • Cold storage: The SEC says cold wallets are generally less exposed to cyberthreats than hot wallets. A physical device can still be lost, damaged or stolen, potentially causing permanent loss.

A crypto hardware wallet is one product category for people who independently choose self-custody. It is not a shortcut around safe setup, key protection or recovery planning; the cited material does not evaluate or endorse a particular device.

How to use this list

Use the shortlist as a starting point for comparing different systems, not as a ranked portfolio or a prediction. For each asset, a careful review would need to distinguish what the network does from the token’s actual role, examine supply and dilution mechanics, and assess technology, operational, custody, liquidity and valuation risks. The cited sources do not provide a same-period price-performance comparison for all five, so they cannot support an upside ranking.

Crypto assets are speculative, and investors can lose money. Whether direct ownership or an ETP is being considered, the practical question is not simply which project sounds promising; it is whether the product’s structure, risks and potential loss are understood.
