5 Best Venmo Alternatives in the USA (2026)

Compare four supported Venmo alternatives—Zelle, Cash App, PayPal and Apple Cash—by eligibility, transfer speed, fees and payment safety, with Venmo included for context.

What is the best alternative to Venmo? For payments between people, it depends on what your recipient can use: Zelle is convenient when both people have accounts at participating banks or credit unions; Cash App and PayPal work as standalone services; and Apple Cash is an option for people who meet Apple’s device and U.S. residency requirements. Venmo may still be easiest when your contacts already use it.

The evidence supports four distinct alternatives—not five well-sourced competing services. Rather than pad the list, this guide compares those four with Venmo as the incumbent. Fees, transfer times, eligibility, and protections depend on how you pay and what kind of transaction you make.

How to choose a Venmo alternative

Start with the recipient and the purpose of the payment. A service is useful only if both people can receive and send money through it. Then check where the money goes, how quickly it arrives, and whether a fee applies to your chosen funding method. A personal payment to a friend is not the same as paying a seller for goods or services.

  • Recipient access: Does the recipient already use the service, or can they enroll with an eligible bank account or device?
  • Funding and destination: Are you paying from a bank account, app balance, debit card, or credit card—and does the money arrive in an app balance or bank account?
  • Speed and cost: Compare standard and instant transfers separately. A no-fee payment may still have a fee to move funds out of an app.
  • Transaction type and recourse: Check whether the payment is personal or a purchase. Do not assume a friend payment has purchase protection.

Venmo alternatives compared

Service Who can use it Transfer timing and destination Fees established by the cited source Important qualification
Zelle Both people need eligible checking or savings accounts at participating institutions; Zelle says it is available in more than 2,400 bank and credit union apps. Payments to enrolled recipients typically arrive within minutes; the cited service page does not give a comparable bank-transfer schedule. Zelle reports that 99.40% of consumer checking and savings accounts linked to Zelle do not charge to send, receive, or request money. This is the provider’s Q1 2026 survey of financial institutions offering Zelle, not an independently verified market-wide figure. Zelle says payments to enrolled recipients cannot be reversed. Confirm recipient details before sending.
Cash App A standalone app; available funding methods can depend on eligibility and identity verification. A standard transfer from Cash App Balance to a linked account typically takes 1–3 business days. An instant transfer is also available. Cash App’s U.S. terms, last updated June 4, 2026, list no fee for standard balance transfers, 0.5%–2.5% for instant transfers, subject to stated minimums and maximums, and 3% for sending from a credit card. Cash App is not an FDIC-insured bank. Pass-through FDIC insurance for balances applies only under specified account or card conditions.
PayPal Useful for people who use PayPal; PayPal also describes payment links and transfers between PayPal and Venmo accounts. The cited U.S. send-money page describes personal transfers but does not state a comparable delivery time in the supplied evidence. Domestic personal transfers funded by a linked bank account or PayPal balance have no fee. The U.S. page lists 2.90% plus a fixed fee for card-funded domestic personal transfers; confirm the fee shown at checkout. PayPal says personal payments are not covered by Purchase Protection. It recommends a goods-and-services transaction for purchases that may qualify.
Apple Cash Requires U.S. residency and a device in the United States; sending and receiving take place in Messages or Wallet. Apple Cash Family requires a family organizer for minors. Timing and transfer fees are not stated in the cited evidence. Not stated in the cited evidence. Its device and geography requirements make it a fit mainly for eligible Apple users.
Venmo Practical when the recipient network already uses Venmo. Timing and destination details are not stated in the cited fee page evidence. Venmo’s fee page lists no fee for U.S. personal transfers funded by balance, debit card, or bank account, and a 3% fee for credit-card funding. Included as incumbent context, not as an alternative.

1. Zelle: best when both people bank with participating institutions

Zelle is integrated into more than 2,400 bank and credit union apps, according to its current service page. Both sender and recipient need eligible checking or savings accounts at participating institutions. For enrolled recipients, Zelle says payments typically arrive within minutes. Its Q1 2026 survey of financial institutions offering the service found that 99.40% of linked consumer checking and savings accounts did not charge to send, receive, or request money; that figure is Zelle’s survey result, not an independent market-wide measurement. Zelle’s service and eligibility information provides the current overview.

#1 Best Overall
Visa Physical Gift Card $200 (plus $6.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

The key trade-off is mistake recovery. Zelle’s official FAQ states, “No, Zelle® payments cannot be reversed,” for payments to enrolled recipients. Verify the person’s details before confirming, and do not use Zelle to pay someone you do not trust. Zelle’s reversal FAQ explains the rule.

2. Cash App: a standalone app with optional bank transfers

Cash App can suit people who want a separate P2P app rather than a bank’s integrated transfer feature. Its U.S. terms say standard transfers from a Cash App Balance to a linked account have no fee and typically take 1–3 business days. Instant transfers cost 0.5%–2.5%, subject to minimum and maximum amounts disclosed in the terms; sending from a credit card costs 3%. These terms were last updated June 4, 2026, and transfer availability may depend on identity verification and eligibility. Review Cash App’s U.S. terms for the applicable details.

Visa Virtual eGift Card
  • Visa Virtual eGift Cards are designed for online use only. Gift Cards are subject to Terms and Conditions: a.co/5bw3qXJ
  • When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.
  • This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
  • Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
  • This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.

Do not equate an app balance with a bank deposit. Cash App says it is not an FDIC-insured bank; pass-through FDIC insurance may apply to balances only when specified account or card conditions are met. A balance that does not meet those conditions is not covered that way. See Cash App’s U.S. terms for the conditions.

3. PayPal: useful for payment links and cross-service transfers

PayPal is a practical choice when you and the recipient already use it, or when a payment link is more convenient than exchanging account details. PayPal also describes transfers between PayPal and Venmo accounts. Its U.S. send-money page says domestic personal transfers funded by a linked bank account or PayPal balance have no fee; card-funded domestic personal transfers are listed at 2.90% plus a fixed fee. The page was accessed October 7, 2026, so check the fee shown at checkout and the current PayPal U.S. send-money page before paying.

Visa Virtual eGift Card

Use the right transaction type. PayPal says personal payments are not covered by Purchase Protection. For a purchase, PayPal recommends a goods-and-services transaction, which may be eligible for purchase protection under its rules. That distinction does not turn an ordinary friend transfer into a protected purchase. Details are in PayPal’s personal-payment guidance.

4. Apple Cash: a fit for eligible Apple users

Apple Cash lets eligible users send and receive money through Messages or Wallet, but it is not a device-neutral option. Apple says users must be U.S. residents with a device in the United States. Apple Cash Family, which allows a family organizer to set up Apple Cash for minors, has a separate family setup requirement. Check Apple’s Apple Cash setup and eligibility information before relying on it. The cited Apple information does not establish comparable transfer-fee or timing figures, so check the terms presented for your account.

When Venmo may still be the easiest choice

If your friends, family, or regular contacts already use Venmo, switching may create more friction than it removes. Venmo’s fee page lists no fee for U.S. personal transfers funded by a balance, debit card, or bank account, and a 3% fee when the sender uses a credit card. That is a personal-transfer fee comparison, not a claim about purchase transactions or every Venmo feature. Review Venmo’s current fee page for current terms.

Protect yourself before sending money

The Federal Trade Commission warns that “sending money through a payment app is like sending cash — it’s very hard to get it back.” Treat an unfamiliar recipient or a request to pay a stranger as a risk, not as a routine transfer. The FTC recommends confirming recipient details, never paying a fee to claim a prize, and protecting the account with a PIN or multifactor authentication. Read the FTC’s payment-app safety guidance.
