5 Best Small Business Website Builders for 2026

Wix is the best overall small-business website builder for 2026, but Squarespace, Shopify, GoDaddy, and Hostinger are better for specific budgets and business models. Compare real pricing, renewal traps, transaction fees, booking, ecommerce, SEO, and migration limits before choosing.

For most U.S. small businesses, Wix is the best overall website builder in 2026. Choose Squarespace if polished design is the priority, Shopify if selling products is the core business, GoDaddy if you need a fast local-service site with booking, and Hostinger if the lowest introductory cost matters most.

This comparison is for a hosted, no-code website decision—not a universal ranking. A five-page consultant website, an appointment-based salon, and a 500-product store have very different requirements. The prices below are U.S. reference prices checked August 10, 2026; promotions, taxes, billing terms, geography, payment eligibility, and renewal rates can change.

  • Best overall: Wix Core, listed at $29 per month when billed annually.
  • Best for design: Squarespace Basic, listed at $16 per month with annual billing.
  • Best for ecommerce: Shopify Basic, $29 per month when billed annually.
  • Best for fast setup and appointments: GoDaddy Premium, currently displayed at $14.99 per month on an annual offer.
  • Best budget option: Hostinger Premium at $2.99 per month equivalent for a 48-month prepaid term, or Business at $3.79 per month equivalent if you need payments and ecommerce.

Quick comparison

The five builders below are not interchangeable. The right choice depends primarily on whether your business needs lead generation, appointments, content publishing, or product operations.

Builder Best fit Recommended starting point Current U.S. price reference
Wix Most local services, consultants, freelancers, and small businesses Core $29/month when billed annually
Squarespace Design-led service businesses, portfolios, and boutique brands Basic $16/month with annual billing
Shopify Product-focused ecommerce and multichannel retail Basic $29/month when billed annually
GoDaddy Website Builder Fast local-service sites and appointment businesses Premium $14.99/month on the displayed annual offer
Hostinger Website Builder Low-cost brochure sites and modest stores Premium or Business $2.99 or $3.79/month equivalent for 48 months, paid upfront

Pricing note: Annualized prices are not the same as month-to-month prices. Hostinger’s displayed rate requires a four-year prepayment, and GoDaddy’s displayed figures are promotional annual-plan offers. Taxes, domain renewals, payment processing, email, apps, scheduling, and other add-ons may be extra.

How these builders were evaluated

There is no objective universal winner. This ranking weighs the factors that usually determine whether a small-business website remains affordable and useful after launch:

Criterion Suggested weight What it means
Business-model fit 25% Whether the platform matches a service site, store, appointment business, portfolio, or content operation
Total cost of ownership 20% Subscription, renewal, domain, email, payment fees, apps, and other recurring costs
Ease of use 15% Onboarding, editor clarity, AI assistance, mobile workflow, and publishing
Growth capability 15% Products, staff, locations, traffic, languages, currencies, integrations, and upgrade paths
Design flexibility 10% Templates, layout control, responsive behavior, and brand consistency
Business tools 10% Bookings, forms, customer management, invoices, email marketing, analytics, and payments
Portability and lock-in 5% Domain control, export options, data access, redirects, and migration difficulty

This is a plan-and-capability comparison, not a claim of personal hands-on testing. The providers’ current plan pages and support documentation are the best sources for confirming what is available at checkout.

1. Wix: best overall for most small businesses

Wix is the safest general-purpose recommendation when a business needs one platform for its website, lead forms, booking, payments, marketing, and modest ecommerce without turning the project into a technical build.

Price and best starting plan

Wix’s U.S. reference pricing lists:

  • Free: $0, with Wix branding and a Wix subdomain.
  • Light: $17/month when billed annually.
  • Core: $29/month when billed annually.
  • Business: $39/month when billed annually.
  • Business Elite: $159/month when billed annually.

For a real business, Core is usually the practical minimum if you need to accept payments, sell products, or add scheduling. Light is suitable for a professional informational site but is not the right choice for a store or payment-dependent business. Wix says prices vary by geography, currency, taxes, and billing period.

Why it works

  • A flexible drag-and-drop editor gives owners substantial visual control.
  • Wix lists more than 900 templates, plus AI-assisted site creation.
  • Hosting, SSL, SEO tools, marketing features, forms, and a custom domain offer for the first year are bundled into eligible paid plans.
  • Core and higher plans support payments, ecommerce, and scheduling.
  • A large app ecosystem can add specialized functions when the built-in tools are not enough.
  • The pricing page lists 24/7 customer care and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Limitations to understand

Flexibility is also Wix’s main risk. An owner can create inconsistent spacing, crowded pages, weak mobile layouts, and too many calls to action unless the site follows a simple design system. Apps and advanced features may add monthly charges.

The free plan is useful for experimenting, but Wix branding and a Wix-branded URL make it unsuitable for most customer-facing businesses. A Wix site also is not equivalent to a portable, self-hosted WordPress installation. If you leave, the domain may be transferable or reconnectable, but the design and platform-specific features may need to be rebuilt.

Choose Wix if

You need broad functionality and visual control, but do not want to manage hosting, plugins, security updates, or a custom development project.

Choose something else if: product inventory and shipping operations are the business, or if you want maximum content portability and plugin-level control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Squarespace: best for polished design and service brands

Squarespace is the strongest design-led choice for photographers, creative professionals, consultants, coaches, restaurants, wellness businesses, and boutique brands that want a polished site quickly and do not need a complex retail operation.

Price and plan structure

Squarespace currently uses four primary website plans: Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced. The Basic plan is listed at $16/month with annual billing in current U.S. comparison pricing. Squarespace’s own pricing page confirms annual billing, a 14-day trial, and savings of up to 36%, but the exact checkout amount can vary by region and offer.

What makes it attractive

  • Professionally designed templates and a structured editor make visual consistency easier than in a highly free-form builder.
  • Website plans include mobile-optimized pages, SSL, analytics, SEO tools, blogging, and selling features.
  • It supports products and services, digital content, courses, memberships, invoices, and eligible subscriptions.
  • Basic allows two contributors; higher plans allow unlimited contributors, which matters when a small team shares editing duties.
  • It is a strong fit for a business whose website is primarily a brand and lead-generation asset.

Commerce fees can change the answer

Squarespace’s current comparison shows a 2% online-store transaction fee on Basic and 0% on Core, Plus, and Advanced. Digital content and membership fees are listed separately: 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus, and 0% on Advanced. Those platform fees are in addition to payment processing. In the U.S., Squarespace Payments lists standard card processing at 2.9% + $0.30 through its current fee documentation.

That means Basic can be attractive for a service website with occasional sales, but a store with meaningful volume should compare the higher plan against the 2% fee. Eliminating a platform transaction fee does not eliminate card-processing costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitations to understand

The editor is more structured and less freely placeable than Wix. Advanced custom code, JavaScript, iframes, and code injection require attention to plan restrictions; current Squarespace documentation says JavaScript or iframe code in code blocks is not functional on Basic.

Acuity Scheduling, domains, Email Campaigns, Google Workspace, and some other products can be separate subscriptions rather than being included in the website plan. If appointments are central to revenue, price the website plan and scheduling service together. Squarespace is also less appropriate than Shopify for complex inventory, international selling, shipping workflows, and large catalogs.

  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Choose Squarespace if

Your primary differentiator is presentation: a strong portfolio, elegant service pages, photography, brand storytelling, or a boutique customer experience.

Choose something else if: you need unrestricted layout control, extensive third-party integrations, or a serious commerce back office.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Shopify: best when ecommerce is the business

Shopify is the best choice for product-focused businesses that need a real commerce operation rather than a website with a small store attached.

Price and transaction costs

Shopify’s current U.S. pricing page lists:

  • Basic: $39/month monthly or $29/month when billed yearly.
  • Grow: $105/month monthly or $79/month when billed yearly.
  • Advanced: $399/month monthly or $299/month when billed yearly.
  • Plus: from $2,300/month.

Basic is aimed at solo entrepreneurs, Grow at small teams, and Advanced at higher-volume or internationally oriented businesses.

When Shopify Payments is used, current U.S. online card rates start at:

  • Basic: 2.9% + $0.30.
  • Grow: 2.7% + $0.30.
  • Advanced: 2.5% + $0.30.

If a merchant uses a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify lists additional third-party transaction fees of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, and 0.6% on Advanced. Rates and payment availability vary by country, payment method, and eligibility. Currency conversion, chargebacks, apps, and other costs can affect the actual margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it is the ecommerce pick

  • Basic supports unlimited products and a full online store.
  • It includes inventory management, checkout, discounts, gift cards, abandoned-checkout recovery, shipping labels, tax tools, analytics, and marketing automations.
  • The current comparison lists 10 inventory locations on Basic.
  • It supports social and marketplace sales, plus point-of-sale tools for in-person selling.
  • Shopify Markets can support localized selling, local currencies, local payment methods, local domains, and duties or tax collection where eligible.
  • Grow includes up to five staff accounts and Advanced up to 15; Basic has no additional staff accounts according to the current pricing table.

Limitations to understand

Shopify is usually too much platform for a five-page consultant or contractor website. Its design editor is more constrained than Wix or Squarespace, and apps can create a significant recurring-cost burden. A store should calculate not just the subscription, but payment processing, third-party transaction fees, shipping, tax services, apps, and staff access.

Advanced shipping rates and some international capabilities may require a higher plan or Shopify Payments. Shopify is the strongest operational choice for inventory and orders, not necessarily the cheapest way to publish a basic marketing site.

Choose Shopify if

Products, inventory, shipping, repeat purchases, multiple sales channels, or international commerce are central to the business.

Choose something else if: the business mainly sells expertise, appointments, or local services and only needs a few payment-enabled pages.

4. GoDaddy Website Builder: best for a fast launch and simple booking

GoDaddy Website Builder is optimized for speed and guided setup. It suits contractors, home-service companies, tutors, salons, consultants, and other owners who want a basic website, marketing dashboard, payments, and appointment booking without spending much time on design decisions.

Current displayed offers

GoDaddy’s current Website Builder page displays annual-plan offers of:

  • Basic: $9.99/month.
  • Premium: $14.99/month.
  • Commerce: $20.99/month.

These are promotional annual-plan prices, not guaranteed long-term renewal prices. The displayed monthly amount represents an annual-plan offer rather than a month-to-month commitment. Confirm renewal pricing and the total charge before paying.

Plan differences that matter

  • Basic: website tools, a custom domain, AI tools, analytics, basic marketing, 100 monthly email-marketing sends, social posting, payment links or QR-code payments in the U.S. and Canada, U.S. invoicing, and donations.
  • Premium: adds online booking, appointment payments and deposits, 25,000 email sends per month, and expanded marketing tools.
  • Commerce: adds unlimited products and services, 0% online-store transaction fees, a listed U.S. ecommerce card rate of 2.7% + $0.30, automatic U.S. sales-tax calculation, and shoppable social posts in the U.S. and Canada.

GoDaddy also advertises more than 100 templates, AI-generated websites and copy, a free domain on annual Website Builder plans, and 24/7 support. Payment links, invoicing, tax, and social-commerce features have geographic restrictions.

Limitations to understand

Basic does not provide a full online store; it provides payment links and QR-code payments. The editor and content-management system offer less flexibility than Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress. Businesses with demanding SEO, content, integration, catalog, or customer-management needs may outgrow it quickly.

For booking, verify more than the word booking. Check whether the plan supports deposits, separate staff calendars, recurring appointments, reminders, rescheduling, cancellations, and the payment methods your customers use.

Choose GoDaddy if

You need a local service website live quickly and Premium’s booking and deposit workflow matches your operation.

Choose something else if: you expect a substantial store, a content-heavy website, unusual integrations, or extensive design control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Hostinger Website Builder: best for a low-cost starter site

Hostinger offers the lowest displayed entry price, but the headline rate requires the greatest commitment. It is suitable for a new business that wants a hosted brochure site or modest store, AI assistance, email, and basic SEO tools at a low initial cost.

Price, prepayment, and renewal

Hostinger’s current Website Builder page displays:

  • Premium: $2.99/month equivalent for 48 months, paid upfront at $143.52; renews at $10.99/month.
  • Business: $3.79/month equivalent for 48 months, paid upfront at $181.92; renews at $16.99/month.

Premium supports up to three websites and includes 20 GB of storage. Business supports up to 50 websites and includes 50 GB of storage. Business adds ecommerce for up to 1,000 products and advertises zero platform transaction fees. The payment processors themselves are not necessarily free.

Why it is good value

  • More than 300 templates and a drag-and-drop editor.
  • AI tools for site creation, copy, images, logos, products, and SEO assistance.
  • A free domain for one year on eligible plans.
  • Email mailboxes included for one year on eligible plans.
  • A 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Business supports physical and digital products, services, appointments, donations, and print-on-demand.

Limitations to understand

Premium may let you create a store, but Hostinger states that payment methods require the Business plan. The current ecommerce documentation also says multiple currencies and multiple languages are not natively supported. That makes Hostinger a poor fit for a multilingual or international store even if the initial price is attractive.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hostinger has a smaller ecosystem and is less suited to complex integrations, advanced commerce, or a business expecting a large catalog and sophisticated operations. Plan names, limits, and AI features are evolving, so confirm the live offer before purchase.

Choose Hostinger if

You have a strict budget, can pay for 48 months upfront, and your website or store fits the current product, language, currency, payment, and integration limits.

Choose something else if: you need flexibility, international selling, a mature app ecosystem, or the freedom to leave without rebuilding platform-specific features.

Best website builder by business type

Business need First choice Alternative Why
Local service business Wix GoDaddy Both can support service pages, leads, payments, and marketing; GoDaddy is faster, while Wix is more flexible.
Consultant or freelancer Squarespace Wix Squarespace creates a polished brand presentation; Wix offers more layout and business-tool flexibility.
Creative portfolio Squarespace Wix Design consistency and portfolio presentation matter more than complex commerce.
Appointment-based business Wix or GoDaddy Squarespace plus Acuity Wix includes scheduling on Core and above; GoDaddy includes booking, payments, and deposits on Premium and above; Acuity is a separate Squarespace subscription.
Product store Shopify Wix or Squarespace Shopify is built around catalog, inventory, orders, shipping, and channels. Wix or Squarespace are reasonable for lighter selling.
Budget starter site Hostinger GoDaddy Hostinger has the lowest displayed introductory rate, but requires four years upfront; GoDaddy emphasizes a fast annual-plan launch.
Content-heavy site WordPress.com Squarespace WordPress.com is stronger when plugins, publishing, and extensibility matter.
International ecommerce Shopify WordPress with qualified support Shopify’s eligible Markets features address currencies, local payments, domains, and duties; Hostinger’s current native store limits do not.

What a small-business website really costs

The advertised plan is only one part of the budget. Separate these five costs before comparing platforms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Subscription price: the builder or hosting plan.
  2. Renewal price: the rate after the introductory term or promotion ends.
  3. Domain renewal: a domain may be free only for the first year, and the renewal rate depends on the extension and registrar.
  4. Payment processing: the card, wallet, or payment-provider charge on each transaction.
  5. Add-ons: email, scheduling, apps, premium templates, marketing, shipping, memberships, advanced analytics, or professional setup.

For a service site, the lowest plan may be adequate. For a store or booking business, fees on transactions and add-ons can matter more than the base subscription. TechRadar’s comparison also warns that domains, apps, transaction fees, payment processing, chargebacks, and professional services can materially increase the advertised price.

Illustrative first-term comparison

Platform and plan Displayed term What the displayed price means Important cost warning
Wix Core $29/month billed annually About $348 for 12 months before tax at the listed rate Apps, email, payment processing, and future renewal may cost extra.
Squarespace Basic $16/month with annual billing About $192 for 12 months at the listed rate Basic carries a 2% online-store transaction fee; scheduling and Google Workspace may be separate.
Shopify Basic $29/month billed yearly About $348 for 12 months at the listed rate Payment processing, third-party transaction fees when applicable, apps, shipping, and tax services can add up.
GoDaddy Premium $14.99/month annual offer About $179.88 at the displayed annualized rate Promotional pricing must be separated from renewal pricing.
Hostinger Premium $2.99/month equivalent for 48 months $143.52 charged upfront for four years Renews at $10.99/month; the low rate is not a one-month commitment.
Hostinger Business $3.79/month equivalent for 48 months $181.92 charged upfront for four years Renews at $16.99/month; Business is required for payment methods.

These calculations use the displayed rates and do not include taxes or optional services. Do not compare Hostinger’s four-year prepaid amount directly with a one-year Wix or Shopify price without accounting for the different commitment.

Payment fees are not platform fees

A platform may advertise 0% transaction fees while a payment processor still charges for each card payment. Conversely, a low website plan may carry a platform fee on top of card processing. For example:

  • Squarespace Basic lists a 2% online-store transaction fee, plus payment processing.
  • Shopify lists additional third-party transaction fees when Shopify Payments is not used, as well as card-processing rates.
  • GoDaddy Commerce advertises 0% online-store transaction fees but lists a U.S. card rate of 2.7% + $0.30.
  • Hostinger advertises zero platform transaction fees on Business, but payment processors may still charge their own rates.

Features to verify before you buy

Every builder can produce a visually acceptable homepage. The more important question is whether it supports the business workflow behind that page.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Minimum functionality for most businesses

  • Custom domain connection and clear access to domain ownership and renewal.
  • HTTPS/SSL and mobile-responsive pages.
  • Contact forms, a click-to-call phone number, map, service area, and business hours.
  • Dedicated service or product pages.
  • Reviews and testimonials that are genuine and current.
  • Analytics and conversion tracking.
  • Search-engine controls such as page titles, descriptions, URLs, image alt text, redirects, sitemap behavior, canonical settings, and analytics integrations.
  • Social-profile links and email capture.
  • Privacy, cookie, accessibility, and other disclosures appropriate to the business and its audience.
  • Backups, revision history, or another way to recover from a bad edit.
  • A clear cancellation and data-export policy.

For local businesses

A builder is only one part of local marketing. Keep the business name, address, phone number, hours, and service area accurate everywhere. Add clear calls to action, individual service pages where appropriate, a quote or booking flow, genuine customer reviews, analytics, and a process for updating seasonal hours and availability.

No builder guarantees local search rankings. A platform’s SEO controls help you publish and measure the site; they do not replace accurate business information, useful content, good reviews, relevant links, and a credible customer experience.

For appointment businesses

Check the complete booking workflow, not just whether the builder says it has booking:

  • Is scheduling native or a separate subscription?
  • Can customers pay deposits?
  • Are recurring appointments supported?
  • Can each staff member have a separate calendar?
  • Are reminders, rescheduling, and cancellations included?
  • Can the system handle the required service duration, buffer time, locations, and time zones?
  • Is the feature available on the plan you are comparing?

GoDaddy places booking, appointment payments, and deposits on Premium and above. Wix lists scheduling and services on Core and above. Squarespace identifies Acuity Scheduling as a separate subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For product businesses

Ask how the platform handles product variants, inventory locations, returns, shipping rates, taxes, discounts, abandoned carts, subscriptions, marketplaces, point-of-sale sales, staff access, and international orders. Shopify is generally the better starting point when those operations are central. Wix and Squarespace are more sensible when selling is secondary to the brand site. GoDaddy Commerce and Hostinger Business are better treated as simpler-store options.

AI, SEO, content, and future growth

AI speeds up the first draft; it does not finish the website

AI site generation is now common across Wix, GoDaddy, Hostinger, and Squarespace. Treat it as an onboarding shortcut, not a reason to skip editing. Review every generated headline, service description, price, image, claim, testimonial, and policy. AI can invent services you do not provide, publish incorrect business details, make unsupported promises, or use images that are unsuitable for commercial use.

Before choosing an AI-heavy workflow, ask whether the generated layout and copy can be edited precisely, whether prompts or credits are limited, whether changes can be undone, and whether the finished site can maintain a consistent brand voice.

SEO controls are not ranking guarantees

All five shortlisted platforms offer some SEO or marketing support, but do not choose based on a vague claim that one builder is simply SEO-friendly. Compare practical controls: editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs, redirects, alt text, sitemap and indexing behavior, structured data, canonical settings, blogging, analytics, and integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wix and Squarespace are well suited to service pages and regular content. Shopify is strongest when SEO is part of a larger product, category, and commerce structure. GoDaddy and Hostinger can be adequate for a straightforward site, but verify the specific controls you need before committing. A blog can generally be added to a growing site, but the publishing workflow and flexibility vary considerably; content-heavy businesses should consider WordPress.com.

International selling requires a separate check

Hostinger’s current ecommerce documentation says its Website Builder stores do not natively support multiple languages or multiple currencies. Shopify’s current plan comparison lists localized selling, local currencies, local payment methods, local domains, and duties or tax collection through eligible Markets configurations. Availability depends on country, Shopify Payments, and other eligibility conditions.

If international commerce is a realistic three-year goal, do not select a platform solely on today’s low price. Confirm currencies, translations, tax handling, payment methods, shipping, domain structure, and customer support before building the catalog.

Portability, cancellation, and lock-in

Hosted builders are attractive because hosting, security, updates, and editing are bundled. The trade-off is dependence on the provider’s editor, data model, pricing, and policies. Before paying, ask:

  • Can URL redirects be preserved?
  • Can the design be migrated, or would it have to be rebuilt?
  • What happens to forms, bookings, memberships, and store data after cancellation?
  • Can you download customer and order data in a usable format?
  • Are there fees or deadlines associated with domain renewal or transfer?

Do not assume that a hosted site can be exported as a complete, portable website. Platform-specific bookings, memberships, apps, templates, and commerce settings commonly require reconstruction elsewhere. Keep ownership of the domain, maintain a copy of important text and images, export customer or order data where allowed, and document your URL structure before a major move.

Strong alternatives to the five

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a serious alternative for content-heavy businesses and owners who want plugins without separately managing hosting. As of 2026, WordPress.com says plugin installation is available on all paid plans, while its Business plan adds backups, staging, SFTP/SSH, database access, advanced SEO, and developer tools.

Do not confuse WordPress.com with self-hosted WordPress.org. WordPress.org is open-source software installed on a host selected by the site owner; WordPress.com is a hosted service operated by Automattic. WordPress offers more extensibility and ownership potential, but also introduces more decisions about themes, plugins, updates, backups, security, and maintenance.

Square Online

Square Online deserves consideration if the business already uses Square payments or point-of-sale tools. Verify current pricing, regional availability, product limits, inventory synchronization, and the exact POS integration before choosing it; older comparison articles may not reflect the current offer.

Webflow

Webflow is worth considering for a design-led team or agency that needs more layout and interaction control than Wix or Squarespace. It is generally less beginner-friendly and is excessive for many conventional local-business websites.

IONOS

IONOS may appeal to owners prioritizing low introductory pricing, bundled hosting, or security features. Check the current term, renewal price, domain policy, and feature limits separately because introductory offers can differ substantially by term and promotion.

Prepare these materials before building

A builder cannot compensate for missing business information. Gather the following before selecting a template:

  • Business name, domain preference, logo, colors, and brand guidelines.
  • A one-sentence explanation of who you help, what you do, and where you operate.
  • Services or product list, prices, packages, and quote process.
  • Service area, address if applicable, phone number, email, and hours.
  • Professional photographs and permission to use them.
  • Genuine testimonials and review links.
  • Booking, quote-request, payment, refund, privacy, and shipping requirements.
  • Seasonal hours and a process for keeping them current.
  • Analytics and conversion goals, such as calls, forms, bookings, or purchases.
  • A list of the people who need editing access and the level of access each person should have.

Before publishing, test the site on a phone, submit every form, click every phone and email link, complete a test booking or purchase, check confirmation messages, review accessibility basics, and confirm that the domain and HTTPS work correctly.

A practical decision tree

  1. Are products and inventory the center of the business? Choose Shopify unless the store is very small and simple.
  2. Is the website mainly a polished brand, portfolio, or service presentation? Choose Squarespace if design consistency is paramount, or Wix if you want more layout and feature flexibility.
  3. Do customers need appointments, deposits, or staff calendars? Compare Wix Core or higher with GoDaddy Premium or higher; compare the complete cost and workflow, including any separate scheduling service.
  4. Do you need a site live with minimal setup? GoDaddy is the guided, speed-focused choice.
  5. Is initial cost the overriding concern? Hostinger may be the value pick, but only if four-year prepayment, renewal pricing, and its commerce limitations are acceptable.
  6. Do you need plugins, extensive publishing, or deeper ownership and extensibility? Consider WordPress.com or a properly managed self-hosted WordPress setup.

For the safest default, choose Wix. Reconsider that default when the business model clearly points to another platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which website builder is cheapest after the introductory period?

Among the five, Hostinger publishes the clearest low renewal figures: Premium renews at $10.99 per month and Business at $16.99 per month. However, those plans require 48 months paid upfront and have fewer capabilities than Shopify or Wix. GoDaddy’s displayed offer is promotional, so confirm its renewal price before comparing long-term cost.

Do website builders include business email?

Do not assume that a website plan includes a permanent business inbox. Hostinger lists email mailboxes for one year on eligible plans. Squarespace identifies Google Workspace as a separate subscription, and email terms for Wix, GoDaddy, and Shopify should be confirmed at checkout. Budget for email separately unless the plan explicitly includes it beyond the introductory period.

Can I use my existing domain with these builders?

Paid plans from the shortlisted builders can generally connect a custom domain, but the exact connection, transfer, renewal, and first-year-free terms differ. Keep control of the domain registrar account and check whether the domain remains yours and transferable if you cancel the website plan.

Is Shopify suitable for a service-business website?

It can publish a service website, but it is usually more expensive and operationally complex than necessary for a business that mainly generates leads or appointments. Use Shopify when products, inventory, shipping, repeat purchases, or multiple sales channels are central.

Can AI build my entire small-business website?

AI can generate a useful first draft of pages, layout, copy, images, or products, but a person must verify every claim, price, service, testimonial, image, and business detail. AI-generated content should be edited for accuracy, originality, accessibility, and brand voice before publication.

Will choosing an SEO-friendly builder guarantee that my site ranks?

No. Builders provide different SEO controls, but none guarantees rankings. Results also depend on accurate local information, useful service pages, technical setup, reviews, relevant links, content quality, and the competitiveness of the search results.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Wix if you want the most balanced small-business platform. Pick Squarespace for a design-first service brand, Shopify for serious ecommerce, GoDaddy for a fast appointment-oriented launch, and Hostinger for a low-cost site when its four-year commitment and feature limits fit. Before paying, compare the renewal price, domain and email costs, transaction fees, add-ons, booking requirements, international needs, and migration options—not just the headline monthly rate.
