Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the best Linux distribution for most day traders. It has the clearest compatibility story for TradingView and thinkorswim, works with Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation, and is supported by MetaTrader 5’s Linux installation method. Linux Mint 22.x is the better beginner choice, Fedora Workstation suits newer hardware, Debian 13 favors conservative stability, and Kubuntu 24.04 LTS is ideal for highly customized multi-monitor workspaces.
Your broker and trading platform should make the final decision. A Linux distribution cannot improve fills, spreads, execution quality, or trading results; its practical benefits are compatibility, predictable updates, display support, security, and recovery.

Can you day trade on Linux?
Yes, provided your broker and required tools support Linux. The experience depends less on the distribution’s brand than on how each application runs:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Native Linux application: Interactive Brokers provides a Linux version of Trader Workstation.
- Browser-based platform: A modern browser may be the lowest-maintenance option for broker platforms and TradingView.
- Windows software through Wine: MetaTrader 5’s official Linux installation route uses Wine, so it is not a conventional native Linux application.
- Remote Windows computer or virtual machine: This can preserve access to Windows-only broker software, plugins, or automation while Linux remains your local desktop.
Linux is therefore a strong fit for web-based trading, TradingView, Interactive Brokers, and supported thinkorswim installations. It is a more conditional choice for MetaTrader 5, especially when your strategy depends on proprietary plugins, Windows DLLs, Expert Advisors, indicators, or third-party bridges.

Before changing operating systems, identify your exact broker, account type, data feeds, order-entry tools, automation, and external devices. A broker may support MT5 generally without supporting your particular Wine configuration or plugin.
How these distros were selected
This ranking is an editorial recommendation based on operational risk rather than benchmark testing. The most important factors are:
- Official broker and platform support.
- Availability of native packages or well-documented installation methods.
- Wine practicality for MetaTrader 5.
- Stability during market hours and update predictability.
- Security-update lifecycle.
- Hardware, graphics, docking, and multi-monitor support.
- Ease of recovery and access to troubleshooting documentation.
- How easily the setup can be reproduced on another machine.
- Suitability for manual and automated trading.
Platform compatibility receives the greatest weight, followed by stability and support lifecycle. Hardware and display support, installation and recovery, predictable updates, and customization also matter. This approach favors Ubuntu without implying that Ubuntu executes orders faster.
1. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: Best overall
Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS if you use several platforms or want the lowest general compatibility risk. It is the safest default for a new Linux trading workstation.
Why it ranks first
- TradingView officially tests Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, and 24.04 for its desktop application.
- thinkorswim lists Ubuntu 18.04 or newer among its supported Linux distributions.
- MetaTrader’s Linux installation script explicitly supports Ubuntu.
- Interactive Brokers supplies a 64-bit Linux version of Trader Workstation.
- Ubuntu has a large documentation and troubleshooting ecosystem.
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS receives standard security maintenance through May 2029.
TradingView distributes Linux builds as both .deb and Snap packages. On Ubuntu or another Debian-based distribution, the official .deb package is generally the least surprising starting point. TradingView also notes that its Snap build is unstable on native Wayland. If the application launches incorrectly or charts render badly, try an X11 session or the .deb package before replacing the operating system. An IPv6-prioritizing network can also cause connection problems because TradingView’s Linux desktop application does not currently support IPv6.
Ubuntu’s main disadvantages are mainly workflow preferences. Some users dislike Snap packaging, and GNOME’s default desktop may be less comfortable than Cinnamon or KDE Plasma for traders arranging many windows.
Best edition: Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS on x86-64 hardware.

TradingView Linux requirements, thinkorswim technical requirements, MetaTrader Linux installation, and Ubuntu’s release cycle provide the relevant vendor details.
2. Linux Mint 22.x: Best for beginners and Windows converts
Choose Linux Mint 22.x if familiarity and ease of use matter more than having your distribution named directly in every vendor support matrix.
Mint’s Cinnamon desktop provides a traditional layout with a familiar application menu, taskbar, system tray, and window behavior. That can reduce the adjustment period for someone moving from Windows to Linux.
Strengths
- Familiar desktop for Windows users.
- Ubuntu-compatible software ecosystem.
- MetaTrader’s Linux installation script explicitly supports Linux Mint.
- Good fit for browser platforms, TradingView, IBKR TWS, and manual MT5 use.
- Simple desktop administration for users new to Linux.
Limitations
TradingView’s official tested-distribution list names Ubuntu rather than Mint, although its .deb package is intended for Debian-based systems. Similarly, support documentation may assume Ubuntu commands or paths. Mint is not “faster for trading”; its advantage is familiarity and usability.
Mint is a sensible choice for a manual trader who wants TradingView, a broker website, Interactive Brokers, or moderate MetaTrader use. Before installation, verify the exact Mint 22.x point release and test the graphics driver, monitors, dock, and required applications from a live USB.

3. Fedora Workstation: Best for newer hardware
Choose Fedora Workstation if you use recent hardware and are comfortable testing updates outside market hours. Fedora generally provides a newer kernel and desktop stack than more conservative distributions, which can help with recent laptops, graphics hardware, high-resolution monitors, and docking stations.
Strengths
- MetaTrader’s Linux installer explicitly supports Fedora.
- thinkorswim lists Fedora among its supported Linux distributions.
- Current kernel, drivers, and desktop components can benefit modern hardware.
- Strong choice for experienced Linux desktop users.
Trade-offs
Fedora’s faster update cadence can introduce short-term changes to graphics, Java, Wine, desktop libraries, or device support. That is manageable if you use a maintenance window, keep a known-good kernel, and test the complete trading setup after updates. Do not perform a major upgrade immediately before an important market session.
Some vendor downloads are packaged primarily for Debian-based systems. If a required platform offers only a .deb, do not assume that converting packages will produce a supported installation. Check the vendor’s instructions or choose Ubuntu when official package compatibility is more important than newer system components.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →4. Debian 13 “Trixie”: Best for conservative stability
Choose Debian 13 if your priority is a restrained, long-lived system and your hardware is already well supported.
Debian 13 has a defined five-year lifecycle: full Debian support through August 9, 2028, followed by long-term support through June 30, 2030. TradingView provides a Debian-oriented .deb package, and MetaTrader’s installation script explicitly supports Debian.
Why it works well
- Long support period for a dedicated trading machine.
- Fewer major changes than a rolling distribution.
- Good fit for TradingView’s Debian package and supported MT5 installation.
- Appropriate for experienced users who value reproducibility.
What to consider
Debian’s possible weakness is hardware freshness, not an inherent inability to trade. New GPUs, Wi-Fi devices, docking stations, and displays may receive support later than on Fedora or Ubuntu hardware stacks. Vendor instructions may also be written for Ubuntu even when the application works on Debian.
Debian is a strong choice for a stable, carefully maintained trading computer, but less attractive if you have a brand-new laptop or depend on proprietary graphics and docking features that have not been tested.
See Debian’s current stable-release information for lifecycle details.
5. Kubuntu 24.04 LTS: Best for customizable multi-monitor workspaces
Choose Kubuntu 24.04 LTS if you want detailed control over windows, panels, shortcuts, workspaces, and monitor layouts.
Kubuntu combines an Ubuntu LTS base with KDE Plasma. That makes it useful for a workspace containing chart grids, order tickets, watchlists, news, terminals, and browser windows spread across several monitors.
Strengths
- Ubuntu LTS software and maintenance foundation.
- Highly configurable KDE Plasma window management.
- Useful workspace, shortcut, panel, and multi-monitor controls.
- Can generally follow Ubuntu-oriented package and compatibility guidance.
Limitations
Kubuntu is a workflow recommendation, not a claim of special market-data or execution performance. It is not separately identified in the main vendor support matrices, so its compatibility is inherited from the Ubuntu base rather than specially guaranteed for Kubuntu.
Recommended Free Tools
Test KDE, the chosen Wayland or X11 session, graphics drivers, monitor scaling, and your dock together. For TradingView’s Snap build, the documented Wayland caveat still matters. If your priority is the clearest official support path rather than workspace customization, choose standard Ubuntu.

Trading platform compatibility
| Platform | Linux status | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| TradingView web | Browser-based | Usually the lowest-maintenance route; verify broker integrations and browser behavior. |
| TradingView Desktop | Official Linux packages | Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, and 24.04 are officially tested. Prefer the .deb package on Debian-based systems; test X11 if the Snap build misbehaves on Wayland. |

| IBKR Desktop | Verify current Linux availability and feature set | May suit users who find TWS complex, but do not assume it has every TWS feature. |
| thinkorswim | Officially listed Linux distributions | Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, and RHEL are listed; Zulu OpenJDK is required. |
| MetaTrader 5 | Works through Wine | MetaTrader’s script supports Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, and Fedora. Test broker plugins, EAs, indicators, DLLs, and automation. |
| Windows-only broker software | Requires fallback | Use dual boot, a Windows virtual machine, or a remote Windows computer; do not make Linux your only access path until verified. |
Stocks, options, futures, and forex: what changes?
Stocks, options, and futures
Linux is most straightforward when your broker offers a complete web platform, TradingView integration, a native Linux application, or a documented thinkorswim installation. Interactive Brokers is particularly relevant because it provides a Linux version of TWS.
For large watchlists, options chains, several charts, and multiple order windows, system memory and monitor support matter more than whether you use Ubuntu, Mint, or Debian.
Forex
Forex trading can work well when your broker offers a web platform, TradingView integration, or MetaTrader 5. However, MT5 on Linux uses Wine. Manual charting may work reliably while a particular Expert Advisor, broker plugin, DLL, or bridge fails.

Hardware and network requirements
Interactive Brokers lists an Intel i5 as a minimum, an Intel i7 or better as recommended, 8 GB of RAM minimum, 16 GB recommended, and 2K minimum/recommended 4K display resolution in its published TWS requirements.
For a practical multi-window trading workstation, use:
- 16 GB RAM as the sensible baseline for serious trading with several browsers, charts, and platform windows.
- 32 GB RAM if you run multiple platform instances, virtual machines, local data tools, or extensive browser research.
- A supported x86-64 processor unless every required application explicitly supports another architecture.
- Tested graphics drivers, especially for multiple high-resolution monitors.
- Wired Ethernet where practical.
- A UPS for a desktop computer.
- Mobile backup internet and a second device for emergency account access.
- A recovery USB and a system image or snapshot.
These 16 GB and 32 GB figures are practical editorial guidance, not vendor minimums. Hardware load can affect local responsiveness, but a lightweight desktop does not prove lower execution latency. Internet routing, broker infrastructure, exchange and data-feed location, server distance, and connection quality are more important.

1. Inventory the workflow
Write down every required component before replacing Windows:
- Broker website and account type.
- TradingView web or Desktop.
- IBKR TWS or IBKR Desktop.
- thinkorswim.
- MetaTrader 5 and the exact broker server.
- Expert Advisors, indicators, DLLs, scripts, scanners, journals, and data tools.
- External monitors, docks, audio devices, smart-card or market-data hardware.
2. Test from a live USB
Confirm Wi-Fi, Ethernet, external displays, docking, graphics acceleration, sleep and wake, browser hardware acceleration, and monitor scaling. Download required installers before wiping the existing system.
3. Keep a recovery route
Retain the Windows installation or create a complete recovery image until Linux has passed demo-account testing. Enable full-disk encryption on a portable computer, but store recovery information securely.
4. Install platforms one at a time
Apply operating-system updates first, then install each platform from its official source. Launch applications outside market hours and record the operating-system, Java, Wine, graphics-driver, and platform versions.

TradingView notes
On Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, or Kubuntu, begin with the official Linux .deb package where possible. If the Snap build has rendering or launch problems, switch to an X11 session, try the .deb package, test the browser version, and check connectivity over IPv4.
Interactive Brokers TWS notes
IBKR offers production, updatable-stable, and offline-stable variants. Production and updatable-stable versions update automatically; offline-stable requires manual reinstallation for updates. Choose based on your tolerance for automatic changes, then test the selected version outside market hours.
IBKR notes that traders with more than 500 stock positions, 100 options positions, or more than 15 chart windows may need to increase TWS’s allocated memory to at least 2 GB. Close unused windows, reduce unnecessary data loads, or increase system RAM if TWS becomes slow.
MetaTrader 5 notes
MetaTrader documents the following Linux installation route:
wget https://download.terminal.free/cdn/web/metaquotes.software.corp/mt5/mt5linux.sh
chmod +x mt5linux.sh
./mt5linux.sh
After installation, test the broker login, symbols, live and historical charts, templates, indicators, Expert Advisors, DLL-dependent tools, notifications, economic calendar, automated trading, and reconnection after sleep or network loss.
thinkorswim notes
Use a listed Linux distribution, install the required Zulu OpenJDK version, and test the paper-trading environment. Verify Java, graphics, monitor scaling, launch behavior, and operation after reboot.
Common failures and recovery
TradingView launches but charts render incorrectly
Try an X11 session, especially with the Snap package on a Wayland desktop. Then try the official .deb package, the browser version, and temporary hardware-acceleration changes. If connection problems persist, test IPv4.
MT5 opens but an EA or indicator fails
Use a clean terminal, disable third-party plugins, reinstall the component inside the correct Wine environment, and test on a demo account. A Windows VM, remote Windows system, or broker VPS may be necessary for Windows-only DLLs and bridges.
TWS slows down with many windows
Check RAM, chart-window count, portfolio and options data, browser tabs, and TWS memory allocation. IBKR identifies at least 2 GB of TWS allocation as potentially necessary for large portfolios or more than 15 chart windows. A 16 GB or 32 GB computer is more appropriate than an 8 GB system for a heavy setup.
An update breaks the trading environment
- Keep a known-good kernel available.
- Use filesystem snapshots where appropriate.
- Maintain a bootable recovery USB.
- Store installation files and configuration notes offline.
- Record Java, Wine, graphics-driver, and platform versions.
- Never test a major distribution upgrade on the only machine used for live trading.
The internet fails while a position is open
Linux cannot solve an ISP, broker, or exchange outage. Keep mobile backup internet, a second device, browser access, broker phone-support details, and a documented emergency-close procedure. Know whether phone orders are available and whether fees apply.
When Linux is the wrong choice
Stay with Windows, use dual boot, or reserve Windows for the trading platform when:
- Your broker’s essential desktop application is Windows-only.
- Your Expert Advisors or data tools require unsupported DLLs or proprietary plugins.
- You need maximum vendor support and cannot troubleshoot Java, Wine, drivers, or desktop sessions.
- Your computer is the only emergency route to close positions.
- A specialized market-data feed, USB device, or automation bridge has not been tested on Linux.
A Windows virtual machine can help with occasional software, but it is less attractive for heavy multi-monitor use, graphics-intensive platforms, USB devices, or always-on automation. A remote Windows desktop or VPS can run a broker-supported platform continuously, but adds remote-access, security, provider, and emergency-connectivity risks. A browser-only setup is often the simplest Linux option when your broker provides complete web-based order management.
Final decision table
| Your situation | Choose |
|---|---|
| You use several platforms and want the safest default | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS |
| You are moving from Windows and want a familiar desktop | Linux Mint 22.x |
| You have recent hardware and prefer current software | Fedora Workstation |
| You want a conservative, long-lived installation | Debian 13 |
| You need extensive workspace and monitor customization | Kubuntu 24.04 LTS |
For most readers, install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, test the exact broker workflow in a demo account, and keep a fallback device or Windows installation until every required platform works reliably. Choose Mint instead when desktop familiarity is the main obstacle; choose another distribution only when its specific hardware, stability, or workflow advantages justify the additional compatibility testing.
