This is a historical 2022 comparison, not a current “best apps” ranking. The available evidence does not establish which exact five apps the original title intended, what their individual 2022 terms were, or which services are currently available. Rather than guess at a list or present old fees as live offers, this guide explains how to assess India’s BNPL products and what to verify before using one.
Why this 2022 list cannot be reproduced as a verified top five
Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is a category of short-term credit, not one standardized product. Providers have differed in where their credit can be used, how repayment is scheduled, and how their services are distributed. A marketplace pay-later facility, a merchant-specific option, and a service accepted by a broader set of merchants are not interchangeable.
HDFC Securities Research’s January 2022 report describes Indian BNPL models and historical offerings, including Flipkart PayLater and Paytm Postpaid. It does not establish a definitive five-app ranking or the complete offer terms behind this title. A separate study document hosted by NKC lists providers it considered for its own research, including Ola Postpaid, Paytm Postpaid, Amazon Pay Later, LazyPay, Slice, Simpl, FlexMoney, PostPe, EPayLater, ZestMoney, Unicard, and Capital Float. That is a study’s research scope—not a complete market census or a recommendation list.
Accordingly, the names and figures in those historical materials should not be treated as a verified top five or as current terms. No current, primary, app-comparable data establishes a “best” provider across the factors that matter to borrowers.

How to compare a BNPL offer before accepting it
Evaluate the actual credit offer shown to you, not just the app’s brand or “pay later” label. Save the offer screen and read the credit agreement and lender disclosures before confirming.
- Where it works: Check whether the facility is limited to one marketplace, selected merchants, or a wider network, and whether your intended purchase is eligible.
- When and how you repay: Identify the bill due date or each installment date, whether repayment is one bill or multiple installments, and whether any grace period is expressly stated.
- Total cost: Check interest, processing or convenience fees, late charges, and the total amount due. A “zero-cost” or “free” label does not by itself establish that no fees or penalties apply.
- Who lends: Find the regulated bank or non-banking financial company (NBFC) named in the agreement. An app or product brand is not necessarily the lender.
- What happens if you miss a payment: Read the agreement for late charges, credit-bureau reporting, collection practices, and the route for complaints.
- Whether you qualify and can still use it: Check current eligibility and availability for your account and location; a historical provider name does not establish a live service.
HDFC Securities Research’s 2022 report includes historical cost examples, but those are report-era illustrations, not current offers. Use the current agreement and disclosures for the specific transaction to determine what you will owe.

What RBI guidance means for borrowers
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says it issued digital-lending guidelines on September 2, 2022. In its August 8, 2024 statement, the RBI said the guidelines address customer interests, data privacy, interest-rate and recovery-practice concerns, and mis-selling. The RBI also announced a public repository intended to help customers verify whether a digital lending app is associated with a regulated entity.
Before applying, check the current RBI repository and compare the app’s claimed association with the lender named in its agreement and disclosures. Treat the app’s branding as distinct from the legal identity of the lender. The Ministry of Finance’s March 17, 2026 release also describes requirements for regulated entities and measures against unauthorized loan apps; it does not, by itself, verify the status of any particular BNPL service.

Are the apps named in older lists still available?
Historical lists cannot answer that reliably. A June 23, 2026 GrabOn article named LazyPay, Amazon Pay Later, Flipkart Pay Later, ICICI PayLater, and Paytm Postpaid as live, and said Simpl had shut down in September 2025. That is a dated secondary account, not independent confirmation from providers or the RBI repository. Verify a service’s status and lender relationship through current provider disclosures and official records before relying on it.

The evidence supports comparing BNPL offers by use scope, repayment schedule, full cost, lender identity, missed-payment consequences, and current access. It does not support ranking five apps or assigning “best” labels today. Choose only after checking the terms of the specific offer available to you, and avoid borrowing if the repayment schedule or total cost is unclear.
