The best side hustle is the one that fits your skills, available hours, equipment, and local demand—not necessarily the one with the biggest headline pay. These 35 ideas range from online services to local work, asset rentals, and resale. “For men” describes the audience in the title, not a restriction: none of these options is inherently limited to men.
“High paying” needs context. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) wage figures describe occupations overall, not what a part-time worker will earn per hour or keep after expenses and taxes. Use them as reference points, not promises. Before starting, estimate customer demand, startup costs, unpaid time, and any training, licensing, or insurance requirements.
How to choose a side hustle that can actually pay
For any idea, compare what it takes to get a first customer with what it takes to deliver the work. A service that looks lucrative on paper may be a poor fit if you need expensive equipment, cannot work at the times customers want, or spend hours traveling and finding clients.
- Start with what you already have: a marketable skill, relevant experience, equipment, workspace, or an asset you can rent out.
- Check local demand and rules: customer needs, licensing, insurance, and disposal requirements vary by location and type of work. Pay particular attention to regulated or safety-sensitive services.
- Calculate take-home economics: subtract supplies, platform fees, travel, maintenance, inventory, and other expenses from gross receipts. Include unpaid scheduling, marketing, waiting, and cleanup time, then account for taxes.
- Look for repeatability: recurring clients or a clear path to repeat sales can matter more than a high price for a single job.
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook describes occupations’ typical duties, work environments, training, median pay, and outlook; it can help you assess the work and preparation involved, but not predict your side-hustle income (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).

Online service side hustles
Online services can reduce commuting and let you serve clients beyond your immediate area, but finding clients and proving your work are often the first hurdles. A portfolio, sample project, subject knowledge, or clear service package can make it easier for prospective customers to assess what you offer.
1. Freelance web development
Build or maintain websites for small businesses. You need demonstrable technical ability and a portfolio; define whether a quote covers a new build, updates, hosting coordination, or ongoing maintenance.
2. Website and digital interface design
Design or improve page layouts, navigation, and usability. Show examples of your design work and explain what problem each project solved. The BLS reports a combined May 2025 median annual wage of $99,520 for web developers and digital designers; its detailed profiles give separate medians of $92,650 for web developers and $104,000 for web and digital interface designers. These are occupation-level U.S. figures, not freelance side-job rates (BLS: Web Developers and Digital Designers).
3. Technical writing
Turn specialized knowledge into manuals, guides, or other documentation. A useful advantage is familiarity with the subject matter as well as the ability to explain it clearly. The BLS May 2025 median annual wage for technical writers was $90,390 across the occupation, not a side-gig earnings estimate (BLS: Technical Writers).
4. Freelance writing and editing
Offer articles, copy, newsletters, or editing by project or retainer. A defined specialty and samples help clients judge fit; specify the deliverable, revision limits, and deadline before work begins. The BLS May 2025 median annual wage for writers and authors was $76,910 across the occupation, not a freelance rate (BLS: Writers and Authors).
5. Virtual bookkeeping
Organize transactions and prepare reports for clients remotely. Accuracy, trust, and relevant training matter because you may handle sensitive financial information. Agree on the records you will maintain and the work you will not perform.
6. Video editing
Edit short-form clips, marketing materials, or event footage. Editing skill and a portfolio are central; account for time spent on revisions, file transfers, and client feedback when pricing a project.
7. Graphic design
Create brand assets, presentations, and marketing materials. Show work relevant to the client’s needs and agree on deliverables and permitted use before starting.

8. Online tutoring
Teach a subject or help students prepare for exams. Demand and credential expectations differ by subject and location. The BLS May 2025 median annual wage for tutors was $43,350 across the occupation; it does not establish what a part-time online tutor will earn (BLS: Tutors).

9. Translation
Translate between languages in which you have strong fluency. Specialized subject knowledge can shape the work available. The BLS May 2025 median annual wage for interpreters and translators was $60,170 across the occupation, not a freelance translation rate (BLS: Interpreters and Translators).
10. Remote consulting
Sell expertise built through an existing professional background. Define a specific problem, scope, deliverables, and schedule so both sides know what a paid engagement includes.
Creative, teaching, and audience-based work
These options can draw on a creative skill or subject expertise. Teaching and client services can produce paid work once customers book; audience-based income usually depends on building reach and is less predictable.

Offer portraits, product images, event coverage, or real-estate photography. Equipment, editing, client acquisition, and usage rights all affect the work. BLS notes part-time work is common for photographers and schedules may vary. Its May 2025 median was $21.47 per hour, while the occupation’s median annual wage was $44,660; neither figure is a guaranteed side-hustle rate (BLS: Photographers).
12. Stock photography or video
License original images or footage. Sales are uncertain and depend on demand, discoverability, and rights to the material. Treat this as a longer-term possibility rather than dependable immediate income.
13. Music lessons
Teach an instrument or voice in person or online. Your ability to teach, suitable lesson space or equipment, and a reliable schedule can matter as much as performance skill.
14. Fitness coaching
Provide instruction within your qualifications and safety limits. Check applicable credential and insurance expectations, and do not offer medical advice beyond your competence. The BLS May 2025 median annual wage for fitness trainers and instructors was $47,160 across the occupation, not an independent coach’s expected earnings (BLS: Fitness Trainers and Instructors).

Build an audience around a useful subject and consider subscriptions or sponsorships. It takes time to attract and retain readers, and income is uncertain; validate interest before relying on this for near-term cash.
16. Podcast editing or production
Package audio or production skills as a service for existing shows. A recurring client arrangement may be possible, but define the number of episodes, revision rounds, and included production tasks.
17. Public speaking or workshop instruction
Offer a focused workshop to an organization or community group. Choose a subject you can teach credibly, and clarify audience, duration, materials, and fee with the host.
18. Test-preparation tutoring
Focus on a specific exam if you can demonstrate strong subject competence. Be clear about the exam covered and what students receive; demand and qualifications vary by subject and market.
Local services and skilled work
Local services can be easier to explain and sell to nearby customers, but travel, equipment, physical demands, scheduling, and local rules affect the real return. Confirm that you are qualified and permitted to do the work before advertising it.
19. Residential cleaning
Offer recurring home cleaning or move-out service. Include travel, supplies, labor, and the time required to reach each job when setting a price.
20. Lawn care and yard cleanup
Provide mowing or seasonal cleanup. Equipment, transport, weather, seasonality, and local disposal requirements can affect both costs and availability of work.
21. Pressure washing
Assess the surface, water access, and risk of damage before quoting. Use methods suitable for the material and carry appropriate coverage for the work you take on.
22. Handyman services
Stick to tasks allowed by local rules and within your demonstrated competence. State exactly what is included and do not imply you can perform regulated work without required qualifications.
23. Furniture assembly
Offer a clearly scoped, task-based service with appointment times that suit customers. Confirm the item, location, and any unusual requirements before accepting a job.
24. Painting
Take on small interior jobs or touch-ups. Estimate preparation, materials, travel, and cleanup time—not just the hours spent applying paint.

25. Mobile car detailing
Detail vehicles at a customer’s location. Plan for supplies, travel, water access, vehicle condition, and the time each service level requires.
26. Appliance repair
Repair work may require training, parts, safety precautions, and local licensing. Take jobs only when you can diagnose and complete them safely and lawfully.
27. Electrical work
This is not an appropriate casual paid gig for someone who is unqualified. The BLS says electricians typically learn through an apprenticeship and most states require licensing; check local rules and meet them before taking paid work (BLS: Electricians). The BLS May 2025 median annual wage for electricians was $63,190 across the occupation, not a rate for side jobs.
28. Event photography or videography
Quote the deliverables, editing hours, deposit, and usage rights clearly. Event work may involve deadlines and substantial editing after the event, so include that time when assessing the fee.

These ideas may be attractive if you already own a useful asset or can source goods at a sensible cost. They are not cost-free: maintenance, depreciation, insurance, platform access, fees, and time can reduce the return.

Check local rental rules, insurance, taxes, and operating costs before listing. Availability and occupancy should not be assumed, and gross rent is not net income.
30. Rent equipment you already own
Assess local demand and set clear terms for deposits, damage, maintenance, and liability. The economics are more favorable when you already own the equipment and can manage handoff and upkeep efficiently.
31. Rideshare driving
Compare gross receipts with vehicle expenses and unpaid waiting time. Fuel, maintenance, depreciation, and platform availability all affect whether the work is worthwhile.
32. Delivery driving
Include fuel, vehicle wear, maintenance, unpaid time, and app availability in your calculation. A busy period’s gross receipts alone do not show the net return.

34. Refurbish and resell furniture
Budget for materials, transport, workspace, and labor as well as the resale price. The time spent sourcing and moving pieces can be significant.
35. Make and sell a niche product
Validate buyer interest before investing heavily in inventory. Include production, packaging, shipping, platform fees, and the time needed to handle orders.
What U.S. wage figures do—and do not—tell you
BLS median wages are useful context for occupations, not a forecast for a side hustle. The May 2025 medians below are U.S. occupation-level figures. They do not show how quickly a part-time worker will find customers, how many hours they will work, what local demand is, or what remains after expenses and taxes. The BLS provides more detail about the occupations in its Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Taxes and records for a U.S. side hustle
The IRS says gig income must be reported, including income from temporary or side work and income earned even if you do not receive an information return. Its current guidance says a tax return is required when net earnings from self-employment reach $400, and independent contractors may need to make estimated tax payments. Keep records of income, receipts, sales, and expenses; consult current IRS guidance for your circumstances (IRS Gig Economy Tax Center).
For tax years 2025–2028, current IRS guidance describes changes that include a qualified tips deduction for eligible workers and a restored third-party payment reporting threshold of more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. That Form 1099-K reporting threshold does not decide whether income is taxable or reportable. Eligibility and tax treatment depend on current IRS rules.
The IRS also says certain business-use property, including vehicles or computers acquired after January 19, 2025, may qualify for 100% bonus depreciation if requirements are met, including business use exceeding 50%. This is not a blanket deduction for every purchase; check the IRS rules before claiming it.
How to spot a side-hustle scam
Be cautious when an offer promises unusually high pay for little work, pressures you to accept immediately, or asks you to pay upfront for training, expenses, or access to a job. The Federal Trade Commission advises: “Be wary of ads promising ‘fast cash’ for ‘minimal work.’” Research an unfamiliar company and look for accounts from current or former workers before accepting (FTC: How to avoid a side hustle scam).
In a task scam, an unexpected message may offer simple online work such as “optimization” or “product boosting.” A small initial payment can build trust before the scammer asks you to deposit money—often cryptocurrency—to unlock supposed earnings. Do not pay money to get paid (FTC: Task scams create the illusion of making money).
