3 Best No-Exam Life Insurance of 2025: Best for Term Coverage, Speed and Guaranteed Acceptance

Pacific Life, Symetra and Mutual of Omaha lead this category-based comparison of no-exam life insurance for term coverage, speed and guaranteed-issue final expenses.

The best no-exam life insurance depends on what you are trying to protect. For substantial income-replacement term coverage, this 2025-edition review selects Pacific Life PL Promise Term as the best overall option. Symetra SwiftTerm is the better choice when a fast online decision matters most. For older applicants who need a small permanent benefit and cannot qualify medically, Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life is the strongest guaranteed-acceptance option.

Those products are not interchangeable. A term policy that may provide millions of dollars without a traditional paramedical exam is designed for mortgages, dependents and lost income. A guaranteed-issue whole life policy with a $25,000 maximum is primarily designed for burial and other final expenses.

Our three best no-exam life insurance picks

These selections are category-based rather than a claim that one policy is universally best. The comparison considers the purpose of the coverage, the size of the benefit available through a no-exam pathway, eligibility, speed, conversion flexibility and the trade-offs created by limited underwriting.

#1 Best Overall

  • SMART DUAL-ZONE STORAGE: Measuring 31.3 x 23.5 cm (12.3 x 9.3 in), this folder includes 4 vertical pockets for Letter and A4 documents without folding, plus 6 small A5-size pockets measuring 15 x 23.5 cm (5.9 x 9.3 in) for passports, tickets, photos, gift cards, and other valuables. Provider and policy Best for No-exam method Coverage and eligibility Duration Main caution
Pacific Life PL Promise Term Best overall no-exam term life Accelerated underwriting for eligible applicants Up to $3 million through the accelerated pathway for eligible applicants generally ages 18 through 60; $50,000 minimum face amount 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years The insurer may move an applicant to modified or traditional underwriting, including an exam
Symetra SwiftTerm Fastest decision for qualified applicants Instant decision, accelerated underwriting or full underwriting $100,000 to $5 million product range; minimum issue age 20; maximum age varies by term and nicotine status 10, 15, 20 or 30 years The advertised 18-minute result applies only to qualified cases; some applicants need an exam
Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life Guaranteed acceptance and final expenses Guaranteed issue; no exam and no health questions Generally ages 45 through 85; $2,000 to $25,000; Washington has a $5,000 minimum and New York has different eligibility rules Permanent whole life coverage Low coverage ceiling and potentially high cost per dollar; read the contract for graded or limited benefits

Coverage maximums, age limits and pathways are subject to health, amount, nicotine status, state and policy-specific rules. A product maximum is not a promise that an applicant will receive that amount without an exam.

1. Pacific Life PL Promise Term: best overall no-exam term life

Pacific Life PL Promise Term is the strongest general-purpose pick for a younger or middle-aged applicant who wants a meaningful death benefit, level premiums and the possibility of converting later. Its Pacific Accelerated Life+ pathway can provide up to $3 million without a medical exam for eligible applicants ages 18 through 60 who qualify for Standard or better underwriting.

The policy offers level-premium periods of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years. It also has a $50,000 minimum death benefit, making it more appropriate for ordinary family-protection needs than a small final-expense policy. The product page explains the available PL Promise Term features, while Pacific Life’s underwriting page describes the accelerated, modified and traditional pathways.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it stands out

  • High no-exam potential: Up to $3 million is substantially more than the limit on most guaranteed-issue policies.
  • Useful term choices: The 25-year option can be helpful for parents who want coverage through a child’s dependency years but do not need a 30-year term.
  • Conversion flexibility: Pacific Life advertises conversion to PL Promise Conversion UL without additional underwriting during the level-premium period, subject to the policy provisions.
  • Potentially competitive pricing: A healthy applicant who qualifies for accelerated underwriting may receive pricing closer to fully underwritten term insurance than to simplified-issue coverage.

What can go wrong

No exam is a qualification outcome, not an automatic feature for every applicant. Pacific Life may use accelerated underwriting, but an application can be routed to modified or traditional underwriting if the available information does not support an accelerated decision or falls outside the insurer’s rules. Traditional underwriting may require a paramedical exam, blood or urine testing and medical records.

Do not treat the $3 million figure or the 18-to-60 age range as universal. The accelerated pathway has its own eligibility criteria, and state availability and policy forms can differ. Pacific Life’s underwriting guide should be checked alongside the policy materials.

2. Symetra SwiftTerm: best for speed

Symetra SwiftTerm is a good fit for an applicant who values a quick online decision and accepts that the insurer may ask for more information later. Symetra says qualified applicants may receive instant coverage in as little as 18 minutes. Other applications may go through accelerated underwriting and take one to three days, while some are sent to full underwriting and may require a medical exam.

SwiftTerm offers 10-, 15-, 20- and 30-year terms, with coverage from $100,000 to $5 million. The minimum issue age is 20, but the maximum issue age depends on the selected term and the applicant’s nicotine status. The insurer’s SwiftTerm product page provides the current decision-path description and eligibility details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it stands out

  • Multiple speed tracks: A qualified case may receive an immediate decision, while other cases can still be reviewed through accelerated underwriting.
  • Large term limits: The product range reaches $5 million, although the amount approved without an exam depends on the applicant and underwriting pathway.
  • Online convenience: It is designed for applicants who want to complete much of the process digitally rather than schedule an initial appointment.

What the 18-minute claim does not mean

An 18-minute result is not a guaranteed approval time, an assurance of exam-free underwriting or a promise that every applicant will receive coverage. It applies to qualified cases. Symetra’s process can also result in accelerated review or full underwriting.

Separate these four events: an online quote, an application submitted, an approval decision and an issued policy that is in force. Even an instant decision does not eliminate the need to review the final contract, pay the required premium and confirm the effective date.

3. Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life: best for guaranteed acceptance and final expenses

Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life addresses a different problem. The product requires no medical exam and no health questions. It is generally available to applicants ages 45 through 85 and offers $2,000 to $25,000 of permanent coverage. Mutual of Omaha lists different rules for some states: Washington has a $5,000 minimum, and New York has different eligibility requirements.

Valardoh Premium Car Registration and Insurance Card Holder, Car Document Holder for Cards, Driver License & other Essential Documents (Pink)
  • 【HIGH QUALITY】: made of premium PU leather and durable vinyl PVC, strong and firm enough for your long-term use.
  • 【SAFE PROTECTION】: this insurance card holder keeps your document free from tearing, bending or being ruined by moisture.
  • 【TIME SAVER】: clear inner pouches design helps you identify the correct document quickly with one glance.
  • 【WIDE RANGE OF USES】: can store your bills, insurance cards, vehicle registration and other essential paperwork.
  • 【SPECIAL GIFT】: beautiful sleek and trim design. This car document holder is a good gift for yourself, your lover, friends and family.

This can be appropriate for an older applicant who has been declined elsewhere or who wants a modest benefit for funeral costs, small debts or a limited legacy. Premiums do not increase, according to the product materials, and the coverage is intended to remain in force as long as the policy requirements are met.

Why it stands out

  • Guaranteed-issue structure: Eligible applicants generally do not have to prove that they are healthy.
  • Permanent benefit: Unlike term insurance, the policy is designed to last for life rather than expire after a selected term.
  • Simple purpose: The benefit can be sized around final expenses instead of a complicated income-replacement calculation.

Why it is not a substitute for large term insurance

A $25,000 maximum will not replace years of income, pay off a typical mortgage or fund a dependent’s education. Guaranteed-issue policies also tend to cost more per dollar of coverage because the insurer receives little or no health information. Some policies use a graded or limited death benefit for certain causes or during an early period; the exact restrictions depend on the policy form and state.

Do not assume that every guaranteed-issue policy has the same waiting period. Read the contract and ask the insurer how the death benefit works during the early policy years before buying.

Best alternative for younger online term buyers: Nationwide Life Essentials

If a comparison is limited to mainstream no-exam term insurance rather than including a guaranteed-issue final-expense policy, Nationwide Life Essentials is a strong alternative. Nationwide says applicants ages 21 through 55 can apply online for 10- or 20-year term coverage from $250,000 to $1.5 million without a medical exam.

Its narrower age, term and coverage ranges make it less flexible than Pacific Life or Symetra for some shoppers. It may nevertheless be a practical option for a younger buyer whose need fits a 10- or 20-year term and who wants a fully digital application. See Nationwide’s term-life page and its product announcement for the advertised eligibility details.

What no-exam life insurance actually means

No exam does not mean no underwriting. In life insurance, the phrase usually means that the insurer will not require a traditional paramedical appointment with a nurse or technician to collect fluids and record measurements. The insurer may still evaluate health and lifestyle risk extensively.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains that accelerated underwriting can use prescription history, motor-vehicle records, Medical Information Bureau data, electronic health information, public or financial records and predictive models. If those sources are incomplete, inconsistent or outside the insurer’s rules, the applicant may be moved into traditional underwriting.

The three categories are different

Category What the applicant usually provides Can the insurer decline? Typical trade-off
Accelerated underwriting Health and lifestyle answers plus authorization for external-data checks; the exam and fluids may be waived Yes Can offer large coverage and pricing close to fully underwritten insurance, but eligibility is selective
Simplified issue Health questions, usually without a physical exam; the insurer may check prescriptions, driving and other records Yes Usually faster and easier than traditional underwriting, but limits may be lower and premiums higher
Guaranteed issue Usually an application, age and residency information and payment details, with no health questions or exam Generally not if the applicant meets the product’s eligibility requirements Permanent but modest benefits, higher cost per dollar and possible graded or limited early benefits

A fast quote is not the same as simplified issue, and simplified issue is not the same as guaranteed issue. Check the actual underwriting path in the application and policy documents.

How much no-exam coverage do you need?

Start with the financial obligation the death benefit must cover, not with the largest amount an insurer advertises. A practical estimate can include:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Income replacement: Estimate how much income dependents would need and for how many years.
  • Debts: Include a mortgage, student loans, personal loans and other obligations that should not fall on survivors.
  • Child-care and education: Add the cost of replacing unpaid caregiving and any education funding goal.
  • Existing resources: Subtract savings, investments and current individual life insurance that would be available to the family.
  • Employer coverage: Count group life insurance cautiously because it may be tied to employment, may not be portable and may be too small for the household’s needs.
  • Final expenses: Include funeral costs and small debts even when the main purpose is income replacement.
  • Inflation and the term: A 20-year need and a 30-year need are not interchangeable. Consider how inflation could affect future expenses.

For example, replacing $75,000 of annual household income for 15 years produces a simple $1.125 million starting point before adding debts and education costs or subtracting savings and existing coverage. It is only a framework, not a universal recommendation. A $25,000 guaranteed-issue policy could be sensible for final expenses but plainly inadequate for that income-replacement need.

Is no-exam life insurance more expensive?

Not necessarily. A healthy applicant who qualifies for accelerated underwriting may receive pricing close to a fully underwritten term policy because the insurer can still assess risk through data and models. Simplified-issue coverage generally costs more because the insurer receives less information. Guaranteed-issue coverage usually has the highest cost per dollar because the insurer accepts applicants without health questions.

Rates cannot be compared meaningfully without the applicant’s age, rating basis, tobacco status, health class, coverage amount, term, state and product. Avoid relying on a generic price labeled “starting at.”

Illustrative benchmark, not a quote: Forbes Advisor reported average monthly premiums for healthy applicants buying $500,000 of no-exam term insurance of approximately $14, $20 and $30 for 10-, 20- and 30-year terms at age 30, and approximately $19, $29 and $49 at age 40. These figures are a benchmark from Forbes’s methodology, not current personalized quotes and not necessarily 2025 prices. See the Forbes Advisor methodology before using any published rate comparison.

How to compare no-exam policies

Compare the final offers from at least three actual issuing insurers, not just the speed or the first online estimate. Check:

  1. Issuing company: Identify the licensed insurer named on the policy. An online agency, broker, administrator or technology platform may not be the company that underwrites the risk or pays the claim.
  2. Final premium and underwriting class: Compare the price after underwriting, not the initial quote. Confirm whether the offer is preferred, standard, rated or otherwise modified.
  3. Benefit and term: Make sure the final death benefit and level-premium period match the financial need.
  4. Conversion rights: Determine whether term coverage can be converted to permanent insurance without new medical underwriting, the deadline for conversion and which permanent products are available.
  5. Renewal costs: Find out what happens after the level term ends. Annual-renewal premiums can rise sharply even when the policy remains renewable.
  6. Riders and exclusions: Review optional benefits, activity or travel provisions and any exclusions in the actual policy form.
  7. Contestability and suicide provisions: Read the contract for the applicable provisions and time periods rather than relying on a sales summary.
  8. Effective date: Confirm when the policy becomes in force, what payment is required and whether a conditional receipt provides temporary protection.
  9. State-specific terms: Verify that the product, riders, face amount, age range and term are available in your state.

For carrier research, the NAIC recommends looking at complaints, financial condition and premiums rather than relying on one metric. Its Consumer Insurance Search guidance explains how to research complaints. Financial-strength ratings are also only a snapshot. For historical context, AM Best affirmed Pacific Life’s A+ Financial Strength Rating on December 11, 2025, and affirmed Symetra’s A rating on May 22, 2025. Confirm any rating again because ratings can change, and check the issuing company rather than the brand or sales platform: Pacific Life at AM Best and Symetra’s AM Best announcement.

How the application works

  1. Estimate the need. Add income replacement, debts, mortgage, child-care, education and final expenses, then subtract dependable savings and existing coverage.
  2. Choose term or permanent insurance. Term is usually the more efficient starting point for a large, time-limited family-protection need. Permanent coverage may be relevant for a lifelong estate or final-expense need.
  3. Compare actual carriers. Use several quotes, but note the company that will issue each policy.
  4. Answer the health questionnaire accurately. Questions may cover diagnoses, medications, nicotine, alcohol, driving history, hazardous activities, foreign travel, occupation and prior applications.
  5. Authorize data checks. No-exam underwriting commonly uses prescription and other external information even when there is no physical appointment.
  6. Wait for the underwriting result. The outcome may be instant approval, an accelerated review that needs clarification or records, or traditional underwriting that requires an exam.
  7. Review the offer. Check the premium, health class, benefit amount, term, riders, exclusions, conversion rights, owner and beneficiaries.
  8. Confirm issuance and payment. A quote or submitted application is not necessarily an issued policy. Confirm that the first premium has been paid and that coverage is in force.
  9. Use the free-look period. Review the delivered contract promptly and confirm the cancellation period that applies in your state.
  10. Maintain the policy. Keep beneficiaries, address, payment information and policy records current. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide provides additional consumer guidance.

What if the insurer asks for a medical exam?

An exam request usually means the application did not qualify for the accelerated or simplified pathway. It is not automatically a rejection. The insurer may need more information to verify the health answers, resolve conflicting data or evaluate an amount or medical history outside its no-exam rules.

You generally have three practical choices:

  • Complete the exam: This may preserve the application and could produce a better offer than abandoning it.
  • Ask about another product: A carrier may have a different underwriting route or a lower amount that fits a simplified-issue option.
  • Compare another insurer: Different companies evaluate the same medical history differently, although no carrier should be assumed to offer guaranteed approval for a large benefit.

Be careful about withdrawing and repeatedly submitting applications. Prior applications, declines and other insurance activity may be relevant to later underwriting. Do not conceal a prior application or medical information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health conditions, smoking and no-exam coverage

No-exam insurance is not specifically reserved for people with serious health conditions. Many high-limit accelerated programs are designed for applicants whose risk can be assessed reliably from available data. A complicated or poorly documented medical history may make an exam request, surcharge, lower benefit or decline more likely.

Smokers and nicotine users may still qualify, but nicotine status can affect premiums, age limits and the underwriting path. Diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions are evaluated individually. Controlled conditions do not guarantee approval, and a no-exam application should never be treated as a way to avoid disclosing them.

Platforms, brokers and insurers are not the same thing

Digital shopping can make applications easier, but the website a consumer uses may not be the insurer. Ask which licensed company will issue the policy, because that company controls the underwriting decision, premium schedule, exclusions, contract terms and claims process.

Ladder’s help center says applications up to $3 million generally may not require a health check, but health questions remain and larger amounts or certain profiles may require one. These are useful comparison channels, not proof that every applicant will receive the advertised maximum without an exam.

Why online rankings disagree

Different comparison sites can reasonably select different winners because they use different applicant profiles and scoring criteria. Policygenius’s 2025 comparison separates categories such as cheapest, best term, best for seniors and best for young adults. Forbes Advisor’s methodology weighs factors including rates, complaints, conversion rights, maximum no-exam coverage and maximum eligible age. NerdWallet’s comparison emphasizes another group of companies and products.

The important question is not which list has the most authoritative-sounding winner. It is whether the product matches the reader’s purpose: large term coverage, speed, guaranteed acceptance or permanent final-expense protection.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming no exam means no underwriting: Health questions and data checks can still be extensive.
  • Comparing a $3 million term policy with a $25,000 final-expense policy as though they serve the same purpose: They do not.
  • Taking an instant decision as proof that coverage is active: Confirm issue, payment and the effective date.
  • Using a generic starting price: Rates depend on age, health, nicotine, term, benefit, state and underwriting class.
  • Choosing guaranteed issue too early: A healthy applicant may obtain substantially more protection at a lower cost through medically underwritten or accelerated term insurance.
  • Ignoring conversion rights: A term policy convertible without new medical underwriting can be valuable if health worsens later.
  • Assuming an employer policy is enough: Group coverage may end with employment, may not be portable and may not cover the household’s full need.
  • Assuming nationwide availability: State rules can change the issuing company, riders, age limits, terms and face amounts.
  • Misrepresenting health information: An inaccurate application can jeopardize coverage and a future claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really buy life insurance without a medical exam?

Yes. Accelerated and simplified-issue policies may waive the traditional paramedical exam, while guaranteed-issue policies generally require neither an exam nor health questions. The first two categories still involve underwriting and can result in an exam request or decline.

Can I get $1 million of life insurance without an exam?

Possibly, depending on age, health, state, policy and underwriting data. Pacific Life advertises up to $3 million through an accelerated pathway for eligible applicants, and Symetra SwiftTerm has a product range up to $5 million, but neither figure guarantees exam-free approval for every applicant. Nationwide advertises no-exam term coverage up to $1.5 million for eligible applicants ages 21 through 55.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is no-exam life insurance more expensive?

It depends on the underwriting category. A healthy applicant qualifying for accelerated underwriting may receive pricing close to fully underwritten term insurance. Simplified issue and guaranteed issue generally cost more per dollar because the insurer receives less health information.

Can smokers qualify for no-exam life insurance?

Some can, but nicotine status affects the rate and may affect age eligibility or the underwriting path. A smoker may receive an exam request, a higher premium or a different offer. The application must accurately disclose nicotine use.

Can someone with diabetes or high blood pressure qualify without an exam?

Possibly, but the result is individualized. Controlled conditions do not guarantee approval, and a complex medical history can make an exam, medical records, a surcharge, a lower benefit or a decline more likely.

Does no exam mean the insurer will not check my medical records?

No. No-exam underwriting may use health questions, prescription history, Medical Information Bureau data, electronic health information, motor-vehicle records and other external data. It means no traditional paramedical exam, not no health review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the insurer asks for an exam after advertising no exam?

Treat it as a change in underwriting path, not necessarily a rejection. You can complete the exam, ask whether another product or lower amount is available, or compare another carrier. Disclose the request and any application outcome accurately on future applications.

Is guaranteed-issue life insurance worth buying?

It can be useful for an older applicant who needs a small permanent benefit and cannot qualify for medically underwritten coverage. It is usually a poor substitute for income-replacement term insurance because coverage is limited and the cost per dollar can be high. Review any graded or limited early death benefit in the contract.

Does every guaranteed-issue policy have a two-year waiting period?

No universal waiting-period rule should be assumed. Benefit restrictions vary by product, cause of death, state and policy form. Read the contract and ask the insurer how the benefit works during the early policy years.

Can I convert no-exam term life to permanent insurance?

Some term policies include conversion rights, but they vary by product and contract. Pacific Life specifically advertises conversion of PL Promise Term to PL Promise Conversion UL without additional underwriting during the level-premium period, subject to policy provisions. Confirm the deadline, available permanent products and cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is employer-sponsored life insurance enough?

Not automatically. Employer coverage may be tied to the job, may not be portable and may be too small to replace income, pay debts or support dependents. Treat it as part of the coverage calculation and verify what happens if employment ends.

Does a no-exam policy work in every state?

Not necessarily. State availability can affect the issuing company, riders, age limits, terms, minimums and maximums. Mutual of Omaha, for example, lists different rules for New York and Washington. Confirm availability in your state before applying.

What happens if I lie on a life insurance application?

An inaccurate answer can lead to a changed offer, cancellation or a denied claim, depending on the facts and applicable law and policy provisions. Answer every health, nicotine, driving and prior-insurance question completely and accurately.

How soon does coverage begin?

The timeline can include a quote, application submission, approval, policy issue, first premium payment and the effective date. An instant decision does not always mean the policy is already in force. Confirm the issued policy, payment status and coverage date in writing.

The Bottom Line

Choose Pacific Life PL Promise Term if you need substantial, level-premium term coverage and may qualify for accelerated underwriting. Choose Symetra SwiftTerm if the fastest possible online decision is your priority and you accept that the insurer may request an exam. Choose Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life when guaranteed acceptance and a modest permanent final-expense benefit matter more than coverage efficiency.

Before applying, calculate the actual financial need, compare the final offers from multiple issuing insurers, disclose your health accurately and verify the policy’s state-specific terms. The phrase “no exam” removes one part of the process; it does not remove underwriting.
