2. Selected work, not a project dump
Choose two to five strong case studies and a few supporting samples. A recruiter often needs fast evidence of scope and outcomes; a prospective client may need more information about process, industries, and trust.
3. Context and attribution
Every case study should identify the client or project context, problem, objective, audience, your role, strategy, deliverables, execution, results, and lessons. On team projects, separate the team objective from the decisions and deliverables you personally owned.
4. Credible proof
Proof is strongest when it follows this rough hierarchy: verified business outcomes; contextualized campaign metrics; public work samples; before-and-after comparisons; testimonials; named responsibilities; process artifacts; and, finally, general claims or credentials.
For metrics, include the time range, baseline or comparison period, channel, goal, attribution limitations, and your individual contribution.
5. A clear conversion path
Offer at least one low-friction next step: email, form, LinkedIn, calendar booking, resume download, or agency inquiry. Do not bury contact information behind several menus.
6. Usability and accessibility
Readable contrast, descriptive image alternatives, keyboard-friendly navigation, restrained motion, responsive layouts, and clear headings matter more than visual novelty. Do not claim a site is accessible or fast without testing it.
7. Maintenance
Review the portfolio quarterly. Check links, contact details, dates, testimonials, client permissions, embedded social posts, obsolete services, and mobile presentation.
What to include in your own marketing portfolio
Homepage
State your specialty, audience, outcome, and strongest proof. Make the primary action obvious.
Work page
Use project cards that identify the client or project, industry, role, service, deliverable, and one-line outcome.
Case studies
Use the sequence: context, problem, objective, audience, role, strategy, deliverables, execution, results, and lessons. If the result is unavailable, explain what evidence you can show instead.
About page
Include your current specialty, relevant experience, industries, working style, location or time zone when useful, and a resume link.
Contact page
Offer email, a form, LinkedIn, a calendar, or another realistic route. A portfolio that cannot be acted upon is only a showcase.
How to build a portfolio without confidential data
- Replace a client name with a description such as “B2B SaaS company” or “regional healthcare provider.”
- Use percentage changes instead of absolute revenue when permitted.
- Show redacted screenshots and explain what has been removed.
- Describe methodology without revealing proprietary targeting or customer data.
- Use public campaigns and clearly explain your role.
- Include personal experiments with dates, hypotheses, methods, and limitations.
- Use mock briefs or speculative campaigns, explicitly labeled as hypothetical.
- Ask former clients or employers for permission to publish selected work.
- Separate public work from “private case studies available on request.”
Never imply that a speculative campaign produced real commercial results.
How to create a marketing portfolio with no professional experience
You do not need famous clients to demonstrate marketing ability. Build three to five clearly labeled projects:
- Personal growth experiment: Document the goal, channel, hypothesis, execution, data, and what you learned.
- Mock campaign: Choose a real or invented brief and label the work speculative.
- Volunteer project: Explain the organization’s need, your deliverables, and any measurable change.
- Coursework: Show the brief and finished deliverable rather than merely listing the class.
- Brand teardown: Analyze a real brand and propose improvements, without suggesting the brand adopted them.
Choosing a platform for your portfolio
Choose the tool after deciding what evidence you need to present. A paid builder cannot fix vague positioning, weak case studies, or missing proof.
| Need | Good direction | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fast beginner launch | Wix or Squarespace | Less portability and recurring platform costs |
| Visual motion | Framer | More limited CMS complexity on lower plans |
| Detailed design control | Webflow | Steeper learning curve |
| Writing and published work | Journo Portfolio | Less suited to motion-heavy or complex agency work |
| Creative project gallery | Carbonmade or a visual-first builder | May provide less depth for SEO and strategy case studies |
| Maximum ownership | Self-hosted or static site | More setup and maintenance responsibility |
Wix
Wix suits beginners and freelancers who want templates, forms, SEO features, galleries, hosting, and social integrations. Its pricing page displayed a free tier and U.S.-reference paid prices of approximately $17.77 per month for Light, $29.77 for Core, $39.77 for Business, and $159.77 for Business Elite in the captured page view. Wix says prices vary by location, are based on yearly subscriptions paid in full, exclude applicable taxes, and should be confirmed at checkout. See Wix’s official plans page.
Framer
Framer is a strong fit for design-led personal portfolios and interaction-heavy presentations. Its pricing page listed Free, Basic at $10 per month, Pro at $30 per month, and custom Enterprise pricing in the referenced view. Pricing depends on billing cycle and tax. Basic includes a custom-domain connection, two CMS collections, 50 GB bandwidth, and built-in SEO; Pro expands site and CMS capabilities. Confirm current terms at Framer’s pricing page.
Webflow
Webflow suits designers and agencies that need granular layout control, responsive design, and structured content. It separates free Workspace access from paid Site plans, with differences in CMS, bandwidth, and branding. Confirm the current plan table at Webflow’s official pricing page.
Squarespace
Squarespace is a reasonable direction for writers, consultants, and personal brands that value polished templates and managed hosting. Its templates, galleries, video backgrounds, responsive editing, and customization options are frequently highlighted in portfolio coverage. Confirm current pricing directly before subscribing; a free-forever tier, extensive plugin ecosystem, or maximum hosting portability may not be the right fit.
Recommended Free Tools
Journo Portfolio
Journo Portfolio fits content marketers, copywriters, journalists, and communications professionals with many published links. Its marketing examples directory shows how work can be organized by type and topic. It is less suitable for highly interactive, video-heavy, or dashboard-oriented portfolios.
Carbonmade
Carbonmade fits visual creatives, advertising art directors, and campaign portfolios where imagery and video are central proof. It is less appropriate when your value depends on detailed SEO, growth, analytics, or strategic explanations.
Marketing portfolio checklist
- Can a visitor identify your specialty and target audience within five seconds?
- Does the homepage provide a clear next action?
- Are your best two to five projects easy to find?
- Does each case study explain the problem, role, process, deliverables, and outcome?
- Are metrics tied to a timeframe, baseline, channel, and contribution?
- Are personal, student, AI-assisted, and speculative projects labeled?
- Have you separated team results from your individual contribution?
- Are client names, logos, screenshots, and testimonials authorized?
- Can visitors reach you without creating an account or navigating multiple layers?
- Does the site work on mobile and with keyboard navigation?
- Are contrast, image descriptions, headings, and motion handled responsibly?
- Have you checked links, embeds, resume downloads, and contact forms?
- Is the portfolio still accurate for the role or clients you want next?
Update the site at least quarterly. The strongest portfolio is not necessarily the most elaborate one; it is the one that makes relevant work, credible evidence, and the next step easy to understand.
