The original U.S. settlement contemplated a fund of $30 million to $50 million. After 23andMe entered bankruptcy, the court approved a final settlement amount of approximately $46.75 million on July 7, 2026. The settlement administrator expects payments to be distributed in September 2026.
The standard claim deadline was February 17, 2026, and the deadline to cure claim deficiencies was June 12, 2026. Both have passed, so people who did not file a timely claim generally cannot submit a new one now.
What happened in the 23andMe data breach?
23andMe announced the cyberattack on October 6, 2023. The incident involved information associated with customers whose accounts were accessed or compromised. Depending on the individual, the information could have included:
- Name, date of birth and sex
- Genetic information and ancestry reports
- Genetic-relative relationship predictions
- Ancestors’ birth locations and family names
- Family-tree and profile information
- Geographic-location information
This was not simply a conventional password or credit-card incident. Genetic and ancestry data can be highly sensitive and may reveal information about relatives and family relationships. The settlement materials describe categories of information that could have been involved; that does not mean every affected person had every category of data downloaded.

Why did earlier reports say $30 million?
The $30 million figure came from the original settlement structure. The proposed fund was described as ranging from $30 million to $50 million, depending on the circumstances specified in the agreement and the claims process.
That litigation became more complicated after 23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2025. The breach-related claims were addressed through the bankruptcy-related process, and the company’s assets were later sold. The former 23andMe entities changed their legal names to Chrome Holding Co. and ChromeCo, Inc., although the settlement website continues to use “23andMe” for familiarity.
The court granted final approval on January 30, 2026, and approved a final amount of approximately $46.75 million on July 7, 2026. Therefore, “23andMe to pay $30 million” describes an earlier stage of the case—not the current final approved amount.

Who was eligible?
A person generally qualified as a U.S. settlement-class member if they:
- Were a 23andMe customer between May 1, 2023, and October 1, 2023;
- Resided in the United States during that period; and
- Received notice from 23andMe that their personal information was compromised.
Being a former 23andMe customer alone did not guarantee eligibility or payment. People who pursued arbitration, filed certain bankruptcy proofs of claim, or exercised related rights may be treated differently under the settlement documents. People who opted out may have preserved certain litigation rights but would not receive settlement benefits; the opt-out deadline has also passed.
The settlement releases covered claims for people who participate in the settlement or remain bound by it. Anyone with unusual circumstances should review the court-authorized documents or consult a lawyer rather than assume that the general class description resolves their situation.

How much could a claimant receive?
| Benefit | Amount or term | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Extraordinary claim | Up to $10,000 | Requires an eligible, documented loss; the maximum is not automatic |
| Health Information Claim | Up to $165 | Subject to the settlement’s eligibility and allocation rules |
| Statutory cash claim | Estimated at about $100 | An estimate, not a guaranteed payment; depends on eligibility and the net fund |
| Privacy & Medical Shield + Genetic Monitoring | Five years | A noncash benefit requiring enrollment under the settlement terms |
The amounts above are ceilings or estimates. Actual payments can depend on the number of valid claims, the type of claim, documentation, administrative expenses, attorneys’ fees, service awards and the amount ultimately available for distribution.
The settlement materials contemplated requests for attorneys’ fees of up to 25% of the settlement fund, expenses of up to $500,000 and service awards of up to $1,000 for each class representative. Those were requests subject to court review—not amounts automatically deducted in every case.
The five-year monitoring benefit is not a cash substitute. It may include services such as identity-theft protection, medical-data monitoring, VPN and password-protection features, dark-web monitoring, a digital vault, data-broker opt-out tools, breach scanning and anti-phishing protection, according to the settlement materials. Eligible claimants who enrolled should check their official settlement communications before paying separately for overlapping services.
Can you still file a claim?
Generally, no. The standard claim deadline was February 17, 2026. The deadline to correct or cure deficiencies in a previously submitted claim was June 12, 2026. Both deadlines have passed.

The settlement administrator says distributions are expected in September 2026. That is an expected distribution period, not a guarantee that every claimant will receive money on the same date.
Individual timing may vary based on the payment method selected, claim review, address or payment-information problems and the settlement administrator’s processing. Final approval occurred on January 30, 2026; the final amount was approved on July 7, 2026; and September 2026 is the current expected distribution period.

Does deleting a 23andMe account undo the breach?
No. Deleting an account cannot reverse information that was already accessed or compromised. It may affect data retained going forward, but it cannot retrieve historical copies or eliminate privacy risks arising from the past incident.
The settlement FAQ says customers retain the ability to delete their account and data in perpetuity. That ongoing deletion right is separate from the question of what happened to information involved in the 2023 breach.
Are there other 23andMe settlements?
Yes. The U.S. customer settlement should not be combined with other proceedings:
- U.S. customer class settlement: Approximately $46.75 million, involving the U.S. settlement class described above.
- Canadian settlement: A separate settlement of approximately $3.25 million.
- Multistate agreement: A separate reported $18 million agreement involving 42 states, along with restrictions concerning direct-to-consumer activity and personal-information handling.
These matters involve different claimant groups, jurisdictions and legal proceedings. None should be presented as one global $67 million settlement.
For the current U.S. settlement status, deadlines and payment information, use the authorized settlement website and its FAQ.
