The federal ACA Marketplace’s 2027 Open Enrollment runs November 1 through December 15, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027. The federal Marketplace lists January 15, 2027, as the end of its general enrollment period, but that later date does not change the December 15 deadline for January 1 coverage. State-based Marketplaces may set different dates within federal limits, so check your state’s Exchange. The title’s “horrifying for everyone” is an opinion, not an established fact; the practical concern is a shorter federal enrollment window and the need to check your own deadline, plan choices and costs.
Which enrollment period applies to you?
“Open Enrollment” can mean different things depending on your coverage. The ACA Marketplace and Medicare have separate windows and rules. Start by identifying which system applies before acting on a deadline.
- ACA Marketplace: This is the enrollment period for individual and family health plans sold through HealthCare.gov or a state-based Exchange. The dates below concern 2027 Marketplace coverage.
- Medicare: Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 through December 7. Eligible beneficiaries can use it to change Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plans, or switch between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare. See Medicare.gov for information about Medicare options.
Marketplace and Medicare coverage are not interchangeable. If you are unsure which applies, confirm your eligibility and coverage situation before choosing a plan.
When can you enroll in an ACA Marketplace plan for 2027?
HealthCare.gov says people can apply for 2027 coverage starting November 1, 2026. On the federal Marketplace, enroll by December 15, 2026, for a plan that starts January 1, 2027. HealthCare.gov’s general dates page lists January 15, 2027, as the end of Open Enrollment, but enrolling after December 15 means you miss the listed deadline for January 1 coverage. Check the Marketplace’s current instructions for the effective date that applies to an enrollment made later in the period. HealthCare.gov’s dates and deadlines.

These federal dates are not universal. Under the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ final rule for plan year 2027, each Exchange must set an annual enrollment period that starts no later than November 1, ends no later than December 31, and lasts no more than nine calendar weeks. The federal Exchange is using November 1 through December 15; state-based Exchanges can choose dates within those parameters. Confirm your state’s deadline directly with its Exchange. CMS’s final rule summary.
Why is the federal window shorter?
For plan year 2027, CMS is limiting the annual enrollment period to no more than nine calendar weeks and requiring it to end by December 31. The federal Marketplace’s November 1–December 15 schedule is shorter than the window that continued through January 15 for 2026 coverage. That makes it important to compare plans and complete enrollment earlier if you need coverage beginning January 1.
A shorter window does not establish that the period will be “horrifying” for everyone. People face different circumstances: their available plans, eligibility for savings and deadlines depend on where they live and their household situation. The timing change is real; a universal outcome is not supported by the available figures.
What should you review before renewing?
Renewal is an active decision, not a reason to assume last year’s plan and price will still suit you. HealthCare.gov advises updating expected income and household details, then comparing available plans. Marketplace savings are based on expected income for the coverage year. - Update household information. Review the people who need coverage and report relevant household changes through the Marketplace.
- Estimate income for 2027. Use your expected income for the coverage year when updating your application; it can affect eligibility for Marketplace savings.
- Compare the plans available in your area. Look beyond the monthly premium after any tax credit. Compare deductibles and other out-of-pocket costs, covered services and prescriptions, and whether your providers are in the plan’s network.
- Check the enrollment deadline and effective date. Use HealthCare.gov for federal Marketplace enrollment or your state Exchange’s instructions for state-based coverage.
