A 2020 Toyota Sequoia may be the smarter buy if you find a well-maintained example for substantially less than a comparable 2025 and want its 5.7-liter V8. The 2025 is the stronger fit if you need more towing capacity or want its hybrid powertrain and newer technology. There is no universal winner: the decision depends on the price and condition of the specific vehicles, your needs, and the costs you expect to own them.
What changed between the 2020 and 2025 Sequoia?
These are different generations with different powertrains. Toyota’s 2020 model-year materials specify a 5.7-liter V8 and six-speed automatic; for 2025, Toyota specifies a standard twin-turbo V6 hybrid and 10-speed automatic. The 2025 has higher published power and torque, while the 2020 offers the older V8 configuration.

These are U.S.-market manufacturer specifications and estimates, not independent test results. Toyota published the 2020 output and towing figures in its 2020 model-year overview and TRD Pro release. The 2025 figures come from Toyota’s 2025 announcement and 2025 brochure.
Is the 2020 Sequoia better than the 2025?
Not for every buyer. The 2025 is better suited to shoppers who value the higher published towing maximum, more power and torque, and newer cabin and convenience features. Toyota describes 2025 features such as updated multimedia, an adjustable cargo shelf, a sliding third row, power-folding third-row seating, and trailer-camera technology on specified grades or with particular equipment. Toyota also added a 1794 grade for 2025.

The 2020 remains a plausible value choice for someone who specifically wants a V8 and can buy a sound example at a price that compensates for its age and older equipment. It is not devoid of driver assistance: Toyota says Safety Sense-P, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert were standard across 2020 grades. For 2025, Toyota says Safety Sense 2.5 is standard. These feature descriptions do not establish which vehicle has better crash-test results.
Cabin fit is personal. Toyota described the 2020 as a three-row SUV with adult-size third-row room, while the 2025’s seating and cargo arrangements include different configurations and features. Sit in both rows, try child-seat access, and test cargo arrangements before deciding.

How much can a 2020 Sequoia tow compared with a 2025?
Toyota’s published maximum is higher for the 2025: up to 9,520 lb, compared with up to 7,400 lb for the 2020 lineup depending on grade and equipment. The 2020 TRD Pro figure in Toyota’s release is up to 7,100 lb. Those are lineup or grade-specific maximums, not a promise that every vehicle can tow that amount.
Before towing, check the owner’s manual and vehicle labels for the exact vehicle’s limits, including tow rating and payload. Confirm that the hitch, wiring, and any required brake-control equipment are present, and account for the loaded trailer’s weight. A maximum tow rating alone does not establish that a particular loaded vehicle and trailer combination is within its limits.

Does the 2025 Sequoia get better gas mileage?
Toyota’s 2025 brochure gives estimated fuel economy by configuration: 21 city / 24 highway / 22 combined mpg for 4×2 SR5 and Limited, and 19 / 22 / 20 mpg for 4×4 configurations. Those figures should not be treated as one rating for every 2025 trim. The cited Toyota passages do not provide a comparable 2020 EPA rating, so a numeric year-to-year fuel-economy verdict cannot be made from those specifications alone.
Look up the exact year, engine, and drivetrain at fueleconomy.gov, then estimate fuel costs using your annual mileage and local fuel prices. The EPA says the original fuel-economy estimate remains the best indicator of a used vehicle’s average mileage when it has been properly maintained; see its fuel-economy label guidance. Do not assume the 2025 hybrid will save a particular amount without a like-for-like comparison and assumptions about mileage, fuel prices, and use.

Is the older Sequoia more reliable?
The available manufacturer feature and specification materials do not establish that the 2020 or 2025 is more reliable. A model-year comparison cannot substitute for evidence about an individual used vehicle’s maintenance, repairs, and condition. For a 2020, obtain service and repair records, check recall status by VIN, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. The same vehicle-specific checks are useful when evaluating any example.

Compare vehicles with similar grades, drivetrains, seating layouts, towing equipment, and options. Then weigh the purchase-price difference against the likely ownership costs and the features you would give up. A lower asking price is not necessarily a better deal if inspection findings, immediate maintenance, or financing and insurance costs narrow the difference. Conversely, paying more for a 2025 may be justified if its towing headroom or newer features matter to you.

How to compare two actual Sequoias before buying
- Match the vehicles. Compare grade, 2WD or 4WD, second-row bench or captain’s chairs, towing equipment, and installed options rather than relying on model year alone.

- Try the cabin and check fit. Test the second and third rows, child-seat access, cargo shelf positions where applicable, and whether the SUV fits your parking space or garage.
- Compare the full cost of ownership. Include the purchase price, likely immediate maintenance, financing and insurance costs if relevant, and the value you place on newer features or greater towing capacity.
