For domestic Chinese wholesale sourcing, 1688 is usually the better starting point; for retail purchases, product discovery, or a small test order, Taobao is usually the closer fit. Neither platform is automatically the best choice for an overseas buyer. Compare the actual seller, order terms, payment route, China-side receiving and inspection, export arrangements, and total landed cost before paying.
What each platform is designed to do
Alibaba Group classifies Taobao within its China Commerce retail businesses and 1688 as its domestic wholesale marketplace. That distinction is useful for choosing where to start, but it does not establish the role or reliability of any individual seller. 1688: domestic wholesale sourcing
1688 is oriented toward wholesale buyers and sellers in China. It can be a useful place to compare domestic supply for repeat inventory, but a listing does not prove that its seller is a factory. Manufacturers, wholesalers, and resellers may appear side by side, so verify who you are dealing with and what the seller can supply.
Taobao: retail buying and product discovery
Taobao is a retail marketplace, making it a more natural fit for buying individual items, exploring products, or considering a small test order. Some sellers may accommodate small quantities, but do not assume a listing is intended for wholesale or that its seller will offer repeat-order terms.

Choose by the job you need done
- Buying one item or exploring retail products: Start with Taobao, then confirm the seller, exact listing, payment options, and shipping terms for your destination.
- Comparing domestic wholesale supply or sourcing repeat inventory: Start with 1688 if you can manage the domestic-market language, payment, receiving, and export steps yourself or through a service provider.
- Reducing friction on an initial overseas order: Alibaba.com is a separate, export-oriented procurement option described in the current comparison guide. - Using more than one platform: One possible workflow is to explore or test a product on Taobao, validate potential suppliers, and compare domestic supply on 1688. Treat that as an option, not a required sequence.
Compare the transaction, not just the platform
Wholesale and retail labels describe a marketplace’s general purpose, not the terms of a particular order. Compare equivalent products and services across the following points. - Seller identity: Ask whether the seller is a manufacturer, wholesaler, or reseller. Do not infer seller type from the listing alone.
- Quantity and price tiers: Confirm the minimum order quantity, quantity breaks, sample availability and terms, and whether the product is in stock or made to order. These vary by listing and seller; there is no platform-wide minimum order quantity established here.
- Product equivalence: Match the specification, variant, material, packaging, lead time, and sample terms before comparing prices. Listings that look similar may not describe the same product or service.
- Language and communication: Domestic listings and seller conversations may require Mandarin or assistance. Check the interface and communication options available for your account, and make sure someone can confirm specifications and order changes accurately.
- Payment and order terms: Verify which payment route is eligible for your account and the specific order, along with the seller’s terms. A payment provider’s description of its own service does not establish that the route will work for every buyer or listing. - China-side receiving and export: Identify who receives the domestic shipment, what checks they perform, and who consolidates goods, prepares export packing and documents, arranges international freight, and handles customs requirements.
Calculate landed cost before deciding
A lower displayed price on 1688 is not automatically a lower-cost purchase. A domestic listing and an export-oriented quote may include different services. For a domestic-market order, you may need to arrange Mandarin negotiation and specification checks, domestic payment, delivery to a China address, receiving and inspection, consolidation, export packing and documents, international freight, and applicable customs costs separately.

Build the comparison from equivalent terms. Add the product cost and every payment, receiving, inspection, handling, freight, and customs expense through delivery to your destination. Compare offers with similar inspection scope, packaging, shipping, and support. A displayed unit price alone does not establish a saving; the cost difference depends on the product, order volume, and shipping route.
Before you pay: a sourcing checklist
- Confirm the seller’s identity and whether it is a manufacturer, wholesaler, or reseller.
- Agree on the exact product specification and variant, quantity tier, stock or made-to-order status, packaging, sample terms, and lead time.
- Verify that your payment route is available for your buyer account and this order.
- Set the China delivery address and confirm who will receive the shipment.
- Agree on the inspection scope and the evidence you will receive before the goods leave China.
- Assign responsibility for consolidation, export, documents, freight, and customs.
- Calculate total landed cost and compare offers on equivalent terms rather than choosing by displayed price.
These checks are especially useful when a domestic listing requires services beyond placing the order. A sourcing agent, inspection provider, receiving and consolidation service, freight forwarder, or cross-border payment service may cover some of those tasks. Before relying on one, compare its scope and fees, the inspection evidence it provides, and who is responsible for export.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can foreign buyers use 1688 directly?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the buyer’s account, eligible payment route, seller and order terms, and ability to arrange delivery and any export steps. Confirm those details for the specific purchase before relying on direct checkout.
Is Taobao usable for wholesale?
Taobao is primarily a retail marketplace, not a wholesale equivalent to 1688. A seller may discuss larger quantities, but confirm the quantity, price breaks, samples, and repeat-order terms directly rather than assuming a retail listing offers wholesale terms.

Why is the same product cheaper on 1688 than on Alibaba?
A lower displayed price may reflect a domestic-market listing that does not include the same payment support, receiving, inspection, export preparation, freight, or other services as an export-oriented quote. Compare the same specification and quantity, then calculate all costs through delivery to your destination.
Do I have to choose just one?
No. You can use Taobao for retail discovery or a small test and 1688 to compare domestic wholesale supply, if that workflow suits the product and you can verify the sellers and arrange the required logistics.
