How to compare budget hotel chains fairly
A low advertised nightly rate does not necessarily mean a low-cost stay. Prices change by destination, dates, demand, room type, occupancy, booking channel and fees. A consumer comparison from CNBC Select describes sampling brand-site rates for a one-week July 2026 trip, but those examples do not establish a price that applies to other trips. For each hotel you are considering, compare the total payable amount for identical dates, room occupancy and cancellation terms. Check whether taxes and mandatory fees appear in the displayed total, and whether the rate is refundable. Then account for costs that can change the value of the stay:
- Location: A hotel farther from your destination may add transport, toll or parking expenses.
- Included amenities: Breakfast, Wi-Fi, a kitchen and laundry can reduce out-of-pocket spending, but availability may differ by property.
- Pets and parking: Ask about charges and limits at the specific hotel; do not assume a chain-wide policy applies everywhere.
- Length of stay: A room suited to one night may be less economical than a kitchen-equipped extended-stay room for a week or month.

Which amenities can make a low rate cheaper overall?

Econo Lodge’s press kit lists free continental breakfast and Wi-Fi. Hilton says Spark includes free breakfast at North American hotels and free Wi-Fi. IHG notes that breakfast is often included by certain brands but varies by brand and property. Confirm both the amenity and its hours with the hotel; an advertised feature may not be available on every rate or at every location. Choice describes WoodSpring Suites as an extended-stay option with in-room kitchens and laundry. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes Suburban Studios as economy extended stay, with in-room kitchens, Wi-Fi, laundry and bi-weekly housekeeping. IHG identifies Candlewood Suites as a dedicated extended-stay brand. A kitchen may help reduce meal costs and laundry access may reduce laundromat expenses, but calculate those savings against the room price and check for equipment, service or usage charges before relying on them. Pets, parking and cancellation
Red Roof states that its policy allows the first pet without an additional charge; that does not establish that every property accepts every animal or that other pet-related conditions do not apply. IHG says pet policies vary by location. Parking and cancellation rules are also reasons to check the individual hotel’s booking terms before paying.

What awards and satisfaction rankings do—and do not—tell you
Red Roof’s June 24, 2026 announcement attributes its Best Budget-Friendly Hotel Brand recognition to USA Today readers, reporting that it was the fifth time and second consecutive year. That is an award claim, not evidence that Red Roof is cheapest for a particular itinerary. In the same release, Red Roof reports a portfolio of more than 715 properties and 60,000 rooms across the U.S., Canada and Japan; those figures are not U.S.-only counts. Choice says WoodSpring Suites ranked first in J.D. Power’s 2026 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study economy extended-stay segment. Choice reports that the study drew responses from 44,787 hotel guests whose stays occurred from May 2025 through May 2026; it benchmarked 104 brands across nine market segments and evaluated seven dimensions.
