No weekday or fixed booking lead time is guaranteed to be cheapest for every route.
How to find cheap flights: 15 practical strategies
1. Search a range of travel dates
If your plans allow it, compare nearby departure and return dates. Google Flights’ calendar and date-grid views make it easier to see how prices change across dates. A small shift may reveal a better option, but the lowest fare depends on the route and dates you compare. Google’s guide to finding flight deals explains these comparison tools.
2. Check nearby airports
Compare airports serving the same area when you can realistically use more than one. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) notes that fares in a metropolitan area can differ by airport. Include the cost and time of getting to and from each airport; a cheaper ticket may not mean a cheaper or more convenient journey. DOT’s fare guidance recommends flexibility in travel plans.
3. Compare the full itinerary, not the first price you see
For each option, compare the displayed ticket price, schedule, stops, and fare restrictions. In the United States, ticket prices shown to consumers must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges. Optional services may cost extra, so include them if you expect to use them. DOT’s ticket-buying guidance explains which fees must be included and where airlines must make optional-fee information available.

4. Add the baggage you will actually bring
Check the allowance and charges for your specific airline, itinerary, and fare. A base fare that excludes a checked bag may not suit a traveler who needs one. In the U.S., baggage-fee information must be accessible from an airline’s homepage and from the first screen that displays a fare quotation. Charges can differ for oversized or overweight bags; confirm the operating carrier’s rules before you buy. DOT describes baggage-fee disclosure requirements.
5. Include seat selection and other extras only if you need them
Some low fares charge separately for services that other fares include. If choosing a seat or using another optional service matters to your trip, add its price when comparing itineraries. If you do not need the service, do not count it as a saving to pay for it on another fare.
6. Read the fare conditions before paying
Discounted fares can have stricter rules for refunds, changes, baggage, or seat assignment. Check the conditions for the exact fare rather than assuming they match another ticket on the same flight. Decide whether the lower price is worth the restrictions and any fees for services you need. DOT advises travelers to review ticket restrictions and optional-service fees.

7. Match flexibility to the likelihood your plans will change
A nonrefundable ticket may not be refunded simply because you change your plans. Change and cancellation rights depend on the fare and applicable rules. Compare the ticket’s terms with how certain your dates are; paying more for flexibility may be useful if a change is plausible, but it is not automatically worth the extra cost. 8. Know what the U.S. 24-hour rule does—and does not—require
For a ticket bought at least seven days before scheduled departure, U.S. rules require an airline to offer either a 24-hour cancellation period for a full refund or a 24-hour hold at the quoted price. The airline is not required to offer both. According to DOT, this airline requirement does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies, travel agents, or other third-party agents. If you book through an intermediary, check that seller’s policy before relying on a cancellation window. DOT’s ticket guidance and refund guidance set out the rule.
9. Use fare alerts to monitor, not to predict
Price alerts can help you keep an eye on a route or dates while you decide. Treat them as a monitoring aid, not a promise that a fare will fall or that you will receive a particular saving. Continue to compare the itinerary and its terms when an alert arrives.

10. Be skeptical of “best day to book” rules
Historical airfare patterns do not establish a universal cheapest weekday or a fixed number of days in advance that works for every route. Google notes that its historical patterns may not hold for a specific trip. Compare the dates and options that fit your plans instead of waiting for a magic booking day. 11. Compare itineraries using the same requirements
Make the comparison fair: use the same baggage needs, seat expectations, and flexibility assumptions for each flight. Otherwise, one option may appear cheaper only because you have left out a service you would buy later.
12. Put time and stops on the ledger
Compare departure and arrival times, the number of stops, and the duration of each stop alongside price. A lower fare may require a longer or less convenient journey. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on your schedule and priorities.

13. Account for airport transfers
When an alternative airport looks cheaper, add the ground-transport cost and travel time for both ends of the trip. Compare the door-to-door plan, not only the airfare; this is especially important when the airports are in different parts of a metropolitan area.
14. Check who is selling the ticket
Before paying, identify whether the airline or a third-party seller is handling the booking. Booking channel can affect which policy applies, including the U.S. 24-hour airline requirement. Review the seller’s terms as well as the airline’s itinerary and fare conditions.
15. Verify the final itinerary’s rules with the airline
Before purchase, confirm baggage allowances, fees, and fare conditions for the actual itinerary and fare—especially if more than one carrier operates the journey. Rules can vary by carrier, route, fare, and booking channel. DOT’s disclosure requirements help travelers find fee information, but the applicable airline rules determine what you can bring and what services cost. Check DOT’s guidance on buying a ticket and the airline’s own current terms.

How to compare two flight options
Use the same traveler requirements for both options. This keeps the comparison focused on the price and trade-offs that matter to you.
- Total cost: Ticket price plus the baggage, seat selection, and other optional services you expect to use.
- Schedule: Departure and arrival times, number and duration of stops, and total travel time.
- Airport logistics: Airport location, transport cost, and time to reach it.
- Flexibility: Change and refund terms for the exact fare.
- Booking channel: Whether the airline or a third party is the seller, and which policy applies.
Why baggage deserves a separate check
Baggage fees are not a minor detail for every traveler: DOT reported that U.S. airline baggage-fee revenue grew by more than 30% between 2018 and 2022, citing Bureau of Transportation Statistics data. That is a historical, industry-wide comparison, not a prediction of what an individual will pay. The useful step is to check the applicable allowance and fee for your own ticket. If you travel with checked luggage, a portable luggage scale can help you check its weight before leaving for the airport. It does not change the airline’s allowance or guarantee that you will avoid a fee; check the carrier’s rules first. The fare-pricing and 24-hour booking protections described here are U.S. DOT guidance. They should not be assumed to apply in other countries. Travelers elsewhere should check their local consumer-protection rules and the airline or booking seller’s terms. Fare and baggage specifics can also change by carrier, route, fare, and date.
