14 Woodworking Projects to Make and Sell—and How to Test Their Profitability

Fourteen wood-project ideas can give a maker a starting point, but none guarantees profit. Compare skill, production time, full costs, shipping, and buyer interest before committing to inventory.

Wood signs, picture frames, shelves, boards, boxes, and other small-batch builds can make practical products to test with buyers. But a project idea is not proof of sales or profit: what you earn depends on your materials, labor, finishing, fees, packaging, shipping, and the price customers will actually pay. Start with a product you can make consistently, validate demand in your intended market, and calculate the full cost before investing in inventory.

What woodworking projects sell? Start with ideas, not assumptions

Shopify’s June 2, 2026 guide lists 14 categories of wood projects to sell. The list is useful for brainstorming, but it does not rank them by verified net profit or establish that each one will sell in your area. Woodcraft’s advice is a helpful reminder: “There is no universal product that everyone wants.” Treat every idea below as something to test against your skills, costs, and prospective buyers.

1. Wooden signs

Personalized signs with a name or saying can be made in different sizes and styles. Shopify describes signs as beginner-friendly and relatively light to ship. A test batch can help you learn which wording, finish, and dimensions buyers prefer before you offer many variations.

2. Picture frames

Frames can suit a maker comfortable with straight cuts and simple joinery. Decide whether the product is a standard size or made to order, and account for the glazing, backing, hanging hardware, and protective packaging—not just the wood.

3. Wooden art

Wall art gives you room to test shapes, patterns, and reclaimed materials. Because the design is central to the appeal, show the actual piece clearly and describe its size, materials, and hanging method.

4. Furniture

Small tables, benches, and other furniture can be statement pieces, but typically require more skill, material, shop space, and labor than small gifts. Their size also makes delivery and shipping costs important parts of the business decision.

5. Floating shelves

Shelves are practical home décor and can be designed to ship flat. Specify dimensions, load-related limitations, mounting hardware, and installation requirements so buyers can tell whether a shelf suits their space.

6. Wooden kitchen products

Kitchen products can include cutting boards, coasters, serving trays, utensils, and wine racks. Shopify notes that even basic boards and coasters call for attention to detail, while spoons and spatulas require more shaping skill. For items that contact food, choose and clearly describe an appropriate food-safe finish.

7. Charcuterie boards

Serving boards are a more specific kitchen product, with the wood selection, grain, edge treatment, and finish contributing to the finished piece. Include the cost of food-safe finishing oil and allow for the time needed to sand and finish each board consistently.

8. Wood boxes

Simple crates and boxes can be a starting point; jewelry and keepsake boxes call for more detailed joinery and finishing. Personalization or engraving is one possible differentiator, but its added setup and production time belong in the cost calculation.

9. Birdhouses

Birdhouses can be sold as garden products or gifts. Designs should be appropriate to the intended bird species; Shopify recommends consulting bird organizations for species-specific guidance rather than assuming one design suits all birds.

10. Planters

Planters range from small succulent holders to larger outdoor boxes. Consider where the item will be used, how it handles moisture, and whether its size makes it economical to ship or better suited to local pickup.

11. Repurposed and scrap wood projects

Reclaimed material can become planters, signs, shelves, trays, benches, or coffee tables. It may reduce the purchase of new lumber, but it does not make the work free: pallet disassembly can be strenuous, and safe nail removal, sanding, and cutting take time. Check the material carefully before turning it into a product.

12. Wooden toys and games

Blocks, puzzles, and games offer possible product directions, but items intended for children bring safety and regulatory considerations. Check the requirements that apply to the product and where you sell it. Shopify mentions the U.S. Children’s Product Certificate; that is not a substitute for determining which rules apply to a particular product.

13. Candle holders

Candle holders are small décor or gift items that may have seasonal appeal. Shopify reports holiday-season interest in candle-holder searches, but that does not establish sales for a particular maker or guarantee demand in a given season. Account for the product’s safe use and describe its intended candle size and placement.

14. Wooden docking stations

Desk docking stations can be designed to hold or organize devices and accessories. Fit and compatibility matter, so specify dimensions and what devices or cables the design accommodates. Shopify cites a $109 retail example for one Oakywood docking station; that is one brand’s price, not a typical market price or evidence of profit.

How to choose a first product line

Match the project to what you can make well and what buyers in your intended market want. The factors below are a practical decision framework drawn from the considerations raised by Shopify and Woodcraft, not a published scoring model.

  • Skill and tools: Can you make the item safely and consistently with your current tools, or does it require new equipment or techniques?
  • Materials and hardware: What do lumber, fasteners, fittings, finishes, and any included accessories cost per unit?
  • Labor and finishing: How much time goes into cutting, assembly, sanding, finishing, and quality checks?
  • Batchability: Can you make several pieces efficiently without sacrificing consistency?
  • Personalization: Could custom names or dimensions attract buyers, and can you handle the extra communication and production time?
  • Shipping and breakage: How large or heavy is the finished item, how must it be protected, and does shipping erase the margin?
  • Seasonality: Is interest likely to be tied to a holiday, gardening season, or another buying occasion?
  • Buyer evidence: Have you seen people in your target market respond to similar products at realistic prices?

For a newer maker, Shopify describes signs and picture frames as accessible starting points, along with simple shelves, boxes, planters, and birdhouses. That refers to construction entry points, not a promise of sales. Furniture and detailed shaping or carving tend to ask more of the maker’s skill, time, and materials in the examples it discusses.

Woodcraft suggests thinking in tiers: small impulse buys, mid-level tabletop projects, and larger statement pieces. Its examples include cutting boards, pens, bowls, signs, toys, puzzles, keepsake boxes, ornaments, planters, small tables, blanket chests, and Adirondack chairs. A range of sizes may help you observe different buyer budgets, but each item still needs its own cost and demand check.

Validate demand before making inventory

Look for evidence in the place and channel where you plan to sell. Woodcraft recommends visiting craft shows, farmers’ markets, and festivals before production, noting busy booths and prices, and making products that suit the local market. Shopify also recommends making a test project and using customer feedback to adjust the design and production choices.

  1. Choose a specific buyer and use. For example, decide whether you are testing a small personalized house sign for local gift buyers or a set of coasters for market shoppers.
  2. Study comparable products. Note their dimensions, materials, finish, presentation, and listed prices. A similar listing is a reference point, not proof that it sells.
  3. Make a small test quantity. Keep the design and options manageable so you can measure time and costs rather than tying up money in many variants.
  4. Show the products where those buyers shop. Use a local market, craft show, or relevant online channel. Ask for specific feedback on size, finish, function, and price.
  5. Record actual outcomes. Track inquiries, orders, production time, packaging, fees, and shipping. Use what happens—not a search trend or an idea list—to decide whether to refine, continue, or drop the product.

Etsy’s Seller Handbook includes historical UK search comparisons: searches on Etsy for planters rose 458%, outdoor tables 1,445%, and patio furniture 2,644% in January–March 2021 compared with January–March 2020. These are platform-specific figures for the UK and that comparison period; they do not establish current demand in 2026 or demand elsewhere.

How to price woodworking projects without mistaking sales for profit

Neither Shopify’s project guide nor Woodcraft’s guide establishes a universal profit margin or income level for these categories. A low material cost does not by itself make a product profitable, and a popular item may leave little after delivery costs. Woodcraft advises accounting for time, materials, and market rates; Shopify cautions that shipping can make a bestseller less profitable.

For each product, calculate a fully loaded cost that includes:

  • Wood and other materials, including expected waste
  • Hardware, glue, and accessories
  • Finishing supplies and the labor to apply them
  • Your production and finishing time
  • Packaging and protective materials
  • Marketplace or payment costs that apply to your chosen channel
  • Shipping costs you pay or absorb

Then compare your proposed price with alternatives buyers can realistically choose, test price points in small quantities, and update the calculation after real orders and shipping expenses. A price that covers materials but not labor or selling costs is not a useful measure of profit.

Where can you sell woodworking projects?

Woodcraft names craft shows and local markets for meeting buyers and testing price points, as well as Etsy, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace as online options. Shopify describes a standalone ecommerce store as offering more control over pricing and customer experience, while noting that attracting traffic can be challenging and marketplaces have trade-offs. Choose the channel based on where your likely buyers are and what selling work you can manage.

If you sell on Etsy

Etsy’s policy says items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller. For items listed as “made by a seller,” physical goods must be made by hand or produced with computerized tools, and listings must use the seller’s own photographs. Reselling mass-produced goods as handmade is not allowed. These are Etsy’s rules, not a universal policy for every marketplace.

Etsy’s garden-goods guidance recommends clear photos, descriptive multi-word titles and tags, complete dimensions and care details, and accurate processing times. These details help set buyer expectations, especially for made-to-order projects.

If you use a standalone store or local market

A standalone store gives you more control over how your work is presented and priced, but you are responsible for bringing prospective customers to it. In-person markets let you meet buyers and observe reactions directly. Whichever route you choose, be clear about materials, dimensions, care, turnaround time, and delivery or pickup arrangements.

A practical first-product plan

  1. Pick one product you can make reliably with your present skills and equipment.
  2. Build a sample and document the materials, hardware, production time, and finish.
  3. Check comparable products and speak with prospective buyers in the market you intend to serve.
  4. Calculate the complete per-item cost, including labor, packaging, selling costs, and shipping.
  5. Offer a small test batch, gather feedback and record real costs and orders.
  6. Change the design, price, channel, or product line only after reviewing those results.
