The right choice depends on whether you walk in low-cut sneakers, walking shoes, trail shoes or boots—and on how much warmth, cushioning and coverage you want. Current hiking-sock guides offer useful candidates for long walks, but they do not establish that this publication tested 13 walking socks. This guide therefore makes researched recommendations, not a “tested” ranking.
How to choose a walking sock
Start with the shoe and the conditions, then choose the sock’s height, cushioning and material. A thick sock can feel supportive in a roomy boot but make a close-fitting sneaker feel cramped. For longer walks, fit matters: avoid pressure points and bunching, and choose a thickness that works with the shoe you will actually wear.
Match height to footwear
No-show socks suit low-cut shoes when you want minimal coverage. Ankle or quarter socks cover the ankle bone; crew socks extend above it. That extra coverage can help shield skin from boot abrasion and trail debris. Choose a cuff that sits above the shoe’s contact point rather than rubbing against it. These height distinctions and protection considerations are described in REI’s hiking-sock guide.
Choose cushioning for warmth and shoe fit
Light or no cushioning is generally more breathable. Medium cushioning balances padding and warmth for many hikes and longer walks. Heavy cushioning adds warmth and padding, but can be too warm in hot weather. Those are trade-offs, not guarantees: the right choice also depends on your shoe’s available space and your own comfort. REI explains the cushioning categories in its sock-selection advice.

Read the fiber blend on the exact model
Merino wool and synthetic fibers are often blended, but the proportions vary by model. For example, Good Housekeeping lists its Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew Midweight as 66% merino wool, 32% nylon and 2% spandex; CleverHiker lists its Darn Tough Light Hiker Micro Crew as 43% merino, 54% nylon and 3% Lycra. Those figures apply to the specific models reported, not every sock from the brand. Check the current product label before buying. See the Good Housekeeping picks and CleverHiker picks.

The products below are candidates identified in current hiking-sock guides. Their use cases can translate to walking, but the cited guides do not test them as a unified set of 13 walking socks. | Pick | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew Midweight Hiking Socks | Roomier walking shoes or boots; a medium-cushion option | Good Housekeeping named it a best-overall pick and lists a 66% merino wool, 32% nylon and 2% spandex blend for this model. Check thickness against shoe fit. Good Housekeeping |
| Darn Tough Light Hiker Micro Crew | Walkers who want a lighter-cushion crew sock | CleverHiker named it a best-overall hiking pick and lists 43% merino, 54% nylon and 3% Lycra. Its composition differs from the midweight model above. CleverHiker |
| Smartwool Performance Hike Light Cushion Crew | Warm-weather walking in shoes with room for a crew sock | Identified as a light-cushion, warm-weather option in current guides; check the exact model and current fiber label. Good Housekeeping and REI |
| REI Co-op Merino Wool Lightweight Hiking Crew | A lightweight merino crew candidate | Current guides identify it as a value-oriented option. Confirm current listing, model details and fit before comparing prices. REI and CleverHiker |
| Balega Hidden Comfort | Low-cut sneakers when you prefer a no-show sock | A no-show candidate in CleverHiker’s guide. Its shorter coverage is less suited to footwear that rubs above the sock line. CleverHiker |
| Injinji Trail Midweight Crew | People looking specifically for separated toes where toes rub together | Toe-separated construction addresses a different fit concern than a conventional crew sock. Kit Authority identifies it for toe-blister concerns, but explicitly says its guide is researched rather than hands-on tested. Kit Authority |
| Danish Endurance Merino Wool Light Hiking Socks, 3-Pack | Walkers considering a lightweight multipack | Good Housekeeping identifies it as a value multipack candidate. Verify the current listing and fiber details rather than assuming the model or blend has stayed unchanged. Good Housekeeping |
| WRIGHTSOCK Coolmesh II Crew | Hot-weather walks or trail use where a crew height works | REI lists it among crew picks and identifies it for hot-weather hiking or trail running. Make sure the height and fit suit your shoes. REI |
Which sock works for summer walks in sneakers?
For low-cut sneakers in warm weather, begin with a no-show or low-profile sock if you do not need extra ankle coverage. Balega Hidden Comfort is one such candidate in CleverHiker’s guide. If you prefer a crew sock or need more coverage, consider a lighter-cushion option such as Smartwool Performance Hike Light Cushion Crew, provided it does not make the shoe feel tight. REI describes light cushioning as more breathable than heavier cushioning; that does not mean any particular fiber blend will feel cool for every wearer.
Material alone does not settle the choice. Check the exact sock’s composition, thickness and fit, then try it with the shoes you plan to wear. A sock that bunches or crowds the toe box can undermine an otherwise comfortable pairing.

- CUSHIONED ALL-DAY COMFORT: A cushioned foot delivers comfort and durability through the everyday athletic rotation — gym workouts, weight room sessions, running, daily walks, weekend tennis and full-day casual wear — delivering a no-slip fit. Built for active men who put in the miles.
- ARCH COMPRESSION + REINFORCED HEEL/TOE: Arch compression secures the foot and offers extra support through long days on your feet — so the sock stays put on foot. Reinforced heel and toe construction holds up to regular wear and wash through repeated training and casual rotation.
- LOW CUT CLEAN PROFILE: The low cut silhouette sits at the ankle line for a clean profile under low-cut sneakers, athletic trainers and casual kicks — a foundational athletic sock pack for the gym, the daily commute and casual everyday wear.
- FEEL COOL AND DRY WITH CLIMACOOL: adidas Climacool wicks sweat away to keep feet cool and dry through gym workouts, weight room sessions, runs and full-day casual wear — moisture management built for the everyday athletic rotation.
- SIZING — AVAILABLE IN M, L AND XL: Three sizes covering Men's shoe 5 through 15. Six pairs cover a full week of training and casual wear. Stretch poly-spandex blend. Machine washable; tumble dry low. Pairs with running shoes, training sneakers, court shoes and casual sneakers.
Do toe socks help with rubbing between toes?
Toe-separated socks place fabric between toes, so they are a construction to consider when the specific problem is between-toe rubbing. Injinji Trail Midweight Crew is a candidate named by Kit Authority for toe-blister concerns. That guide describes its recommendations as researched rather than hands-on tested, so it does not establish that the sock prevents blisters. A conventional crew sock does not separate the toes.

Testing claims belong to the publications that performed the work and should not be transferred to this guide. Good Housekeeping says its Textiles Lab evaluated more than 100 sock styles, including 20 hiking socks, for fabric composition, durability and comfort, with consumer testers wearing socks on hikes. The publication also describes more than 120 years of independent product research and testing; that is its history claim, not a measure of sock performance. GearJunkie says its team has tested 40 hiking socks since 2022 and retested the socks in its guide over 12 months across varied outings and weather. These are GearJunkie’s stated program figures, not a universal test standard or results from this article. GearJunkie’s guide. Other current guides also describe their own evaluations, but their findings remain specific to their authors and methods.
A meaningful “tested” ranking of 13 walking socks would need to identify the exact models, footwear, wear conditions, fit checks, laundering, test duration and scoring criteria. Without those records, a numbered winner list would imply evidence that is not established here.
