That figure describes Policybazaar customers—not all health-insurance customers in India. Mint also reported an average annual premium or installment ticket size of ₹17,500 for the group.
Paying by installment spreads the cash outflow over time; it does not automatically reduce the total premium. Whether you can use this payment method, what it costs, and what happens if you miss a payment depend on the specific policy.

What the 13% figure does—and does not—show
Mint reported that Policybazaar said about 13% of its health-insurance customers use monthly or quarterly installments. It also reported an average annual premium or installment ticket size of ₹17,500 for those customers. These are company-specific figures, not a market-wide estimate or evidence that 13% of Indian health-insurance customers pay this way. Mint’s October 10, 2026 report attributes the figures to Policybazaar.

How health-insurance installments work
Instead of paying a premium in one lump sum, a policyholder pays on a schedule, such as monthly or quarterly. The policy documents set out the available frequency, amounts and due dates. A payment frequency may not be offered for every product, and selecting installments does not itself mean the policy is cheaper.
For illustration only, a three-year policy with an annual premium of ₹12,000 would cost ₹36,000 over three years. If an insurer allowed 36 equal monthly payments with no additional charges, that would work out to ₹1,000 a month. This is arithmetic, not an actual insurer offer or a universal way to calculate installment premiums; use the quoted schedule and total payable for the policy you are considering.

Does paying by EMI make insurance cheaper?
Not necessarily. Installments change when you pay, but do not guarantee a lower total cost. Compare the full amount due over the policy term, including any frequency-related charges, rather than looking only at the size of each payment. Also check whether the policy offers a no-claim discount when premiums are paid by installments: Mint reports that some insurers do not offer such discounts on EMI policies, and eligibility can vary.

- Available frequency and total payable: Confirm whether the specific policy offers monthly, quarterly or another schedule, and add up all payments across the term, including any applicable charges.
- Due dates and grace period: Mint reports a 15-day grace period for monthly mode and 30 days for quarterly, half-yearly or annual installments. Treat these as reported terms, not a guarantee for every policy; verify the period and how it is calculated in your contract.
- Missed-payment consequences: Check what happens if an installment is late or unpaid, including any effect on the policy or cover. Do not assume a grace period removes every consequence.
- Claim-time payment obligations: Mint reports that some installment-based policies may require remaining installments to be paid when a claim is made. It also describes reported cases in which claims were rejected when unpaid installments exceeded an estimated or approved claim amount. This is not a universal rule; check the policy’s claim and continuation provisions.
- No-claim discount: Verify whether installment payment affects eligibility for any discount and how the insurer calculates it.
What the regulatory context says
A 2019 Indian Express report described an IRDAI allowance for general and standalone health insurers to offer monthly, quarterly or half-yearly premium frequencies. It quoted the regulator as saying that premium amounts for a new frequency should remain consistent with the underlying product’s other payment modes, and that factors used to change frequency should be fair and reasonable. This is historical regulatory context, not confirmation that every current product offers every frequency. Check the terms of the policy available to you. The Indian Express report summarizes the 2019 announcement.

Installments may help if paying the full premium at once is difficult to fit into your budget. Before opting in, compare the total cost and payment conditions with a lump-sum option for the same policy. The schedule is a cash-flow choice; the policy’s cover, exclusions and claim terms still need to meet your needs.
